8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000013- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
14 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
15 new-style classes.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000017- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
18 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
19 another file in sys.stdout.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000021- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
22 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
23 another thread's dictionary.
24
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000025- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
26 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
27 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
28 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
29 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
30 10, -1).
31
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000032- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000033 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000034 switch to the new compiler.
35
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000036- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
37 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
38 calls them via gc.collect().
39
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000040Library

44
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000045- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
46
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000047- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000048
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000049- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
50 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000051 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000052 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
53 merged into trunk.
54
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000055- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
56

58
59- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
60
61- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
62 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
63 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
64
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000065- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
66 when completed.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000068- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
69 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
70
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000071- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
72 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
73
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000074- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
75 interrupted by a signal.
76
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000077- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock

82 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
83 default https port (443).
84
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +000085Build

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000509- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
510 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
511 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

584 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
585 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
586 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
587 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
588 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
589 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
590 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
591 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
592 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
593 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
594 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
595 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
596 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
597 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
598 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
599
600 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
601 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
602 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
603 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
604 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
605 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
606 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
607 access to the underlying socket used.
608
609 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
610 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
611 connect).

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000891- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
892
893- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000894
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000895- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see

897
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000898- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
899 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
900 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
901 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
902 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
903 module is:
904 from future_builtins import hex, oct
905
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000906- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
907 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
908 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
909 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
910 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
911 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
912
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000913- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
914 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
915 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
916 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
917 PyObject_Format().
918
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000919- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
920 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
921 state.

2576-----
2577
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002578- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free
2579 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
2580 and the upper limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an
2581 #ifndef block.
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002582
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002583- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly
2584 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2585 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002586
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002587- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002588
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002589- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format
2590 and _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and
2591 PyLong_FromSsize_t public functions.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002592
2593- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2594
2595- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2596 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2597
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002598- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2599 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2600 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2601 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002602
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002603- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE,
2604 Py_TYPE and Py_REFCNT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002605
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002606- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while
2607 keeping backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size,
2608 and PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002609
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002610- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not
2611 defined.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002612
2613- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2614
2615- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2616
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002617- Added a new API function ``PyImport_ImportModuleNoBlock``.
2618
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002619- Bug #1637022: Prefix AST symbols with _Py_.
2620
2621- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2622 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2623
2624- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2625 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2626
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002627- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do
2628 absolute imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative
2629 imports under some conditions.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002630
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002631- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*,
2632 char*)`` and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002633
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002634- Bug #1542693: remove semi-colon at end of PyImport_ImportModuleEx

2642 requires Windows 2000 or greater. The _WINVER and NTDDI_VERSION
2643 macros are set to Win2k for x86/32bit builds and WinXP for AMD64
2644 builds.
Christian Heimes95d64472008-02-09 19:55:22 +00002645

2658
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002659- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5.
2660 This lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied
2661 solely on macfs and was a no-op under OS X.
