290Core and builtins
291-----------------
292
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000293- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000294 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
295 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000296
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000297 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
298 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
299 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
300 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
301 exception, logged, etc.
302
303 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
304 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000305
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000306- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
307
308- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
309 with new-style classes.
310
311- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with

314- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
315 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
316 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
317 to effectively use __index__.
318
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000319- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash

326
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000327- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
328 the Python dll again.
329
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000330- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
331 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
332 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
333 will be regenerated.
334
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000335- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
336 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
337 immediately popped off the stack.
338
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000339- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

346 generated for generator expressions.
347
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000348- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
349 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
350 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
351 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
352
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000353- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000354 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is

360
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000361- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000362 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some

453Core and builtins
454-----------------
455
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000456- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000457 returned a long (see PEP 353).
458
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000459- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
460
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000461- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
462 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
463 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
464
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000465- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
466 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
467
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000468- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
469 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
470 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
471 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
472
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000473- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
474 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
475 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
476 the code to make that compiler happy again.
477
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000478- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

492
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000493- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000494 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000495 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000496
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000497- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000498 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000499 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

509 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
510
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000511- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

516
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000517- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
518 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
519
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000520- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000521 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000522 #1513611, and probably others.
523

525 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
526
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000527- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
528 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
529 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
530 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
531 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
532
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000533- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

547 value in the traceback module.
548

550
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000551- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
552
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000553- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
554 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
555 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
556 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
557 tuple pre-2.4.
558
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000559- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
560
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000561- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
562 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
563 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
564 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
565 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
566 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
567 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
568 charset and language parts).
569
570 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
571 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
572
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000573- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
574
575- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
576 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
577
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000578- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
579 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
580 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
581 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

593
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000594- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

596
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000597- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

605
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000606- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000607 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000608 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
609
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000610- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
611 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000612
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000613- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
614 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
615
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000616- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
617 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
618 sleepycat API allows.
619
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000620- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
621 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
622
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000623Tests
624-----
625
626- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
627 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
628 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
629
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000630- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
631 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
632 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

642- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
643 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
644
645- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
646 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000647 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000659- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
660 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
661
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000662- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
663 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
664
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000665- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
666 be released.
667
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000668- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
669 and atof().
670
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000671- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
672 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
673 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000674
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000675- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
676
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000677- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
678 now ints rather than longs.
679
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000680- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
681 started after line 256.
682
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000683- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
684 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
685 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
686 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
687 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
688 an extension.

705
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000706- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
707 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
708 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
709
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000710- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

735
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000736- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
737 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
738 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
739
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000740- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
741 statement (bug #1509132).
742
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000743- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

746 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
747
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000748- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
749 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
750 now.
751
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000752Extension Modules
753-----------------
754
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000755- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
756 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
757 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000758
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000759- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
760 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
761
762- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
763 on non-Windows platforms.
764
765- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
766 integer or long, without range checking.
767
768- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
769 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
770 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
771
772- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
773 with the --without-threads option.
774
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000775- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
776 access, again.
777

790
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000791- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000792 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
793 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
794
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000795- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
796 with spaces in it.
797
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000798- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
799 of Tcl/Tk.
800
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000801- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

827-----------------
828
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000829- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
830 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
831 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
832
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000833- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
834 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
835
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000836- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
837
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000838- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000839 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000840
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000841- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
842 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
843 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
844 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
845 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
846
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000847- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
848 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
849
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000850- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
851 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
852 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
853 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
854 requested.
855
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000856- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
857 away like they were in Python 2.4.
858
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000859- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
860 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
861 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
862
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000863- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
864 Unicode 4.1.
865
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000866- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
867 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
868 fewer open calls on startup.
869
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000870- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
871 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
872 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
873 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
874 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
875
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000876- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
877 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
878 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
879 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
880
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000881- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
882
883- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
884 "base" parameter.
885
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000886- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
887 objects.
888
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000889- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
890 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
891 C library function.
892
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000893- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
894
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000895- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
896
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000897- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
898 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
899 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
900 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
901
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000902- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
903
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000904- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
905
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000906- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
907 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
908 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
909 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
910
911- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
912 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances

1013 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1014 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1015 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1016 of the matching pair.

1036 for lookup.
1037
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001038- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1039 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1040 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1041 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1042 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1120-----------------
1121
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001122- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1123 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1124
1125 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1126 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1127 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1129 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1130
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001131- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1132
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001133- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1134 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1135 multiple times.
1136
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001137- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1138 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1139 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1140
1141- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1142 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1143
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001144- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1145 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1146 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001147 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001148 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001149
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001150 def __hash__(self):
1151 return id(self) # WRONG
1152
1153 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1154 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001155 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001156 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1157 necessarily so.
1158
1159- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001160 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001161 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001162 #1454844)
1163
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001164- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1165 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1166 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1167 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1168 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001169

1175
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001176- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1177 fails with an error condition.
1178
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001179- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1181- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1182 the cachesize parameter.
1183
1184- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1185 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1186
1187- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1188 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001189
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001190- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1191 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1197 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1198 abusing errno.
1199
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001200- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1201 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1202 or exception is ignored).
1203
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001204- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1205 caught inside exit handlers.
1206
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001207- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1208 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1209 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1210 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1211
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001212- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1213 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1214
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001215- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1216 .zip or .egg files.
1217
1218- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1219 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1220 in the filesystem or zip files.
1221
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001222- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1223 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory

1283
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001284- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1285 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1286 the current Decimal context.
1287
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001288- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1289 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1290 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1291 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1319
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001320- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1321 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1322
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001323- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1324 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1325 end in .PYD.
1326
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001327- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1328 sys.stdout.encoding.
1329
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001330- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1331
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001332- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1333
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001334- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1335
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001336- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1337 5.4 and later versions.
1338
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001339- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1340 now gives a SyntaxError.
1341
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001342- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1343 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1344 (closes patch #1170323).
1345
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001346- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1347 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1348 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1349 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1350 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1351 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1352 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001353 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1354 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001355 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1356 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1357
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001358- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1359 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1360 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1361
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001362- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1363 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1364 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1365 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1366
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001367- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1368
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001369- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1370 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1371 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1372 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1373
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001374- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1375 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1376 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1377 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1378 absolute_import' is used.
1379
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001380- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1381 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1382 exceptions.
1383
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001384- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001385 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1386
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001387- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001388
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001389- Patch 1433928:
1390 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1391 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1392 KeyError.
1393
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001394- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1395 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1396 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001397 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001398 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1399 - The built-in file type.
1400 - The thread.LockType type.
1401 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1402 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1403 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001404
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001405- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1406 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1407
1408 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1409 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1410
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001411- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1412
1413- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1414 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1415 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1416 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1417 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001418
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001419- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1420 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1421 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1422
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001423- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1424 configure would break checking curses.h.
1425
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001426- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1427 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1428
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001429- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

1432
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001433- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1434
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001435- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1436 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1437
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001438- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001440 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1441
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001442- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1443 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001444 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001445
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001446- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1447 now encodes backslash correctly.
1448

1450
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001451- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001452 and long longs.
1453
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001454- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001455 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001456 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001457
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001458- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1459 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1460 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1461 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1462 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1463
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001464- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1483
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001484- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001485 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1486 was empty.
1487
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001488- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be

1506
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001507- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1508
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001509- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1510 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1511
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001512- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1513 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1514 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1515
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001516- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1517

1519 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1520
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001521- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1522 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1523 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001524 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001525 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1526 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1527 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1528 realloc.
1529
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001530- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1532
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001533- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1534 like their int counterparts.
1535
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001536- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1537 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1538 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1539 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1540 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1541
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001542- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1543 serializing floats.
1544
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001545- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1546 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1547 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1548
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001549- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1550 278.
1551
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001552- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1553 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1554 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1555 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001556 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001557 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001558 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001559
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001560- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1561 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1562 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1563 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1564
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001565- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1566 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1567 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1568 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1569 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1570
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001571- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1572 disabled caused a crash.
1573
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001574- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1575 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1576
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001577- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001578 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1581
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001582- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001583 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1584 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1585 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001586

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001600- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001614- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1615 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1616 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1617
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001618- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1619 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1620 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1621
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001622- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1623 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1624 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1625 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1626 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001837 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001838 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001839 module will not be built.

1866 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1867 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1868 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1869 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1870 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

2145
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002146- Enhancements to the csv module:
2147
2148 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002149 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002150 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002151 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2152 reporting.
2153 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2154 dictates.
2155 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002156 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002157 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002158 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2159 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002160 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2161 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002162 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002163 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2164 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2165 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2166 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2167 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2168 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2169 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2170 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2171 without first creating a dialect class.
2172 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2173 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2174 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002175 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002176 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2177 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002178 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2179 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2180 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2181 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002182 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2183 This has been fixed.
2184
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002185- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2186 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2187 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2188 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2189
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002190- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2191

2193 (Bug #951915).
2194
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002195- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2196 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2197 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002198 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002199

2201
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002202- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2203 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2204
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002205- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2214
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002215- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2216 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2217 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2218
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002219- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002220 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002221
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002222- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2223 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2224 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2225
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002226- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2227 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2228 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002229
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002230- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002232
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002233- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2234 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``

2237 correctly.
2238
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002239- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2240 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2241 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2242 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2243 between two lines.
2244
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002245- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2246 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2247 handlers.
2248
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002249- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002250 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2251 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002266 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2267 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2268 special classes that use unicode.

Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002284- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2285 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
2286
Martin v. Löwisd5845ec2005-12-30 12:31:38 +00002287- Use -xcode=pic32 for CCSHARED on Solaris with SunPro.
2288
Martin v. Löwis147fbe52005-08-07 21:09:30 +00002289- Bug #1189330: configure did not correctly determine the necessary
2290 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2291
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002292- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2293 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2294
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002295- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2296 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2297 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002298 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002299
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002300- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2301 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2302 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2303
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002304- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2305
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002306- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2307 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2308
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002309- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2310 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2311 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2312 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2313 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2314 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2315 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2316 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2317
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002318- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2319 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2320 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2321 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002323C API
2324-----
2325
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002326- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2327 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2328 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2329 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2330 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2331 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2332 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2333 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2334 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2335 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2336
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002337- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2338

2340
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002341- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2342 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2343 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2344 mappings.
