10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000013- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
14 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
15 another file in sys.stdout.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000017- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
18 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
19 another thread's dictionary.
20
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000021- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
22 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
23 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
24 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
25 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
26 10, -1).
27
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000028- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
29 would not cause a syntax error. This was regression from 2.4 caused by the
30 switch to the new compiler.
31
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000032- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
33 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
34 calls them via gc.collect().
35
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000036Library
37-------
38
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000039- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
40 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
41 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ with the
42 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
43 merged into trunk.
44
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000045- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
46

48
49- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
50
51- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
52 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
53 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
54
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +000055- Issue #449227: Now with the rlcompleter module, callable objects are added
56 "(" when completed.
57
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000058- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
59 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
60
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000061- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
62 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
63
64- Issue #2885 (partial): lib2to3 has been updated to handle the renaming of the
65 urllib module in Python 3.0 to urllib.request, urllib.parse, and
66 urllib.error.
67
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000068- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
69 interrupted by a signal.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000484- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
485 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
486 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
487 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

489 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
490 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

552-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000553
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000554- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
555 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
556 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
557 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
558 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
559 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
560 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
561 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
562 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
563 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
564 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
565 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
566 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
567 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
568 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
569 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
570 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
571 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
572 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
573 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
574
575 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
576 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
577 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
578 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
579 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
580 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
581 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
582 access to the underlying socket used.
583
584 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
585 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
586 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000587
588 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000589 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000590 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
591 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
592
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000593 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

861-----------------
862
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000863- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000864 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000865
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000866- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
867
868- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000869
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000870- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000871 issue 215555 for a discussion.
872
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000873- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
874 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
875 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
876 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
877 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
878 module is:
879 from future_builtins import hex, oct
880
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000881- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
882 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
883 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
884 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
885 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
886 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
887
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000888- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
889 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
890 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
891 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
892 PyObject_Format().
893
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000894- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
895 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
896 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000897
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000898- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000899 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
900 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000901
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000902- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
903 real or imaginary part.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000905- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
906 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
907 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000908
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000909- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
910 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
911 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000912
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000913- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
914 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
915
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000916- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

924 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
925 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000926
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000927- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

940 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
941 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000942

944 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
945 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
946 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000947

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001075 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger
1076 recursion depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static
1077 RuntimeError instance in case normalizing an exception put the
1078 recursion check value past its limit. Fixes crashers
1079 infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +00001080
