8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000013- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
14 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
15 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
16 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
17 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
18 level.
19
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000020- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
21 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
22 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
23 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
24 all imports from that module to fail.
25
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000026- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
27 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
28 new-style classes.
29
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000030- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
31 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
32 another file in sys.stdout.
33
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000034- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
35 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
36 another thread's dictionary.
37
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000038- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
39 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
40 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
41 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
42 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
43 10, -1).
44
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000045- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000046 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000047 switch to the new compiler.
48
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000049- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
50 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
51 calls them via gc.collect().
52
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000053Library
54-------
55
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +000056- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
57 incomplete structure was created.
58
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +000059- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
60
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000061- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
62
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000063- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000064
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000065- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
66 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000067 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000068 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
69 merged into trunk.
70
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000071- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
72
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000073- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
74
75- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
76
77- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
78 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
79 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
80
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000081- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
82 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +000083
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000084- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
85 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
86
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000087- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
88 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
89
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000090- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
91 interrupted by a signal.
92
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000093- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +000094 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
95 Prevents a deadlock.
96
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +000097- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
98 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
99 default https port (443).
100
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000101Tests
102-----
103
104- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
105 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
106 have been added to test_warnings.
107

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000533- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
534 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
535 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
536 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
537 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
538 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
539 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
540 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

587 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
588 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
589 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
590
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000591- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
592 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
593 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
594
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000595- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available,
596 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
597 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
598 data files.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000603- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
604 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
605 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
606 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
607 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
608 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
609 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
610 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
611 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
612 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
613 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
614 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
615 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
616 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
617 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
618 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
619 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
620 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
621 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
622 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
623
624 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
625 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
626 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
627 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
628 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
629 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
630 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
631 access to the underlying socket used.
632
633 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
634 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
635 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000636
637 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000638 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000639 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
640 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
641
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000642 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
643 suite to run in parallel without issue.

916
917- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000918
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000919- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000920 issue 215555 for a discussion.
921
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000922- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
923 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
924 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
925 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
926 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
927 module is:
928 from future_builtins import hex, oct
929
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000930- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
931 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
932 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
933 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
934 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
935 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
936
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000937- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
938 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
939 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
940 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
941 PyObject_Format().
942
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000943- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
944 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
945 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000946
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000947- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

955 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
956 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000957
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000958- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
959 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
960 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000961
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000962- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
963 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
964
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000965- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

974 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000975
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000976- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

2600-----
2601
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002602- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free
2603 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
2604 and the upper limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an
2605 #ifndef block.
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002606
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002607- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly
2608 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2609 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002610
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002611- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

2614 and _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and
2615 PyLong_FromSsize_t public functions.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002616

2618
2619- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2620 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2621
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002622- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2623 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2624 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2625 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002626
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002627- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE,

2645- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2646 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2647
2648- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2649 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2650
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002651- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do
