140 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
141
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +0000142- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
143 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
144 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +0000145 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
146 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +0000147 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
148 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
149 DeprecationWarning.
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +0000150
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000151Library

172
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000173- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
174 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
175 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000176
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +0000177- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before

191 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
192 build documentation for more information.
193
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000194- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
195 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
196 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
197 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
198
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000199- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
200 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
201 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
202
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000203- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
204 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
205 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
206
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000207Tests
208-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000209- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
210 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
211 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
212 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
213 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
214 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
215 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
216 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
217 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
218 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
219 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
220 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
221 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
222 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
223 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
224 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
225 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
226 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
227
228 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
229 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
230 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
231 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
232 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
233 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
234 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
235
236 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
237 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
238
239 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
240 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
241 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
242 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
243
244 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
245 run in parallel without issue.

251
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000252- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
253 gcc is used as compiler.
254
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000255- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
256 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

262 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
263 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
264 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
265
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000266- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k

687 shifts from ints to longs.
688
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000689- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
690 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
691 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
692 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
693 respectively, fixed the issues.

707 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
708 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
709 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
710 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000757- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
758 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
759 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
760 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
761 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000762 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
763 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000764
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000765- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
766 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
767 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
768 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.

790
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000791- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002120 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002121 it does not steal a reference to the added item.

2137 results with huge strings.
2138
2139- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2140 and Py_REFCNT.

2157 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
