10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000015- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
16 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
17 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
18
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000019- Apply security patches from Apple.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000021- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
22 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
23
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000024- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
25 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000027- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
28 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
29 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
30
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000031- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
32 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
33 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
34 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
35 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
36 failed have been fixed.
37

39-------
40
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000041- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
42 asking for a specific length.
43
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000044- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
45 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
46
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000047- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
48

50 on a closed shelf.
51
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000052- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
53
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000054- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
55
56- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
57 invalid arguments.
58
59- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
60 with None arguments.
61
62- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
63 configuration files.
64
65- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
66
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000067- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
68 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
69 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.

76
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000077Core and Builtins
78-----------------
79
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000080- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
81 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
82 an integer using operator.index().
83
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000084- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
85 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
86
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000087- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
88 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
89
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000090- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
91 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
92 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
93
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000094- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
95 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
96 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
97 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
98 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
99 level.
100
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000101- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
102 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
103 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
104 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
105 all imports from that module to fail.
106
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000107- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
108 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
109 new-style classes.
110
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000111- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
112 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
113 another file in sys.stdout.
114
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000115- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
116 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
117 another thread's dictionary.
118
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000119- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
120 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
121 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
122 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
123 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
124 10, -1).
125
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000126- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
127 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
128 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000129
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000130- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
131 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
132 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000133
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000134Library
135-------
136

142
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000143- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
144 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
145
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000146- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

149 a valid dlerror() message.
150
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000151- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
152 incomplete structure was created.
153
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000154- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000160- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
161 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000162 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000163 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
164 merged into trunk.
165
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000166- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

171
172- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

180 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
181
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000182- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
183 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

190 Prevents a deadlock.
191
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000192- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
193 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
194 default https port (443).

237 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
238 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
239 bus error.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000631- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
632 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
633 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
634 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
635 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
636 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
637 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
638 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000700
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000701- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
702 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
703 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
704 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
705 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
706 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
707 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
708 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
709 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
710 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
711 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
712 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
713 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
714 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
715 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
716 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
717 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
718 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
719 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
720 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
721
722 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
723 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
724 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
725 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
726 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
727 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
728 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
729 access to the underlying socket used.
730
731 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
732 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
733 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000734
735 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000736 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000737 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
738 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
739
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000740 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
741 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1019
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001020- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1021 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1022 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1023 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1024 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1025 module is:
1026 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1027
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001028- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1029 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1030 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1031 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1032 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1033 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1034
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001035- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1036 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1037 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1038 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1039 PyObject_Format().
1040
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001041- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1042 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1043 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001044
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001045- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1053 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1054 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001055
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001056- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1071 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1072 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001073
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001074- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they
