11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000015- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
16 ValueError consistently across platforms.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000018- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
19 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
20 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
21
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000022- Apply security patches from Apple.
23
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000024- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
25 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
26
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000027- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
28 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
29
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000030- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
31 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
32 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
33
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000034- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
35 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
36 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
37 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
38 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
39 failed have been fixed.

42-------
43
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000044- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
45 the reload() built-in has been removed.
46
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000047- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
48 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
49 ConfigParser, cookielib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp, fileinput, inspect,
50 logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter,
51 SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support,
52 textwrap, threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
53
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000054- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
55 raised an AttributeError.
56
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000057- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
58 asking for a specific length.
59
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000060- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
61 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
62
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000063- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
64

66 on a closed shelf.
67
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000068- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
69
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000070- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
71
72- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
73 invalid arguments.
74
75- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
76 with None arguments.
77
78- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
79 configuration files.
80
81- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
82
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000083- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
84 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
85 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
86
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +000087- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
88 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
89 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
90
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +000091Build
92-----
93
94- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".

97-------------
98
99- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
100 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
101 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
102 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

109
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000110Core and Builtins
111-----------------
112
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000113- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
114 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
115 an integer using operator.index().
116
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000117- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
118 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
119
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000120- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
121 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
122
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000123- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
124 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
125 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
126
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000127- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
128 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
129 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
130 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
131 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
132 level.
133
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000134- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
135 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
136 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
137 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
138 all imports from that module to fail.
139
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000140- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
141 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
142 new-style classes.
143
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000144- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
145 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
146 another file in sys.stdout.
147
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000148- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
149 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
150 another thread's dictionary.
151
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000152- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
153 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
154 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
155 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
156 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
157 10, -1).
158
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000159- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
160 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
161 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000162
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000163- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
164 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
165 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000166
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000167Library
168-------

171
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000172- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
173

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000178- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
179 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
180
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000181- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000183- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
184 a valid dlerror() message.
185
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000186- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000194
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000195- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
196 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000197 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000198 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
199 merged into trunk.
200
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000201- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

206
207- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
208 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000209 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

215 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
216
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000217- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000224 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
225 Prevents a deadlock.
226

228 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
229 default https port (443).
230
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000231- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
232 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
233 if the new process uses the threading module.
234
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000235Tests
236-----

272 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
273 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
274 bus error.
275
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000276- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

667 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
668 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
669 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

671 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
672 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

734-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000735
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000736- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
737 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
738 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
739 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
740 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
741 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
742 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
743 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
744 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
745 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
746 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
747 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
748 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
749 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
750 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
751 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
752 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
753 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
754 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
755 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
756
757 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
758 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
759 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
760 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
761 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
762 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
763 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
764 access to the underlying socket used.
765
766 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
767 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
768 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000769
770 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000771 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000772 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
773 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
774
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000775 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
776 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1054
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001055- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1056 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1057 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1058 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1059 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1060 module is:
1061 from future_builtins import hex, oct

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001063- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1064 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1065 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1066 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1067 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1068 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1069
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001070- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001076- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1077 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1078 state.

1089 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001090
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001091- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
