Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000015- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
16 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
17
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000018- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
19 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.

40Core and Builtins
41-----------------
42
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +000043- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
44 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
45 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
46 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
47 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
48 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
49 default.
50
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +000051- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
52 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
53
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +000054- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
55 value again.
56
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000057- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
58 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
59 and introducing s*.
60
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000061- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
62 object was stored in the freelist.
63
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000064- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
65 ValueError consistently across platforms.
66
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000067- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
68 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
69 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
70
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000071- Apply security patches from Apple.
72
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000073- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
74 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
75
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000076- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
77 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
78
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000079- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
80 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
81 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
82
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000083- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
84 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
85 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
86 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
87 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
88 failed have been fixed.
89
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000090Library
91-------
92
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +000093- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
94
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +000095- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
96 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
97
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000098- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
99 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
100 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
101
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000102- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
103 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
104 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
105 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
106 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
107 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
108
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000109- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
110 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
111
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000112- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
113
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000114- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
115
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000116- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
117
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000118- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
119 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
120
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000121- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
122 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
123
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000124- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
125 in a redirect.
126
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000127- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000128 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000129
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000130- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
131 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
132
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000133- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
134 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
135 regular expression.
136
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000137- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
138 thread-safe.
139
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000140- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
141 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
142 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
143
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000144- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
145
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000146- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
147 menu entries were not deleted.
148
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000149- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
150 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
151
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000152- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
153 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
154
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000155- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
156 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
157 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
158
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000159- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
160 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
161 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
162
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000163- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
164 the reload() built-in has been removed.
165
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000166- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000167 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000168 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
169 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
170 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
171 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
172 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000173
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000174- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
175 raised an AttributeError.
176
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000177- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000178 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
179 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000180
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000181- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
182 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
183
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000184- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
185
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000186- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
187 on a closed shelf.

190
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000191- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
192

194 invalid arguments.
195
196- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
197 with None arguments.
198
199- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
200 configuration files.
201
202- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
203
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000204- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
205 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
206 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
207
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000208- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
209 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
210 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.

218-------------
219
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000220- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
221 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
222
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000223- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
224 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
225 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
226 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

231
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000232*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
233
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000234Core and Builtins
235-----------------
236
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000237- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
238 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
239 an integer using operator.index().
240
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000241- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
242 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
243
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000244- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
245 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
246
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000247- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
248 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
249 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
250
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000251- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
252 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
253 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
254 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
255 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
256 level.
257
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000258- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
259 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
260 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
261 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
262 all imports from that module to fail.
263
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000264- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
265 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
266 new-style classes.
267
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000268- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
269 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
270 another file in sys.stdout.
271
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000272- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
273 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
274 another thread's dictionary.
275
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000276- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
277 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
278 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
279 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
280 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
281 10, -1).
282
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000283- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
284 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
285 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000286
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000287- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
288 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
289 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000290
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000291Library
292-------
293
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000294- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
295 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
296 error when they failed.
297
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000298- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
299
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000300- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
301
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000302- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
303
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +0000304- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
305
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000306- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
307 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
308
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000309- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000310
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000311- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
312 a valid dlerror() message.
313
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000314- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
315 incomplete structure was created.
316

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000796- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
797 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
798 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000866- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
867 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
868 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
869 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
870 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
871 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
872 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
873 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
874 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
875 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
876 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
877 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
878 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
879 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
880 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
881 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
882 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
883 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
884 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
885 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
886
887 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
888 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
889 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
890 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
891 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
892 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
893 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
894 access to the underlying socket used.

1173-----------------
1174
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001175- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001176 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001177
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001178- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1179
1180- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001181
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001182- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001183 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1184
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001185- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1186 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1187 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1188 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1189 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1190 module is:
1191 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1192
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001193- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1194 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1195 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1196 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1197 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1198 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1199
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001200- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1201 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1202 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1203 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1204 PyObject_Format().
1205
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001206- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1207 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1208 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001209
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001210- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001211 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1212 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001213
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001214- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001217- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1218 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1219 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001220
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001221- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1222 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1223 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001224
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001225- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1226 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1227
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001228- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1229 entries each.
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +00001230
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001231- Patch #1953: Added ``sys._compact_freelists()`` and the C API

1236 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1237 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001238
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001239- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001251- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1252 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1253 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001254
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001255- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1256 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1257 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1258 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001259
Guido van Rossumeead05f2008-01-24 18:21:02 +00001260- A few crashers fixed: weakref_in_del.py (issue #1377858);

2871 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2872 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002885- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2886 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2887 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2888 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002889

2908- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2909 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2910
2911- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2912 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
