152 occurs in __bases__, it must occur before any non-type bases, e.g.
153 before regular classes. 2) If you assign to __bases__, you may not
154 change the metaclass. Many more illegal assignments to __bases__
155 are now checked and raise TypeErrors. This changed fixed at least

187 and TestSuite subclasses (not instances) are no longer accepted in
188 TestSuite.addTest(). This should cause no incompatibility since it
189 never made sense with ordinary subclasses -- the failure just occurred
190 later, with a more cumbersome exception.
191
Georg Brandld0a96252007-03-07 09:21:06 +0000192- Patch #787789: allow to pass custom TestRunner instances to unittest's

669Core and builtins
670-----------------
671
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000672- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000673 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
674 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000675
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000676 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
677 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
678 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
679 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
680 exception, logged, etc.
681
682 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
683 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000684
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000685- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
686
687- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
688 with new-style classes.
689
690- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
691 classic classes.
692
693- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
694 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
695 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
696 to effectively use __index__.
697
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000698- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
699 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
700
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000701- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

704 sys.stdin is closed.
705
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000706- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
707 the Python dll again.
708
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000709- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
710 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
711 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
712 will be regenerated.
713
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000714- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
715 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
716 immediately popped off the stack.
717
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000718- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

723
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000724- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
725 generated for generator expressions.
726
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000727- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
728 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
729 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
730 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
731
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000732- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000733 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
734 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000735 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000736
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000737- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises

739
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000740- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000741 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000742 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
743 duplicate UUIDs.
744
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000745- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
746 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
747
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000748- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.

772
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000773- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The

775
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000776- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
777 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
778 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
779
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000780- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.

837
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000838- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
839
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000840- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
841 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().

846
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000847- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
848 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
849 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
850 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
851
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000852- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
853 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
854 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
855 the code to make that compiler happy again.

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000873 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.

Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000890- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
891 KeyboardInterrupt.
892
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000893- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

895
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000896- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
897 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
898
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000899- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000900 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000901 #1513611, and probably others.
902
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000903- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
904 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
905
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000906- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
907 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
908 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
909 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
910 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
911
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000912- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

922
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000923- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
924
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000925- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
926 value in the traceback module.
927

929
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000930- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
931
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000932- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
933 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
934 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
935 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
936 tuple pre-2.4.
937
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000938- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
939
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000940- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
941 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
942 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
943 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
944 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
945 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
946 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
947 charset and language parts).
948
949 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
950 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
951
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000952- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
953
954- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
955 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
956
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000957- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
958 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
959 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
960 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

967 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
968 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
969
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000970- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

972
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000973- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
974 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
975
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000976- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000981- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
982 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
983 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
984
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000985- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000986 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000987 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
988
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000989- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
990 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000991
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000992- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
993 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.

996 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
997 sleepycat API allows.
998
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000999- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

1005- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1006 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1007 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1008
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001009- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1010 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1011 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1022 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1023
1024- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1025 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001026 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1040
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001041- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1042 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1043
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001044- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1045 be released.
1046
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001047- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1048 and atof().
1049
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001050- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1051 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1052 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001053
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001054- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1055
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001056- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1057 now ints rather than longs.
1058
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001059- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1060 started after line 256.
1061
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001062- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1063 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1064 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1065 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1066 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1067 an extension.

1076
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001077- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001078 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1079 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1084
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001085- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1086 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1087 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1088
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001089- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1105 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1106
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001107- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1108 attribute values.

1111 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1112
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001113- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1114
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001115- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1116 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1117 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1118
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001119- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1125 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1126
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001127- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1128 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1129 now.
1130
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001131Extension Modules
1132-----------------
1133
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001134- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1135 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1136 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001137
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001138- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1139 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1140
1141- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1142 on non-Windows platforms.
1143
1144- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1145 integer or long, without range checking.
1146
1147- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1148 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1149 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1150
1151- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1152 with the --without-threads option.
1153
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001154- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1169
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001170- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001171 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1172 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1173
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001174- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1206-----------------
1207
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001208- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1209 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1210 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1211
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001212- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1213 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1214
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001215- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1216
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001217- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001218 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001219
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001220- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1221 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1222 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1223 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1224 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1225
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001226- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1227 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1228
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001229- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1230 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1231 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1232 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1233 requested.
1234
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001235- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1236 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1237
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001238- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1239 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1240 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1241
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001242- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1243 Unicode 4.1.
1244
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001245- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1246 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1247 fewer open calls on startup.
1248
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001249- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1250 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1251 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1252 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1253 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1254
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001255- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1256 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1257 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1258 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1259
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001260- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1261
1262- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1263 "base" parameter.
1264
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001265- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1266 objects.
1267
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001268- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1269 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1270 C library function.
1271
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001272- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1273
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001274- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1275
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001276- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1277 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1278 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1279 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1280
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001281- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1282
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001283- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1284
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001285- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1286 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1287 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1288 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1289
1290- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1291 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1292 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1293 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1299
1300- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1301
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001302- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1303 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1304
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001305- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1306
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001307- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1308 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1309 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1310 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1311
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001312- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1318
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001319- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1321
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001322- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1323 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1324
1325- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1326 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1327
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001328- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1329 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1330 Windows platforms).
1331
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001332- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1333 may deadlock.
1334
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001335- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1336 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1337
1338- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1339 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1347
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001348- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1349 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1350 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1351
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001352- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1353 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1354 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1355
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001356- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1389 double-byte encodings.
1390
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001391- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1392 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1393 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1394 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1395 of the matching pair.
1396
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001397- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1406
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001407- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1408 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1409 function when writing wrapper functions.
1410

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001414- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1415 for lookup.
1416
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001417- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1418 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1419 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1420 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1421 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1422
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001423- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1441 tarfiles.
1442
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001443- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1494=================================
1495
1496*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1497
1498Core and builtins
1499-----------------
1500
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001501- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1502 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1503
1504 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1505 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1506 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1507 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1508 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1509
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001510- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1511
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001512- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1513 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1514 multiple times.
1515
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001516- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1517 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1518 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1519
1520- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1521 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1522
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001523- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1524 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1525 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001526 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001527 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001528
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001529 def __hash__(self):
1530 return id(self) # WRONG
1531
1532 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1533 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001534 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001535 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1536 necessarily so.
1537
1538- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001539 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001540 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001541 #1454844)
1542
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001543- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1544 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1545 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1546 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1547 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001548
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001549Extension Modules

1553 is a macro.
1554
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001555- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1556 fails with an error condition.
1557
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001558- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1559
1560- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1561 the cachesize parameter.
1562
1563- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1564 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1565
1566- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1567 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001568
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001569- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1570 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.
1571
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001572Library
1573-------
1574
Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +00001575- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
1576 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1577 abusing errno.
1578
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001579- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1580 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1581 or exception is ignored).
1582
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001583- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1584 caught inside exit handlers.
1585
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001586- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1587 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1588 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1589 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1590
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001591- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1592 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1593
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001594- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1595 .zip or .egg files.
1596
1597- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1598 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1599 in the filesystem or zip files.
1600
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001601- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1602 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1603 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1604 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001605

Anthony Baxtere29002c2006-04-12 12:07:31 +00001615- SimpleXMLRPCServer relied on the fcntl module, which is unavailable on
1616 Windows. Bug #1469163.
1617
Phillip J. Eby47032112006-04-11 01:07:43 +00001618- The warnings, linecache, inspect, traceback, site, and doctest modules
1619 were updated to work correctly with modules imported from zipfiles or
1620 via other PEP 302 __loader__ objects.
1621
Martin v. Löwis17de8ff2006-04-10 15:55:37 +00001622- Patch #1467770: Reduce usage of subprocess._active to processes which

Andrew M. Kuchlingdb4018f2006-04-14 14:54:18 +00001644 specified. (Can be overridden by explicitly setting LINKCC.) Decouple
Martin v. Löwis0f48d982006-04-14 14:34:26 +00001645 CXX from --with-cxx-main, see description in README.
1646
Martin v. Löwis10acfd02006-04-10 12:39:36 +00001647- Patch #1429775: Link extension modules with the shared libpython.
1648
Hye-Shik Changf4795c82006-04-26 19:20:26 +00001649- Fixed a libffi build problem on MIPS systems.

1653 and "%zu" for unsigned integers of type ``size_t``.
1654
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001655Tests
1656-----
1657
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001658- test_contextlib now checks contextlib.nested can cope with exceptions

1662
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001663- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1664 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1665 the current Decimal context.
1666
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001667- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1668 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1669 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1670 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001696Core and builtins
1697-----------------
1698
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001699- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1700 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1701
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001702- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1703 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1704 end in .PYD.
1705
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001706- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1707 sys.stdout.encoding.
1708
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001709- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1710
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001711- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1712
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001713- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1714
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001715- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1716 5.4 and later versions.
1717
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001718- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1719 now gives a SyntaxError.
1720
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001721- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1722 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1723 (closes patch #1170323).
1724
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001725- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1726 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1727 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1728 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1729 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1730 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1731 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001732 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1733 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001734 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1735 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1736
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001737- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1738 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1739 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1740
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001741- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1742 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1743 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1744 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1745
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001746- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1747
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001748- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1749 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1750 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1751 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1752
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001753- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1754 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1755 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1756 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1757 absolute_import' is used.
1758
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001759- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1760 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1761 exceptions.
1762
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001763- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001764 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1765
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001766- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001767
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001768- Patch 1433928:
1769 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1770 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1771 KeyError.
1772
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001773- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1774 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1775 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001776 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001777 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1778 - The built-in file type.
1779 - The thread.LockType type.
1780 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1781 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1782 - The decimal.Context class.

Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001784- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1785 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1786
1787 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1788 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1789
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001790- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1791
1792- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1793 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1794 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1795 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1796 to 4-byte allocations before.

1799 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1800 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1801

1813
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001814- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1815 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1816
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001817- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

1832
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001833- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001834 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001835 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001836
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001837- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1838 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1839 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1840 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1841 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1842
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001843- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1862
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001863- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001864 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1865 was empty.
1866
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001867- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1868 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1869
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001870- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001871 present).

1874 codes.
1875
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001876- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1877 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1878 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1879
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001880- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1881 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1882
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001883- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001884 (fixes bug #1119418).
1885
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001886- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1887
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001888- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1889 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1890
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001891- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1892 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1893 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1894
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001895- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1896
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001897- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1898 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1899
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001900- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1901 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1902 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001903 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001904 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1905 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1906 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1907 realloc.
1908
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001909- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1910 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1911
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001912- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1913 like their int counterparts.
1914
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001915- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1916 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1917 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1918 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1919 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1920
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001921- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1922 serializing floats.
1923
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001924- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1925 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1926 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1927
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001928- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1929 278.
1930
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001931- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1932 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1933 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1934 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001935 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001936 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001937 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001938
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001939- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1940 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1941 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1942 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1943
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001944- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1945 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1946 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1947 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1948 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1949
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001950- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1951 disabled caused a crash.
1952
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001953- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1954 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1955
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001956- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001957 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1958
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001959- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1960
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001961- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001962 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1963 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1964 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001965

1973
Martin v. Löwisff232d72005-03-03 09:24:38 +00001974- Bug #723201: Raise a TypeError for passing bad objects to 'L' format.
1975
Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00001976- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
1977 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
1978
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001979- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001980 an ferror() call.
1981
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001982- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in
1983 list.sort().
1984
Raymond Hettingerc34f8672005-01-02 06:17:33 +00001985- The peephole optimizer now performs simple constant folding in expressions:
1986 (2+3) --> (5).
1987
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001988- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1989
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001990- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
1991 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001992
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001993- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1994 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1995 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1996
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001997- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1998 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1999 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2000
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002001- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2002 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2003 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2004 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2005 the same thread id).

2245 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2246 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2247 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2248 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several

2343 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2344 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2524
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002525- Enhancements to the csv module:
2526
2527 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002528 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002529 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002530 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2531 reporting.
2532 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2533 dictates.
2534 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002535 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002536 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002537 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2538 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002539 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2540 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002541 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002542 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2543 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2544 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2545 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2546 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2547 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2548 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2549 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2550 without first creating a dialect class.
2551 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2552 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2553 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002554 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002555 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2556 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002557 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2558 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2559 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2560 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002561 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2562 This has been fixed.
2563
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002564- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2565 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2566 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on

Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002601- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2602 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2603 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2604
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002605- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

2616 correctly.
2617
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002618- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2619 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2620 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2621 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2622 between two lines.
2623
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002624- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2625 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2626 handlers.
2627
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002628- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002629 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2630 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2633 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2634

2639
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002640- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2641 touch the recursion limit.
2642
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002643- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2644 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002645 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2646 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2647 special classes that use unicode.

2662
Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002663- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2664 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
2665

2669 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2670
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002671- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2672 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2673
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002674- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2675 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2676 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002677 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002678
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002679- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2680 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2681 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2682
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002683- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2684
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002685- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2686 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2687
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002688- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2689 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2690 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2691 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2692 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2693 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2694 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2695 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2696
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002697- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2698 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2699 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2700 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.
2701
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002702C API
2703-----
2704
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002705- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2706 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2707 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2708 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2709 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2710 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2711 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2712 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2713 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2714 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2715
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002716- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2717
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002718- Removed PyRange_New().
2719
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002720- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2721 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2722 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2723 mappings.
