10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000013- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
14 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
15 another file in sys.stdout.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000017- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
18 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
19 another thread's dictionary.
20
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000021- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
22 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
23 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
24 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
25 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
26 10, -1).
27
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000028- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
29 would not cause a syntax error. This was regression from 2.4 caused by the
30 switch to the new compiler.
31
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000032- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
33 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
34 calls them via gc.collect().
35
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000036Library
37-------
38
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000039- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
40 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
41 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ with the
42 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
43 merged into trunk.
44
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000045- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
46
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000047- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
48
49- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
50
51- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
52 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
53 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
54
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +000055- Issue #449227: Now with the rlcompleter module, callable objects are added
56 "(" when completed.
57
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000058- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
59 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
60
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000061- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
62 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
63
64- Issue #2885 (partial): lib2to3 has been updated to handle the renaming of the
65 urllib module in Python 3.0 to urllib.request, urllib.parse, and
66 urllib.error.
67
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000068- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
69 interrupted by a signal.
70
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +000071Build

87 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
88 bus error.
89

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000480- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
481 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
482 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
483 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

485 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
486 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000549
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000550- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
551 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
552 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
553 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
554 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
555 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
556 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
557 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
558 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
559 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
560 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
561 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
562 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
563 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
564 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
565 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
566 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
567 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
568 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
569 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
570
571 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
572 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
573 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
574 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
575 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
576 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
577 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
578 access to the underlying socket used.
579
580 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
581 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
582 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000583
584 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000585 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000860 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000861
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000862- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
863
864- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000865
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000866- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000867 issue 215555 for a discussion.
868
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000869- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
870 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
871 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
872 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
873 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
874 module is:
875 from future_builtins import hex, oct
876
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000877- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
878 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
879 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
880 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
881 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
882 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
883
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000884- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
885 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
886 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
887 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
888 PyObject_Format().
889
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000890- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
891 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
892 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000893
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000894- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000895 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
896 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000897
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000898- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
899 real or imaginary part.

902 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
903 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000904
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000905- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

920 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
921 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000922
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000923- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

940 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
941 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
942 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000943

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001123- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1124 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001128 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
