13-----------------
14
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000015- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
16 added.
17
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000018- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
19 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
20
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000021- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
22 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
23
24- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
25 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000026
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4c270c2008-01-14 00:29:41 +000027- Patch #1700288: added a type attribute cache that caches method accesses,
28 resulting in speedups in heavily object-oriented code.
29
Neal Norwitz3fc15b82008-01-10 05:42:58 +000030- Bug #1776: __import__() no longer accepts filenames on any platform.
31 The first parameter to __import__() must be a valid module name.
Christian Heimes3403f152008-01-09 19:56:33 +000032
Georg Brandlaed6c662008-01-07 17:25:53 +000033- Patch #1668: renamed THREADDEBUG envvar to PYTHONTHREADDEBUG.

36 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
37 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
38
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000039- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
40 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
41 of 'error code 193'.
42
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000043- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
44
Christian Heimeseebb79c2008-01-03 22:32:26 +000045- Issue #1640: Added math.isinf(x), math.isnan(x) and math.copysign(x, y)
46 functions.

Christian Heimes0a8143f2007-12-18 23:22:54 +000048- Issue #1635: Platform independent creation and representation of NaN
49 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
50 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
51
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000052- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
53 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
54 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
55
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000056- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
57
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000058- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
59 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
60
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000061- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
62 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
63 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.
64

72 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
73 __package__ attribute.
74
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000075- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
76 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
77
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000078- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
79 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
80 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
81 results with huge strings.
82
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000083- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and
84 if the deallocation of its frames somehow calls the PyGILState_Ensure() /
85 PyGILState_Release() functions.
86
Christian Heimes28104c52007-11-27 23:16:44 +000087- Expose the Py_Py3kWarningFlag as sys.py3kwarning.

93 It now correctly saves its state between chunks of data.
94
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000095- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
96 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
97 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
98
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +000099- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
100 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
101 paused generator.
102
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000103- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

108
Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000109- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
110 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
111 shifts from ints to longs.
112
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000113- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
114 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
115 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
116 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
117 respectively, fixed the issues.
118
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000119- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
120 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
121 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
122 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
123
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000124- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
125 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
126
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000127- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
128 list by using the recursion counter.
129
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000130- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
131 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
132 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
133 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
134 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
135
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000136- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

160 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
161
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000162- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
163 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
164
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000165- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
166 calls.
167
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000168- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000178 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
179
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000180- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

185
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000186- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
187 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
188
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000189- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
190
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000191- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
192 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
193 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
194 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
195 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000196 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
197 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000198
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000199- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
200 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
201 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
202 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
203
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000204- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

206
Collin Winter77c67bd2007-03-16 04:11:30 +0000207- Patch #1642547: Fix an error/crash when encountering syntax errors in

214 name.
215
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000216- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
217
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +0000218- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
219 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
220
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000221- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
222 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
223 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
224
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000225- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
226 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
227
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000228- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
229
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000230- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
231 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
232 ValueError.
233
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000234- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
235 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
236 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
237
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000238- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
239 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
240 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
241 on other exceptions or normal program exit.
242

244
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000245- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
246
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000247- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
248 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
249
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000250- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
251 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.
252

254
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000255- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
256 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.
257

1389Core and builtins
1390-----------------
1391
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001392- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001393 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1394 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001395
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001396 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1397 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1398 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1399 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1400 exception, logged, etc.
1401
1402 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1403 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001404
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001405- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1406
1407- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1408 with new-style classes.
1409
1410- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1411 classic classes.
1412
1413- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1414 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1415 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1416 to effectively use __index__.
1417
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001418- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1419 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1420
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001421- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
1422
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001423- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1424 sys.stdin is closed.
1425
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001426- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1427 the Python dll again.
1428
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001429- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1430 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1431 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1432 will be regenerated.
1433
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001434- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1435 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1436 immediately popped off the stack.
1437
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001438- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +00001444- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1445 generated for generator expressions.
1446
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001447- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1448 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1449 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue

1552Core and builtins
1553-----------------
1554
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001555- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001556 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1557
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001558- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1559
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001560- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1561 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1562 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1563
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001564- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1565 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1566
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001567- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1568 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1569 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1570 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1571
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001572- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1573 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1574 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1575 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1576
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001577- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1587 had more than 255 blank lines.
1588
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001589- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
1590 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
1591
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001592- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001593 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001594 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001595
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001596- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001597 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001598 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
1599 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.

1608 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1609
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001610- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
1611 KeyboardInterrupt.
1612
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001613- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

1615
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +00001616- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
1617 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
1618
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001619- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001620 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +00001621 #1513611, and probably others.
1622
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001623- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1624 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1625
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001626- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1627 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1628 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1629 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1630 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1631
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001632- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +00001633 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].

Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +00001635- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
1636
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +00001637- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
1638 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +00001639
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +00001640- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
1641 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
1642
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001643- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
1644
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001645- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1646 value in the traceback module.
1647
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001648- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1649
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001650- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1651
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001652- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1653 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1654 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1655 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1656 tuple pre-2.4.
1657
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001658- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1659
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001660- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1661 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1662 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1663 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1664 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1665 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1666 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1667 charset and language parts).
1668
1669 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1670 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1671
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001672- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1673
1674- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1675 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1676
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001677- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1678 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1679 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1680 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1689
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +00001690- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +00001693- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

1703 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1704
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001705- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

1708
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001709- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1727 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1728
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001729- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1730 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1731 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1741- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1742 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1743
1744- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1745 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001746 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1759 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
1760
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001761- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1762 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1763
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001764- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1765 be released.
1766
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001767- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1768 and atof().
1769
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001770- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1771 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1772 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001773
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001774- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1775
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001776- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1777 now ints rather than longs.
1778
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001779- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1780 started after line 256.
1781
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001782- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1783 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1784 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1785 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1786 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1787 an extension.

1804
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001805- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1806 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1807 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1808
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001809- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001833- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1834
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001835- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1836 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1837 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1838
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001839- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1846
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001847- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1848 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1849 now.
1850
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001851Extension Modules
1852-----------------
1853
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001854- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1855 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1856 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001857
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001858- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1859 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1860
1861- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1862 on non-Windows platforms.
1863
1864- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1865 integer or long, without range checking.
1866
1867- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1868 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1869 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1870
1871- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1872 with the --without-threads option.
1873
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001874- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1878 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1879
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001880- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

1889
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001890- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001891 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1892 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1893
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001894- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1926-----------------
1927
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001928- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1929 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1930 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1931
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001932- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1933 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1934
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001935- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1936
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001937- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001938 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001939
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001940- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1941 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1942 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1943 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1944 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1945
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001946- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1947 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1948
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001949- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1950 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1951 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1952 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1953 requested.
1954
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001955- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1956 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1957
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001958- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1959 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1960 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1961
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001962- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1963 Unicode 4.1.
1964
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001965- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1966 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1967 fewer open calls on startup.
1968
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001969- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1970 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1971 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1972 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1973 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1974
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001975- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1976 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1977 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1978 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1979
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001980- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1981
1982- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1983 "base" parameter.
1984
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001985- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1986 objects.
1987
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001988- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1989 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1990 C library function.
1991
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001992- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1993
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001994- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1995
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001996- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1997 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1998 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1999 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2000
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002001- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
2002
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00002003- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
2004
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002005- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2006 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2007 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2008 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2009
2010- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2011 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2012 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2013 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2020- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
2021
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00002022- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char

2071
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002072- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

2112 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2113 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2114 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2115 of the matching pair.

2135 for lookup.
2136
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002137- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2138 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2139 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2140 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2141 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

2219-----------------
2220
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002221- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2222 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2223
2224 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
2225 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

2229
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002230- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2231
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002232- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2233 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2234 multiple times.
2235
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002236- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2237 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2238 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2239
2240- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2241 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2242
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002243- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2244 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2245 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002246 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002247 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002248
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002249 def __hash__(self):
2250 return id(self) # WRONG
2251
2252 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2253 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002254 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002255 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2256 necessarily so.
2257
2258- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002259 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002260 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002261 #1454844)
2262
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002263- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
2264 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2265 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2266 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2267 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002268

2274
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00002275- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

2281 the cachesize parameter.
2282
2283- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
2284 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
2285
2286- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
2287 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00002288
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00002289- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

2297 abusing errno.
2298
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00002299- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

2301 or exception is ignored).
2302
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00002303- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
2304 caught inside exit handlers.
2305
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00002306- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
2307 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
2308 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
2309 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
2310
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00002311- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
2312 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
2313
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00002314- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
2315 .zip or .egg files.
2316
2317- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
2318 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
2319 in the filesystem or zip files.
2320
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002321- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

2382
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002383- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2384 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2385 the current Decimal context.
2386
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002387- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2388 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2389 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2390 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

2417-----------------
2418
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002419- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2420 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2421
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002422- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2423 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2424 end in .PYD.
2425
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002426- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2427 sys.stdout.encoding.
2428
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002429- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2430
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002431- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2432
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002433- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2434
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002435- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2436 5.4 and later versions.
2437
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002438- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2439 now gives a SyntaxError.
2440
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002441- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2442 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2443 (closes patch #1170323).
2444
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002445- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2446 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2447 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2448 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2449 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2450 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2451 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002452 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2453 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002454 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2455 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2456
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002457- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2458 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2459 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2460
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002461- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2462 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2463 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2464 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2465
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002466- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2467
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002468- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2469 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2470 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2471 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2472
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002473- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2474 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2475 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2476 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2477 absolute_import' is used.
2478
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002479- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2480 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2481 exceptions.
2482
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002483- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002484 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2485
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002486- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002487
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002488- Patch 1433928:
2489 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2490 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2491 KeyError.
2492
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002493- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2494 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2495 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002496 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002497 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2498 - The built-in file type.
2499 - The thread.LockType type.
2500 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2501 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2502 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002503
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002504- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2505 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2506
2507 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2508 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2509
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002510- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2511
2512- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2513 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2514 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2515 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2516 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002517
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002518- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2519 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2520 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2521
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002522- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2523 configure would break checking curses.h.
2524
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002525- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2526 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2527
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002528- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

2531
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002532- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2533
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002534- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2535 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2536
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002537- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002539 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2540
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002541- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2542 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002543 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002544
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002545- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
2546 now encodes backslash correctly.
2547

2549
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002550- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00002551 and long longs.
2552
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002553- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002554 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002555 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002556
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002557- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2558 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2559 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2560 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2561 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2562
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002563- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

2582
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002583- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002584 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2585 was empty.
2586
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002587- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2588 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2589
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002590- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

2599
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00002600- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
2601 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
2602
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00002603- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00002604 (fixes bug #1119418).
2605
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00002606- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
2607
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002608- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2609 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2610
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002611- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2612 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2613 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2614
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002615- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2616
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002617- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2618 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2619
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002620- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2621 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2622 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002623 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002624 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2625 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2626 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2627 realloc.
2628
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002629- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
2630 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
2631
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002632- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2633 like their int counterparts.
2634
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002635- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2636 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2637 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2638 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2639 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2640
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002641- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2642 serializing floats.
2643
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002644- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2645 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2646 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2647
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002648- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2649 278.
2650
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002651- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2652 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2653 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2654 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002655 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002656 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002657 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002658
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002659- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2660 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2661 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2662 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2663
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002664- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2665 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2666 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2667 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2668 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2669
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002670- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2671 disabled caused a crash.
2672
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002673- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2674 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2675
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002676- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00002677 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

2680
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002681- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002682 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2683 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2684 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002685

2698
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002699- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002700 an ferror() call.
2701
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002702- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002713- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
2714 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
2715 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2716
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002717- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2718 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2719 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2720
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002721- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2722 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2723 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2724 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2725 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002936 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002937 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002938 module will not be built.

2963
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002964- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2965 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2966 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2967 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2968 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2969 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2970 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3244
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003245- Enhancements to the csv module:
3246
3247 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003248 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003249 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003250 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3251 reporting.
3252 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3253 dictates.
3254 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003255 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003256 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003257 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3258 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003259 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3260 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003261 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003262 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3263 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3264 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3265 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3266 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3267 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3268 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3269 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3270 without first creating a dialect class.
3271 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3272 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3273 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003274 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003275 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3276 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003277 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3278 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3279 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3280 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003281 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3282 This has been fixed.
3283
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003284- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3285 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3286 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3287 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3288
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003289- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3290

3292 (Bug #951915).
3293
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003294- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3295 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3296 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003297 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003298
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00003299- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
3300
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003301- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
3302 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
3303
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003304- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
3305

3313
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003314- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3315 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3316 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3317
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003318- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003319 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003320
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003321- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3322 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3323 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3324
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003325- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3326 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3327 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003328
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003329- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003331
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003332- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3333 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3334
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003335- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3336 correctly.
3337
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003338- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3339 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3340 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3341 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3342 between two lines.
3343
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003344- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3345 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3346 handlers.
3347
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003348- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003349 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3350 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003351
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003352- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003365 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3366 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3367 special classes that use unicode.

Martin v. Löwis147fbe52005-08-07 21:09:30 +00003388- Bug #1189330: configure did not correctly determine the necessary
3389 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
3390
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00003391- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
3392 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
3393
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003394- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3395 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3396 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003397 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003399- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3400 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3401 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
3402
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00003403- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
3404
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003405- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3406 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3407
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003408- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3409 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3410 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3411 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3412 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3413 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3414 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3415 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3416
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003417- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3418 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3419 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3420 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003422C API
3423-----
3424
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003425- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3426 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3427 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3428 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3429 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3430 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3431 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3432 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3433 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3434 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3435
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003436- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00003440- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
3441 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
3442 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
3443 mappings.
