8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000013- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
14 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
15 new-style classes.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000017- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
18 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
19 another file in sys.stdout.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000021- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
22 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
23 another thread's dictionary.
24
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000025- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
26 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
27 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
28 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
29 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
30 10, -1).
31
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000032- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000033 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000034 switch to the new compiler.
35
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000036- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
37 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
38 calls them via gc.collect().
39
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000040Library
41-------
42
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +000043- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
44
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000045- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
46
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000047- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000048
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000049- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
50 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000051 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000052 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
53 merged into trunk.
54
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000055- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
56
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000057- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
58
59- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
60
61- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
62 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
63 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
64
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000065- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects

69 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
70
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000071- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
72 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
73
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000074- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
75 interrupted by a signal.
76
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000077- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +000078 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
79 Prevents a deadlock.
80
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +000081- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
82 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
83 default https port (443).
84
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +000085Tests
86-----
87
88- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
89 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
90 have been added to test_warnings.
91

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000517- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
518 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
519 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000587- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
588 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
589 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
590 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
591 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
592 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
593 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
594 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
595 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
596 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
597 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
598 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
599 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
600 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
601 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
602 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
603 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
604 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
605 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
606 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
607
608 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
609 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
610 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
611 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
612 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
613 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
614 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
615 access to the underlying socket used.
616
617 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
618 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
619 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000620
621 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000622 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000623 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
624 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
625
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000626 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
627 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000899- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
900
901- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000902
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000903- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000904 issue 215555 for a discussion.
905
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000906- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
907 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
908 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
909 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
910 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
911 module is:
912 from future_builtins import hex, oct
913
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000914- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
915 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
916 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
917 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
918 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
919 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
920
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000921- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
922 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
923 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
924 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
925 PyObject_Format().
926
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000927- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
928 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
929 state.

939 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
940 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000941
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000942- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
943 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
944 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000945
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000946- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
947 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
948

2584-----
2585
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002586- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free
2587 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
2588 and the upper limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an
2589 #ifndef block.
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002590
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002591- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly
2592 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2593 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002594
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002595- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002596

2598 and _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and
2599 PyLong_FromSsize_t public functions.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002600
2601- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2602
2603- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2604 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2605
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002606- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2607 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2608 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2609 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002610
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002611- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE,
2612 Py_TYPE and Py_REFCNT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002613
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002614- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while
2615 keeping backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size,
2616 and PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.

2619 defined.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002620
2621- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.

2628
2629- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2630 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2631
2632- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2633 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2634
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002635- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do
2636 absolute imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative
2637 imports under some conditions.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002638
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002639- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*,
2640 char*)`` and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002641

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002667- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5.
2668 This lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied
