13-----------------
14
Hirokazu Yamamoto2c66b7c2008-10-09 18:06:58 +000015- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
16 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
17 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
18
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc00c94ed2008-10-07 20:40:09 +000019- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
20 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
21 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
22 it correctly refers to the initial element.
23
Christian Heimes4d8a6f42008-10-02 19:49:47 +000024- Fixed C99 style comments in several files. Python is now C89 compatible

129Core and Builtins
130-----------------
131
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000132- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
133
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000134- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
135 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
136 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
137 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
138 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
139 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
140 64bit values.
141
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000142- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
143 error.
144
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000145- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
146 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
147 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
148 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
149
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000150- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
151 a unicode argument.
152
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000153- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
154
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000155- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000156 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000157 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
158
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000159- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000160 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
161 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
162 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
163 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
164 type object.
165
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000166- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
167
168- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
169
170- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
171
172- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
173
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000174- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
175 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
176
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000177- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
178 ``__delslice__``.
179
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000180- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
181 library targets in the Makefile.
182
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000183- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
184 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
185 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
186
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000187C-API

193-------
194
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000195- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
196 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.

201
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000202- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
203 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
204 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000304
305Core and Builtins
306-----------------
307
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000308- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
309 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
310 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
311 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
312 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
313 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
314 default.
315
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000316- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
317 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
318
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000319- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
320 value again.
321
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000322- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
323 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
324 and introducing s*.

Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000326- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
327 object was stored in the freelist.
328
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000329- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
330 ValueError consistently across platforms.
331
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000332- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
333 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
334 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
335
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000336- Apply security patches from Apple.
337
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000338- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
339 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
340
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000341- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
342 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
343
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000344- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
345 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
346 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
347
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000348- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
349 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
350 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
351 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
352 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
353 failed have been fixed.

362
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000363- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
364 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
365 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
366
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000367- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
368 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
369 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
370 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
371 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
372 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
373
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000374- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

416
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000417- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

419
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000420- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
421 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
422 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
423

468
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000469- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
470 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
471 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
472
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000473- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

498
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000499Core and Builtins
500-----------------
501
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000502- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
503 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
504 an integer using operator.index().
505
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000506- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
507 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
508
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000509- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
510 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
511
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000512- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
513 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
514 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
515
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000516- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
517 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
518 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
519 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
520 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
521 level.
522
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000523- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
524 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
525 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
526 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
527 all imports from that module to fail.
528
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000529- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
530 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
531 new-style classes.
532
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000533- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
534 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
535 another file in sys.stdout.
536
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000537- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
538 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
539 another thread's dictionary.
540
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000541- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
542 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
543 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
544 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
545 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
546 10, -1).
547
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000548- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
549 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
550 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000551
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000552- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
553 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
554 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000555

560 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
561 error when they failed.
562
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000563- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

570
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000571- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
572 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
573
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000574- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

578
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000579- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000587
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000588- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
589 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000590 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000591 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
592 merged into trunk.
593
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000594- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000604- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000605 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000606
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000607- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
608 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
609
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000610- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001062- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1063 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1064 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1065 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1066 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1067 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1068 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1069 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001132- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1133 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1134 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1135 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1136 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1137 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1138 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1139 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1140 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1141 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1142 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1143 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1144 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1145 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1146 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1147 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1148 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1149 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1150 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1151 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1152
1153 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1154 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1155 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1156 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1157 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1158 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1159 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1160 access to the underlying socket used.
1161
1162 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1163 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1164 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001165
1166 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001451- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1452 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1453 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1454 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1455 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1456 module is:
1457 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1458
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001459- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1460 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1461 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1462 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1463 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1464 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1465
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001466- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1467 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1468 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1469 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1470 PyObject_Format().
1471
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001472- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1473 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1474 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001475

1484 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1485 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001486
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001487- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1690
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +00001691- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001705- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1706 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1707 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1708 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1709 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001710 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1711 as supported by type.__new__().

1715 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1716 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1717 method.
