16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and

96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219

221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

1407Core and builtins
1408-----------------
1409
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001410- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001411 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1412 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001413
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001414 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1415 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1416 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1417 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1418 exception, logged, etc.
1419
1420 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1421 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001422
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001423- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

1428- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1429 classic classes.
1430
1431- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1432 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1433 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1434 to effectively use __index__.
1435
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001436- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1437 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1438

1446
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001447- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event

1464
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001465- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001573- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

1575
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001576- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1577
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001578- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1579 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1580 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1581
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001582- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1583 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1584
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001585- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1586 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1587 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1588 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1589
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001590- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1591 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1592 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1593 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1594
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001595- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1609
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001610- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001611 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001612 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001615 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001616 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +00001628- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
1629 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1630
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001631- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

1646
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001647- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1648 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1649 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1650 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1651 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1652
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001653- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

1670
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001671- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1672
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001673- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1674 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1675 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1676 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1677 tuple pre-2.4.
1678
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001679- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1680
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001681- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1682 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1683 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1684 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1685 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1686 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1687 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1688 charset and language parts).
1689
1690 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1691 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1692
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001693- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1694
1695- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1696 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1697
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001698- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1699 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1700 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1701 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1724 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1725
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001726- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +00001727 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +00001728 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
1729
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001730- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
1731 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001732
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001733- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
1734 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
1735
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +00001736- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
1737 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1738 sleepycat API allows.
1739
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001740- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
1741 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
1742
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +00001743Tests
1744-----
1745
1746- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1747 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1748 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1749
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001750- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1751 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1752 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1760---
1761
1762- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1763 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1764
1765- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1766 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001767 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1780 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
1781
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001782- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1783 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1784
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001785- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1786 be released.
1787
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001788- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1789 and atof().
1790
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001791- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1792 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1793 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001794
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001795- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1796
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001797- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1798 now ints rather than longs.
1799
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001800- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1801 started after line 256.
1802
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001803- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1804 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1805 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1806 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1807 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1808 an extension.

1825
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001826- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1827 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1828 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1829
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001830- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1855
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001856- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1857 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1858 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1859
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001860- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1867
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001868- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1869 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1870 now.
1871
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001872Extension Modules
1873-----------------
1874
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001875- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1876 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1877 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001878
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001879- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1880 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.

1886 integer or long, without range checking.
1887
1888- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1889 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1890 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1891
1892- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1893 with the --without-threads option.
1894
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001895- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1910
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001911- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001912 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1913 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1914
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001915- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1947-----------------
1948
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001949- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1950 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1951 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1952
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001953- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1954 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1955
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001956- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1957
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001958- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001959 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001960
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001961- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1962 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1963 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1964 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1965 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1966
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001967- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1968 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1969
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001970- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1971 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1972 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1973 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1974 requested.
1975
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001976- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1977 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1978
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001979- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1980 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1981 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1982
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001983- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1984 Unicode 4.1.
1985
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001986- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1987 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1988 fewer open calls on startup.
1989
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001990- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1991 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1992 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1993 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1994 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1995
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001996- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1997 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1998 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1999 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2000
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002001- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2002
2003- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2004 "base" parameter.
2005
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002006- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2007 objects.
2008
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002009- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2010 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
2011 C library function.
2012
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00002013- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
2014
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00002015- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
2016
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002017- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2018 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2019 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2020 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.

2025
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002026- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2027 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2028 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2029 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2030
2031- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2032 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2033 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2034 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2092
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002093- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

2131
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002132- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2133 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2134 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2135 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2136 of the matching pair.

2153 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002154
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002155- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2156 for lookup.
2157
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002158- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2159 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2160 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2161 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2162 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

2183
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002184- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2241
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002242- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2243 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2244
2245 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
2246 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

2250
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002251- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2252
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002253- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2254 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2255 multiple times.
2256
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002257- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2258 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2259 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2260
2261- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2262 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2263
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002264- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2265 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2266 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002267 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002268 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002269
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002270 def __hash__(self):
2271 return id(self) # WRONG
2272
2273 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2274 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002275 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002276 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2277 necessarily so.
2278
2279- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002280 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002281 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002282 #1454844)
2283
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002284- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
2285 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2286 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2287 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2288 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002289

2295
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00002296- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
2297 fails with an error condition.
2298
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00002299- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

2301- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
2302 the cachesize parameter.
2303
2304- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
2305 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
2306
2307- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
2308 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00002309
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00002310- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

2318 abusing errno.
2319
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00002320- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

2322 or exception is ignored).
2323

2403
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002404- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2405 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2406 the current Decimal context.
2407
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002408- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2409 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2410 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2411 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002437Core and builtins
2438-----------------
2439
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002440- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2441 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2442
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002443- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2444 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2445 end in .PYD.
2446
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002447- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2448 sys.stdout.encoding.
2449
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002450- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2451
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002452- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2453
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002454- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2455
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002456- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2457 5.4 and later versions.
2458
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002459- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2460 now gives a SyntaxError.
2461
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002462- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2463 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2464 (closes patch #1170323).
2465
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002466- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2467 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2468 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2469 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2470 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2471 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2472 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002473 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2474 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002475 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2476 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2477
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002478- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2479 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2480 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2481
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002482- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2483 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2484 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2485 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2486
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002487- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2488
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002489- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2490 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2491 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2492 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2493
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002494- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2495 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2496 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2497 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2498 absolute_import' is used.
2499
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002500- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2501 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2502 exceptions.
2503
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002504- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002505 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2506
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002507- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002508
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002509- Patch 1433928:
2510 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2511 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2512 KeyError.
2513
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002514- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2515 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2516 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002517 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002518 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2519 - The built-in file type.
2520 - The thread.LockType type.
2521 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2522 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2523 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002524
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002525- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2526 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2527
2528 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2529 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2530
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002531- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2532
2533- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2534 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2535 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2536 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2537 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002538
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002539- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2540 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2541 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2542
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002543- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2544 configure would break checking curses.h.
2545
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002546- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2547 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2548
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002549- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

2552
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002553- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2554
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002555- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2556 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2557
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002558- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002560 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2561
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002562- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2563 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002564 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

2573
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002574- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002575 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002576 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002577
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002578- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2579 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2580 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2581 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2582 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2583
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002584- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

2603
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002604- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002605 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002641- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2642 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2643 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002644 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002645 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2646 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2647 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2648 realloc.

2664
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002665- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2666 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2667 of floats now simply copy bytes around.

2673 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2674 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2675 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002680- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is

2683 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2684
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002685- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before

2687 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2688 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002957 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002958 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002959 module will not be built.

2984
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002985- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2986 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2987 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2988 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2989 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2990 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2991 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3265
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003266- Enhancements to the csv module:
3267
3268 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003269 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003270 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003271 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3272 reporting.
3273 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3274 dictates.
3275 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003276 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003277 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003278 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3279 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003280 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3281 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003282 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003283 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3284 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3285 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3286 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3287 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3288 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3289 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3290 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3291 without first creating a dialect class.
3292 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3293 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3294 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003295 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003296 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3297 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003298 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3299 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3300 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3301 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003302 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3303 This has been fixed.
3304
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003305- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3306 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3307 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3308 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3309
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003310- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3311

3313 (Bug #951915).
3314
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003315- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3316 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3317 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003318 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003319

3321
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003322- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
3323 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
3324
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003325- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
3326

3332
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003333- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3334
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003335- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3336 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3337 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3338
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003339- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003340 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003341
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003342- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3343 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3344 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3345
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003346- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3347 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3348 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003349
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003350- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3351 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003352
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003353- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3354 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3355
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003356- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3357 correctly.
3358
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003359- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3360 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3361 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3362 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3363 between two lines.
3364
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003365- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3366 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3367 handlers.
3368
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003369- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003370 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3371 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003372
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003373- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
3374 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3375

3382 touch the recursion limit.
3383
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003384- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3385 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003386 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and

3416 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3417 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003418 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003419
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003420- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3421 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3422 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

3425
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003426- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3427 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3428
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003429- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3430 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3431 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3432 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3433 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3434 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3435 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3436 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3437
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003438- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3439 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3440 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3441 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003443C API
3444-----
3445
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003446- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3447 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3448 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3449 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3450 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3451 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3452 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3453 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3454 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3455 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3456
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003457- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
3458
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00003459- Removed PyRange_New().
3460
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00003461- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
3462 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
3463 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
3464 mappings.
