61-----------------
62
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000063- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
64
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000065- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
66 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
67 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
68 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
69 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
70 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
71 64bit values.
72
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000073- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
74 error.
75
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000076- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
77 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
78 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
79 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
80
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000081- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
82 a unicode argument.
83
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000084- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
85
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000086- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000087 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000088 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
89
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000090- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000091 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
92 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
93 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
94 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
95 type object.
96
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000097- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
98
99- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
100
101- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
102
103- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
104
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000105- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
106 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
107
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000108- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
109 ``__delslice__``.
110
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000111- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
112 library targets in the Makefile.
113
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000114- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
115 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
116 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

125
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000126- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
127 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
128

132
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000133- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
134 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
135 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
136

167 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
168 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
169
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000170- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000235
236Core and Builtins
237-----------------
238
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000239- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
240 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
241 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
242 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
243 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
244 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
245 default.
246
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000247- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
248 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
249
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000250- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
251 value again.
252
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000253- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
254 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
255 and introducing s*.
256
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000257- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
258 object was stored in the freelist.
259
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000260- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
261 ValueError consistently across platforms.
262
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000263- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
264 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
265 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
266
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000267- Apply security patches from Apple.
268
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000269- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
270 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
271
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000272- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
273 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
274
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000275- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
276 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
277 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
278
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000279- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
280 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
281 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
282 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
283 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
284 failed have been fixed.
285
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000286Library
287-------
288
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000289- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
290
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000291- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
292 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
293
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000294- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
295 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
296 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
297
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000298- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
299 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
300 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
301 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
302 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
303 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
304
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000305- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
306 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
307
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000308- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
309
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000310- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
311
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000312- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
313
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000314- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
315 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
316
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000317- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
318 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
319
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000320- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
321 in a redirect.

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000433- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
434 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
435 an integer using operator.index().
436
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000437- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
438 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
439
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000440- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
441 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
442
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000443- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
444 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
445 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
446
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000447- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
448 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
449 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
450 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
451 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
452 level.
453
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000454- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
455 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
456 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
457 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
458 all imports from that module to fail.
459
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000460- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
461 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
462 new-style classes.
463
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000464- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

466 another file in sys.stdout.
467
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000468- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

470 another thread's dictionary.
471
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000472- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
473 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
474 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
475 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
476 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
477 10, -1).
478
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000479- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
480 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
481 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000519- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
520 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000521 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000522 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

926
Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +0000927- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
928
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000929- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
930 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000931 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000932
933 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
934
935 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
936
937 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
938
939 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
940
941 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
942
943 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000993- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
994 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
995 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
996 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
997 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
998 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
999 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1061-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001062
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001063- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1064 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1065 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1066 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1067 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1068 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1069 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1070 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1071 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1072 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1073 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1074 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1075 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1076 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1077 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1078 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1079 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1080 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1081 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1082 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1083
1084 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1085 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1086 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1087 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1088 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1089 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1090 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1091 access to the underlying socket used.
1092
1093 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1094 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1095 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001096
1097 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001098 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001099 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1100 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1101
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001102 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1103 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1381
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001382- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1383 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1384 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1385 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1386 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1387 module is:
1388 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1389
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001390- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1391 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1392 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1393 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1394 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1395 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1396
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001397- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1401 PyObject_Format().
1402
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001403- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1404 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1405 state.

1415 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1416 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001417
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001418- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1433 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1434 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001435
