10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000015- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
16 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
17 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
18
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000019- Apply security patches from Apple.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000021- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
22 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
23
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000024- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
25 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000027- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
28 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
29 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
30
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000031- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
32 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
33 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
34 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
35 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
36 failed have been fixed.
37

39-------
40
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000041- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
42 raised an AttributeError.
43
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000044- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
45 asking for a specific length.
46
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000047- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
48 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
49
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000050- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
51
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000052- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
53 on a closed shelf.
54
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000055- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
56
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000057- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
58
59- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
60 invalid arguments.
61
62- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
63 with None arguments.
64
65- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
66 configuration files.
67
68- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
69
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000070- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
71 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
72 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
73
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +000074- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
75 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
76 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
77
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +000078Build
79-----
80
81- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
82
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +000083Documentation
84-------------
85
86- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
87 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
88 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
89 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

96
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000097Core and Builtins
98-----------------
99
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000100- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
101 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
102 an integer using operator.index().
103
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000104- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
105 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
106
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000107- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
108 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
109
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000110- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
111 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
112 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
113
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000114- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
115 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
116 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
117 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
118 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
119 level.
120
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000121- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
122 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
123 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
124 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
125 all imports from that module to fail.
126
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000127- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
128 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
129 new-style classes.
130
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000131- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
132 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
133 another file in sys.stdout.
134
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000135- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
136 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
137 another thread's dictionary.
138
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000139- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
140 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
141 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
142 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
143 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
144 10, -1).
145
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000146- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
147 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
148 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000149
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000150- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
151 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
152 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000153

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000170- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
171 a valid dlerror() message.
172
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000173- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000182- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
183 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000184 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000185 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
186 merged into trunk.

202 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
203
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000204- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
205 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000211 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
212 Prevents a deadlock.

215 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
216 default https port (443).
217
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000218- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
219 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
220 if the new process uses the threading module.
221
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000222Tests

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000653- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
654 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
655 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
656 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
657 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
658 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
659 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
660 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

721-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000722
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000723- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
724 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
725 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
726 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
727 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
728 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
729 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
730 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
731 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
732 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
733 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
734 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
735 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
736 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
737 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
738 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
739 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
740 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
741 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
742 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
743
744 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
745 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
746 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
747 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
748 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
749 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
750 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
751 access to the underlying socket used.
752
753 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
754 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
755 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000756
757 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000758 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000759 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
760 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
761
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000762 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
763 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1041
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001042- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1043 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

1047 module is:
1048 from future_builtins import hex, oct

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001050- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1051 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1052 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1053 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1054 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1055 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1056
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001057- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
