16 again, no longer the posix error code.
17
Martin v. Löwisb5bc5372006-10-27 06:16:31 +000018- Patch #1549049: Support long values in structmember, issue warnings

22 and inline unconditional jumps to returns.
23
Georg Brandl2c1375c2006-10-12 11:27:59 +000024- Bug #1545497: when given an explicit base, int() did ignore NULs
25 embedded in the string to convert.
26
Georg Brandl846f73a2006-10-08 07:11:54 +000027- Bug #1569998: break inside a try statement (outside a loop) is now
28 recognized and rejected.
29
Armin Rigo7ccbca92006-10-04 12:17:45 +000030- list.pop(x) accepts any object x following the __index__ protocol.
31
32- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
33 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
34
35- A number of places, including integer negation and absolute value,
36 were fixed to not rely on undefined behaviour of the C compiler
37 anymore.

41
Georg Brandl5d59c092006-09-30 08:43:30 +000042- Patch #1567691: super() and new.instancemethod() now don't accept
43 keyword arguments any more (previously they accepted them, but didn't
44 use them).
45
Georg Brandla10d3af2006-09-24 12:35:36 +000046- Fix a bug in the parser's future statement handling that led to "with"
47 not being recognized as a keyword after, e.g., this statement:
48 from __future__ import division, with_statement

Brett Cannon9adeab72006-09-20 18:34:28 +000056- Bug #1551432: Exceptions do not define an explicit __unicode__ method. This
57 allows calling unicode() on exceptions classes directly to succeed.
58
Georg Brandlec6c2df2006-09-11 09:38:35 +000059- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
60 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.

Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000274
275Core and builtins
276-----------------
277
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000278- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000279 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
280 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000281
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000282 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
283 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
284 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
285 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
286 exception, logged, etc.
287
288 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
289 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000290
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000291- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

295
296- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
297 classic classes.
298
299- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
300 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
301 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
302 to effectively use __index__.
303
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000304- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
305 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
306
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000307- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000315- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event

332
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000333- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

335 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
336 to be maintained manually as static string literal.

438Core and builtins
439-----------------
440
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000441- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000442 returned a long (see PEP 353).
443
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000444- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
445
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000446- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
447 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
448 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
449
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000450- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
451 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
452
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000453- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
454 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
455 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
456 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
457
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000458- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
459 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
460 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
461 the code to make that compiler happy again.
462
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000463- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

477
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000478- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000479 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000480 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000481
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000482- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000483 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000484 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
485 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.

494 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
495
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000496- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

501
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000502- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
503 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
504
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000505- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000506 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000507 #1513611, and probably others.
508
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000509- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
510 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
511
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000512- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
513 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
514 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
515 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
516 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
517
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000518- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

522
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000523- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
524 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000525
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000526- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
527 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
528
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000529- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
530
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000531- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
532 value in the traceback module.
533
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000534- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
535
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000536- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
537
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000538- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
539 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
540 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
541 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
542 tuple pre-2.4.
543
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000544- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
545
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000546- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
547 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
548 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
549 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
550 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
551 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
552 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
553 charset and language parts).
554
555 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
556 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
557
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000558- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
559
560- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
561 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
562
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000563- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
564 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
565 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
566 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

578
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000579- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

581
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000582- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000587- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
588 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
589 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
590
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000591- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000597
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000598- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

614
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000615- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
616 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
617 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

646
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000647- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000660- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
661
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000662- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
663 now ints rather than longs.
664
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000665- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
666 started after line 256.
667
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000668- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
669 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
670 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
671 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
672 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
673 an extension.

690
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000691- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
692 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
693 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
694
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000695- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

720
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000721- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
722 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
723 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
724
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000725- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

732
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000733- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first

735 now.
736
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000737Extension Modules
738-----------------
739
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000740- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
741 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
742 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000743
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000744- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
745 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
746
747- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
748 on non-Windows platforms.
749
750- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
751 integer or long, without range checking.
752
753- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
754 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
755 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
756
757- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
758 with the --without-threads option.
759
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000760- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
761 access, again.
762

775
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000776- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000777 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
778 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
779
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000780- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
781 with spaces in it.
782
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000783- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
784 of Tcl/Tk.
785
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000786- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

813
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000814- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
815 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
816 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
817
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000818- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
819 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
820
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000821- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
822
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000823- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000824 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000825
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000826- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
827 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
828 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
829 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
830 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
831
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000832- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
833 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
834
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000835- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
836 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
837 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
838 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
839 requested.
840
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000841- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
842 away like they were in Python 2.4.
843
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000844- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
845 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
846 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
847
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000848- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
849 Unicode 4.1.
850
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000851- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
852 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
853 fewer open calls on startup.
854
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000855- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
856 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
857 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
858 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
859 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
860
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000861- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
862 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
863 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
864 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
865
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000866- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
867
868- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
869 "base" parameter.
870
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000871- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
872 objects.
873
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000874- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
875 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
876 C library function.
877
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000878- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
879
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000880- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
881
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000882- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
883 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
884 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
885 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
886
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000887- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
888
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000889- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
890
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000891- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
892 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
893 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
894 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
895
896- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
897 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
898 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
899 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

956 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
957
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000958- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

998 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
999 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1000 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1001 of the matching pair.

1021 for lookup.
1022
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001023- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1024 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1025 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1026 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1027 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1048
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001049- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1105-----------------
1106
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001107- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1108 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1109
1110 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1111 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1112 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1113 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1114 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1115
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001116- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1117
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001118- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1119 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1120 multiple times.
1121
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001122- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1123 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1124 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1125
1126- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1127 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1128
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001129- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1130 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1131 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001132 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001133 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001134
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001135 def __hash__(self):
1136 return id(self) # WRONG
1137
1138 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1139 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001140 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001141 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1142 necessarily so.
1143
1144- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001145 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001146 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001147 #1454844)
1148
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001149- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1150 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1151 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1152 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1153 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001154
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001155Extension Modules

1160
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001161- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1162 fails with an error condition.
1163

1167 the cachesize parameter.
1168
1169- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1170 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1171
1172- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1173 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001174
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001175- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1183 abusing errno.
1184
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001185- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

1187 or exception is ignored).
1188
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001189- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1190 caught inside exit handlers.
1191
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001192- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1193 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1194 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1195 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1196
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001197- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1198 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1199
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001200- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1201 .zip or .egg files.
1202
1203- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1204 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1205 in the filesystem or zip files.
1206
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001207- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1208 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1209 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1210 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001211
Tim Petersc7605f22006-04-17 21:12:33 +00001212- The ``__del__`` method of class ``local`` in module ``_threading_local``
1213 returned before accomplishing any of its intended cleanup.
1214

1256
Tim Peters8931ff12006-05-13 23:28:20 +00001257- ``PyString_FromFormat``, ``PyErr_Format``, and ``PyString_FromFormatV``
1258 now accept formats "%u" for unsigned ints, "%lu" for unsigned longs,
1259 and "%zu" for unsigned integers of type ``size_t``.
1260

Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00001267- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
1268
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001269- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1270 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1271 the current Decimal context.
1272
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001273- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1274 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1275 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1276 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001302Core and builtins
1303-----------------
1304
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001305- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1306 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1307
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001308- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1309 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1310 end in .PYD.
1311
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001312- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1313 sys.stdout.encoding.
1314
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001315- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1316
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001317- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1318
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001319- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1320
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001321- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1322 5.4 and later versions.
1323
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001324- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1325 now gives a SyntaxError.
1326
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001327- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1328 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1329 (closes patch #1170323).
1330
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001331- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1332 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1333 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1334 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1335 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1336 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1337 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001338 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1339 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001340 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1341 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1342
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001343- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1344 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1345 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1346
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001347- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1348 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1349 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1350 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1351
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001352- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1353
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001354- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1355 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1356 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1357 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1358
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001359- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1360 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1361 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1362 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1363 absolute_import' is used.
1364
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001365- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1366 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1367 exceptions.
1368
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001369- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001370 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1371
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001372- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001373
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001374- Patch 1433928:
1375 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1376 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1377 KeyError.
1378
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001379- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1380 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1381 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001382 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001383 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1384 - The built-in file type.
1385 - The thread.LockType type.
1386 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1387 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1388 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001389
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001390- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1391 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1392
1393 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1394 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1395
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001396- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1397
1398- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1399 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1400 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1401 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1402 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001403
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001404- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1405 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1406 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1407
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001408- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1409 configure would break checking curses.h.
1410
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001411- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1412 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1413
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001414- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1415
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001416- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1417
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001418- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1419
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001420- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1421 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1422
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001423- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001425 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1426
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001427- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1428 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001429 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

1435
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001436- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001437 and long longs.
1438
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001439- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001440 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001441 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001442
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001443- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1444 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1445 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1446 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1447 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1448
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001449- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1468
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001469- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001470 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1471 was empty.
1472
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001473- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1474 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1475
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001476- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001490 (fixes bug #1119418).
1491
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001492- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1493
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001494- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1495 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1496
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001497- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1498 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1499 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1500
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001501- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1502
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001503- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1504 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1505
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001506- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1507 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1508 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001509 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001510 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1511 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1512 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1513 realloc.
1514
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001515- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1516 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1517
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001518- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1519 like their int counterparts.
1520
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001521- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1522 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1523 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1524 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1525 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1526
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001527- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1528 serializing floats.
1529
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001530- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1531 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1532 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1533
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001534- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1535 278.
1536
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001537- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1538 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1539 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1540 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001541 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001542 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001543 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001544
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001545- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1546 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1547 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1548 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1549
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001550- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1551 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1552 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1553 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1554 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1555
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001556- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1557 disabled caused a crash.
1558
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001559- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1560 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1561
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001562- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1566
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001567- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001568 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1569 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1570 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001571

1584
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001585- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001586 an ferror() call.
1587
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001588- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001599- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1600 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1601 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1602
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001603- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1604 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1605 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1606
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001607- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1608 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1609 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1610 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1611 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001822 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001823 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001824 module will not be built.

1851 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1852 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1853 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1854 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1855 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

2072 work as expected.
2073
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002074- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2130
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002131- Enhancements to the csv module:
2132
2133 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002134 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002135 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002136 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2137 reporting.
2138 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2139 dictates.
2140 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002141 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002142 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002143 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2144 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002145 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2146 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002147 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002148 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2149 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2150 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2151 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2152 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2153 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2154 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2155 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2156 without first creating a dialect class.
2157 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2158 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2159 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002160 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002161 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2162 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002163 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2164 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2165 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2166 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002167 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2168 This has been fixed.
2169
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002170- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2171 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2172 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2173 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2174
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002175- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2176
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002177- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2178 (Bug #951915).
2179
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002180- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2181 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2182 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002183 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002184
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002185- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2186
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002187- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2188 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2189
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002190- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2191
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002192- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2197
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002198- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2199
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002200- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2201 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2202 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2203
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002204- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002205 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002206
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002207- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2208 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2209 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2210
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002211- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2212 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2213 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002214
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002215- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002217
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002218- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2219 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2220
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002221- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2222 correctly.
2223
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002224- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2225 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2226 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2227 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2228 between two lines.
2229
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002230- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2231 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2232 handlers.
2233
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002234- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002235 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2236 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002237
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002238- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2239 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2248
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002249- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2250 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002251 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2252 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2253 special classes that use unicode.
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002254

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002280- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2281 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2282 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002283 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002285- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2286 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2287 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2288
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002289- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2290
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002291- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2292 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2293
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002294- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2295 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2296 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2297 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2298 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2299 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2300 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2301 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2302
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002303- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2304 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2305 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2306 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2309-----
2310
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002311- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2312 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2313 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2314 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2315 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2316 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2317 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2318 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2319 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2320 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2321
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002322- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2323
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002324- Removed PyRange_New().
2325
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002326- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2327 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2328 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2329 mappings.
