21- Issue #3850: recursion tests in Misc/find_recursion_limit.py can raise
22 AttributeError instead of RuntimeError, depending in which C API call
23 exactly the recursion limit is exceeded. Consequently, both exception types
24 are caught and silenced.

32Core and Builtins
33-----------------
34
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000035- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000037- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
38 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
39 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
40 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
41 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
42 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
43 64bit values.
44
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000045- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
46 error.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000048- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
49 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
50 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
51 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
52
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000053- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
54 a unicode argument.
55
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000056- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
57
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000058- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000059 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000060 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
61
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000062- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000063 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
64 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
65 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
66 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
67 type object.
68
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000069- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
70
71- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
72
73- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
74
75- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
76
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000077- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
78 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
79
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000080- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
81 ``__delslice__``.
82
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000083- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
84 library targets in the Makefile.
85
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000086- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
87 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
88 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
89
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000090C-API

99 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
100

104
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000105- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
106 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
107 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
108
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000109- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

139 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
140 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
141
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000142- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000203What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
204================================
205
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000206*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000207
208Core and Builtins
209-----------------
210
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000211- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
212 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
213 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
214 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
215 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
216 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
217 default.
218
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000219- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
220 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
221
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000222- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
223 value again.
224
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000225- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
226 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
227 and introducing s*.
228
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000229- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
230 object was stored in the freelist.
231
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000232- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
233 ValueError consistently across platforms.
234
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000235- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
236 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
237 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
238
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000239- Apply security patches from Apple.
240
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000241- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
242 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
243
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000244- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
245 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
246
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000247- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
248 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
249 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
250
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000251- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
252 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
253 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
254 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
255 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
256 failed have been fixed.
257
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000258Library
259-------
260
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000261- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
262
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000263- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
264 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
265
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000266- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
267 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
268 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
269
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000270- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
271 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
272 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
273 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
274 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
275 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
276
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000277- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
278 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
279
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000280- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
281
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000282- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
283
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000284- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
285
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000286- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
287 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
288
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000289- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
290 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
291
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000292- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
293 in a redirect.
294
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000295- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000296 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000297
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000298- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
299 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
300
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000301- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
302 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
303 regular expression.
304
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000305- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
306 thread-safe.
307
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000308- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
309 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
310 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
311
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000312- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

401
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000402Core and Builtins
403-----------------
404
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000405- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
406 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
407 an integer using operator.index().
408
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000409- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
410 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
411
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000412- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
413 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
414
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000415- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
416 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
417 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
418
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000419- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
420 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
421 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
422 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
423 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
424 level.
425
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000426- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
427 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
428 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
429 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
430 all imports from that module to fail.
431
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000432- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
433 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
434 new-style classes.
435
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000436- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
437 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
438 another file in sys.stdout.
439
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000440- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
441 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
442 another thread's dictionary.
443
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000444- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
445 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
446 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
447 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
448 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
449 10, -1).
450
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000451- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
452 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
453 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000454
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000455- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
456 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
457 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

463 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
464 error when they failed.
465
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000466- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

476
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000477- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000491- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
492 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000493 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000494 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
495 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000510- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the

512
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000513- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000903 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000904
905 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
906
907 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
908
909 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
910
911 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
912
913 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
914
915 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000965- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
966 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
967 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
968 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

970 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
971 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1033-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001034
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001035- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1036 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1037 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1038 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1039 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1040 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1041 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1042 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1043 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1044 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1045 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1046 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1047 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1048 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1049 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1050 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1051 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1052 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1053 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1054 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1055
1056 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1057 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1058 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1059 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1060 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1061 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1062 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1063 access to the underlying socket used.
1064
1065 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1066 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1067 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001068
1069 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001070 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001071 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1072 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1073
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001074 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1075 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001354- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1355 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001362- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1363 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1364 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1365 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1366 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1367 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1368
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001369- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1388 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001389
