288Core and builtins
289-----------------
290
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000291- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000292 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
293 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000294
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000295 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
296 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
297 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
298 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
299 exception, logged, etc.
300
301 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
302 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000303
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000304- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
305
306- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
307 with new-style classes.
308
309- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
310 classic classes.
311
312- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
313 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t

331 will be regenerated.
332
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000333- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored

453
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000454- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000455 returned a long (see PEP 353).
456
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000457- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
458
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000459- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
460 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
461 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
462
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000463- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
464 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
465
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000466- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
467 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
468 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
469 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
470
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000471- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
472 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
473 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
474 the code to make that compiler happy again.
475
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000476- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

490
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000491- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000492 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000493 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000495- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000496 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000497 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

507 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
508
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000509- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

514
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000515- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
516 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
517
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000518- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000519 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000520 #1513611, and probably others.
521

523 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
524
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000525- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
526 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
527 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
528 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
529 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
530
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000531- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

548
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000549- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
550
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000551- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
552 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
553 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
554 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
555 tuple pre-2.4.
556
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000557- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
558
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000559- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
560 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
561 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
562 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
563 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
564 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
565 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
566 charset and language parts).
567
568 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
569 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
570
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000571- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
572
573- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
574 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
575
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000576- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
577 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
578 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
579 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000604- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000605 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000606 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
607
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000608- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
609 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000610
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000611- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
612 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
613
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000614- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
615 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
616 sleepycat API allows.
617
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000618- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
619 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
620
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000621Tests
622-----
623
624- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
625 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
626 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
627
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000628- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
629 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
630 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

640- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
641 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
642
643- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
644 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000645 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

656
Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000657- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
658 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
659
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000660- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
661 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
662
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000663- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
664 be released.
665
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000666- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
667 and atof().
668
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000669- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
670 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
671 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000672
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000673- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
674
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000675- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
676 now ints rather than longs.
677
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000678- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
679 started after line 256.
680
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000681- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
682 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
683 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
684 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
685 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
686 an extension.

695
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000696- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +0000697 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
698 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

703
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000704- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
705 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
706 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
707
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000708- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

724 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
725
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +0000726- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted

Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +0000732- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
733
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000734- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
735 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
736 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
737
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000738- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
739 statement (bug #1509132).
740
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000741- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000743- A bug was fixed in logging.config.fileConfig() which caused a crash on
744 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
745
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000746- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
747 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
748 now.
749
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000750Extension Modules
751-----------------
752
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000753- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
754 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
755 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000756
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000757- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
758 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
759
760- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
761 on non-Windows platforms.
762
763- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
764 integer or long, without range checking.
765
766- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
767 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
768 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
769
770- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
771 with the --without-threads option.
772
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000773- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
774 access, again.
775
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000776- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with
777 a KeyboardInterrupt.
778
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000779- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

788
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000789- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000790 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
791 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
792
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000793- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
794 with spaces in it.
795
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000796- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
797 of Tcl/Tk.
798
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000799- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

824Core and builtins
825-----------------
826
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000827- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
828 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
829 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
830
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000831- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
832 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
833
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000834- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
835
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000836- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000837 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000838
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000839- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
840 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
841 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
842 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
843 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
844
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000845- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
846 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
847
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000848- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
849 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
850 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
851 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
852 requested.
853
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000854- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
855 away like they were in Python 2.4.
856
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000857- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
858 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
859 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
860
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000861- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
862 Unicode 4.1.
863
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000864- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
865 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
866 fewer open calls on startup.
867
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000868- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
869 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
870 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
871 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
872 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
873
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000874- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
875 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
876 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
877 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
878
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000879- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
880
881- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
882 "base" parameter.
883
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000884- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
885 objects.
886
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000887- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
888 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
889 C library function.
890
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000891- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
892
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000893- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
894
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000895- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
896 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
897 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
898 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
899
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000900- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
901
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000902- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
903
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000904- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
905 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
906 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
907 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
908
909- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
910 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances

1011 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1012 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1013 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1014 of the matching pair.

1034 for lookup.
1035
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001036- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1037 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1038 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1039 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1040 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1118-----------------
1119
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001120- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1121 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1122
1123 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1124 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1125 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1128
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001129- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1130
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001131- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1132 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1133 multiple times.
1134
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001135- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1136 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1137 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1138
1139- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1140 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1141
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001142- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1143 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1144 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001145 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001146 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001147
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001148 def __hash__(self):
1149 return id(self) # WRONG
1150
1151 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1152 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001153 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001154 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1155 necessarily so.
1156
1157- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001158 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001159 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001160 #1454844)
1161
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001162- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1163 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1164 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1165 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1166 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001167

1172 is a macro.
1173
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001174- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1175 fails with an error condition.
1176
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001177- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1178
1179- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1180 the cachesize parameter.
1181
1182- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1183 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1184
1185- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1186 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001187
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001188- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1189 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1195 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1196 abusing errno.
1197
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001198- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1199 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1200 or exception is ignored).
1201
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001202- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1203 caught inside exit handlers.
1204
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001205- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1206 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1207 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1208 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1209
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001210- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1211 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1212
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001213- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1214 .zip or .egg files.
1215
1216- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1217 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1218 in the filesystem or zip files.
1219
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001220- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1221 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory

1281
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001282- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1283 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1284 the current Decimal context.
1285
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001286- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1287 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1288 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1289 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1317
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001318- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1319 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1320
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001321- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1322 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1323 end in .PYD.
1324
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001325- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1326 sys.stdout.encoding.
1327
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001328- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1329
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001330- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1331
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001332- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1333
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001334- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1335 5.4 and later versions.
1336
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001337- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1338 now gives a SyntaxError.
1339
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001340- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1341 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1342 (closes patch #1170323).
1343
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001344- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1345 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1346 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1347 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1348 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1349 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1350 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001351 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1352 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001353 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1354 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1355
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001356- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1357 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1358 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1359
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001360- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1361 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1362 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1363 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1364
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001365- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1366
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001367- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1368 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1369 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1370 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1371
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001372- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1373 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1374 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1375 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1376 absolute_import' is used.
1377
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001378- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1379 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1380 exceptions.
1381
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001382- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001383 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1384
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001385- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001386
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001387- Patch 1433928:
1388 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1389 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1390 KeyError.
1391
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001392- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1393 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1394 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001395 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001396 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1397 - The built-in file type.
1398 - The thread.LockType type.
1399 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1400 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1401 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001402
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001403- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1404 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1405
1406 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1407 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1408
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001409- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1410
1411- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1412 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1413 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1414 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1415 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001416
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001417- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1418 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1419 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1420
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001421- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1422 configure would break checking curses.h.
1423
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001424- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1425 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1426
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001427- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1428
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001429- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1430
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001431- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1432
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001433- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1434 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1435
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001436- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001438 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1439
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001440- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1441 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001442 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001444- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1445 now encodes backslash correctly.
1446
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001447- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1448
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001449- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001450 and long longs.
1451
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001452- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001453 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001454 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001455
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001456- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1457 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1458 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1459 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1460 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1461
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001462- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1481
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001482- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001483 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1484 was empty.
1485
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001486- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be

1496 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1497 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1498
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001499- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1500 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).

1504
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001505- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1506
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001507- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1508 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1509
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001510- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1511 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1512 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1513
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001514- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1515
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001516- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1517 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1518
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001519- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1520 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1521 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001522 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001523 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1524 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1525 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1526 realloc.
1527
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001528- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1530
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001531- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1532 like their int counterparts.
1533
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001534- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1535 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1536 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1537 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1538 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1539
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001540- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1541 serializing floats.
1542
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001543- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1544 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1545 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1546
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001547- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1548 278.
1549
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001550- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1551 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1552 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1553 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001554 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001555 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001556 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001557
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001558- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1559 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1560 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1561 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1562
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001563- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1564 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1565 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1566 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1567 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1568
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001569- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1570 disabled caused a crash.
1571
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001572- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1573 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1574
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001575- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001576 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1579
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001580- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001581 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1582 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1583 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001584

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001598- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001612- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1613 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1614 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1615
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001616- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1617 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1618 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1619
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001620- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1621 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1622 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1623 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1624 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001835 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001836 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001837 module will not be built.

1864 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1865 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1866 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1867 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1868 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1869 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2143
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002144- Enhancements to the csv module:
2145
2146 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002147 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002148 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002149 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2150 reporting.
2151 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2152 dictates.
2153 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002154 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002155 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002156 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2157 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002158 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2159 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002160 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002161 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2162 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2163 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2164 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2165 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2166 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2167 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2168 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2169 without first creating a dialect class.
2170 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2171 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2172 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002173 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002174 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2175 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002176 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2177 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2178 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2179 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002180 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2181 This has been fixed.
2182
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002183- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2184 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2185 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2186 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2187
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002188- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2189

2191 (Bug #951915).
2192
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002193- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2194 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2195 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002196 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002197
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002198- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2199
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002200- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2201 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2202
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002203- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2212
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002213- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2214 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2215 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2216
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002217- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002218 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002219
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002220- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2221 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2222 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2223
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002224- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2225 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2226 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002227
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002228- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002230
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002231- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2232 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2233

2235 correctly.
2236
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002237- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2238 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2239 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2240 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2241 between two lines.
2242
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002243- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2244 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2245 handlers.
2246
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002247- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002248 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2249 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002282- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2283 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
2284
Martin v. Löwisd5845ec2005-12-30 12:31:38 +00002285- Use -xcode=pic32 for CCSHARED on Solaris with SunPro.
2286
Martin v. Löwis147fbe52005-08-07 21:09:30 +00002287- Bug #1189330: configure did not correctly determine the necessary
2288 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2289
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002290- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2291 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2292
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002293- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2294 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2295 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002296 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002297
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002298- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2299 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2300 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2301
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002302- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2303
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002304- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2305 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2306
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002307- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2308 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2309 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2310 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2311 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2312 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2313 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2314 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2315
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002316- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2317 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2318 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2319 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002321C API
2322-----
2323
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002324- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2325 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2326 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2327 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2328 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2329 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2330 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2331 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2332 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2333 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2334
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002335- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2336

2338
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002339- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2340 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2341 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2342 mappings.
