91
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000092Tests
93-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000094- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
95 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
96 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
97 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
98 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
99 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
100 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
101 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
102 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
103 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
104 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
105 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
106 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
107 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
108 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
109 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
110 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
111 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
112
113 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
114 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
115 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
116 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
117 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
118 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
119 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
120
121 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
122 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
123
124 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
125 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
126 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
127 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
128
129 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
130 run in parallel without issue.

134
Mark Dickinson65134662008-04-25 16:11:04 +0000135- Issue #1496032: On alpha, use -mieee when gcc is the compiler.
136
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000137- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
138 gcc is used as compiler.
139
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000140C API
141-----
142
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000143- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
144 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
145 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
146 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
147
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000148- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
149 warnings.

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000382 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000383
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000384- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
385
386- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000387
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000388- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see

390
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000391- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
392 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
393 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
394 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
395 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
396 module is:
397 from future_builtins import hex, oct
398
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000399- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
400 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
401 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
402 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
403 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
404 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
405
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000406- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
407 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
408 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
409 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
410 PyObject_Format().

421
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000422- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000423 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
424 OS earlier.

428
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000429- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
430 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
431
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000432- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

455 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
456 generator.
457
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000458- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000459 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000460 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
461 "else" suite.

584 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
585 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
586 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
587 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

635 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when

1994 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
1995
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00001996- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001997 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00001998 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
1999
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002000- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002002- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format and
2003 _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and PyLong_FromSsize_t
2004 public functions.
2005
2006- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2007
2008- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2009 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2010
2011- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2012 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2013 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2014 results with huge strings.
2015
2016- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2017 and Py_REFCNT.
2018
2019- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2020 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2021 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2022
2023- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2024
2025- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2026
2027- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2028
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002029- Added a new API function ``PyImport_ImportModuleNoBlock``.
2030
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002031- Bug #1637022: Prefix AST symbols with _Py_.
2032
2033- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2034 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2035
2036- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2037 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2038
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002039- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2040 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2041 some conditions.
2042
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002043- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002044 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
2045
