Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000275
276Core and builtins
277-----------------
278
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +0000279- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.

281- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
282
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000283- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000284 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
285 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000286
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000287 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
288 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
289 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
290 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
291 exception, logged, etc.
292
293 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
294 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000295
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000296- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

299 with new-style classes.
300
301- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
302 classic classes.
303
304- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
305 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
306 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
307 to effectively use __index__.
308
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000309- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
310 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
311
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000312- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000314- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
315 sys.stdin is closed.
316
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000317- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
318 the Python dll again.
319
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000320- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
321 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
322 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1

445Core and builtins
446-----------------
447
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000448- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000449 returned a long (see PEP 353).
450
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000451- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
452
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000453- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
454 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
455 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
456
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000457- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
458 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
459
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000460- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
461 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
462 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
463 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
464
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000465- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
466 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
467 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
468 the code to make that compiler happy again.
469
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000470- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

481
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000482- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
483 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
484
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000485- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000486 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000487 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000489- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000490 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000491 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

501 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
502
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000503- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

508
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000509- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
510 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
511
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000512- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000513 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000514 #1513611, and probably others.
515
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000516- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
517 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
518
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000519- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
520 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
521 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
522 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
523 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
524
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000525- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

529
Georg Brandldb232dc2006-08-20 13:15:43 +0000530- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with

Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000532
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000533- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
534 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
535
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000536- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
537
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000538- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
539 value in the traceback module.
540
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000541- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
542
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000543- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
544
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000545- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
546 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
547 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
548 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
549 tuple pre-2.4.
550
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000551- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
552
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000553- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
554 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
555 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
556 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
557 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
558 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
559 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
560 charset and language parts).
561
562 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
563 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
564
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000565- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
566
567- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
568 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
569
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000570- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
571 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
572 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
573 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

581 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
582
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000583- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

585
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000586- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

588
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000589- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000594- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing

596 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
597
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000598- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

618- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of

621
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000622- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
623 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
624 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

638 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home

653
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000654- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000667- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
668
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000669- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
670 now ints rather than longs.
671
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000672- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
673 started after line 256.
674
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000675- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
676 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
677 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
678 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
679 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
680 an extension.

700 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
701
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000702- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

727
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000728- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
729 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
730 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
731
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000732- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

739
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000740- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first

742 now.
743
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000744Extension Modules
745-----------------
746
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000747- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
748 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
749 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000750
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000751- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
752 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
753
754- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
755 on non-Windows platforms.
756
757- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
758 integer or long, without range checking.
759
760- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
761 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
762 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
763
764- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
765 with the --without-threads option.
766
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000767- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
768 access, again.

782
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000783- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000784 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
785 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
786
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000787- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
788 with spaces in it.
789
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000790- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent

Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000821- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
822 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
823 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
824
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000825- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
826 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
827
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000828- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
829
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000830- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000831 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000832
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000833- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
834 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
835 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
836 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
837 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
838
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000839- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
840 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
841
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000842- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
843 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
844 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
845 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
846 requested.
847
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000848- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
849 away like they were in Python 2.4.
850
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000851- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
852 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
853 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
854
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000855- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
856 Unicode 4.1.
857
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000858- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
859 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
860 fewer open calls on startup.
861
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000862- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
863 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
864 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
865 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
866 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
867
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000868- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
869 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
870 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
871 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
872
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000873- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
874
875- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
876 "base" parameter.
877
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000878- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
879 objects.
880
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000881- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
882 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
883 C library function.
884
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000885- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
886
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000887- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
888
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000889- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
890 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
891 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
892 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
893
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000894- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
895
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000896- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
897
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000898- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
899 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
900 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
901 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
902
903- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
904 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
905 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
906 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

913- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
914
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000915- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
916 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
917
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +0000918- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
919
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000920- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
921 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
922 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are

963 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
964
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000965- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1005 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1006 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1007 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1008 of the matching pair.

1028 for lookup.
1029
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001030- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1031 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1032 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1033 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1034 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1108
1109*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1110
1111Core and builtins
1112-----------------
1113
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001114- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1115 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1116
1117 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1118 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1119 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1120 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1121 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1122
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001123- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1124
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001125- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1126 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1127 multiple times.
1128
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001129- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1130 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1131 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1132
1133- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1134 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1135
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001136- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1137 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1138 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001139 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001140 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001141
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001142 def __hash__(self):
1143 return id(self) # WRONG
1144
1145 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1146 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001147 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001148 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1149 necessarily so.
1150
1151- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001152 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001153 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001154 #1454844)
1155
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001156- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1157 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1158 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1159 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1160 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001161
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001162Extension Modules

1166 is a macro.
1167
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001168- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1169 fails with an error condition.
1170
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001171- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1172
1173- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1174 the cachesize parameter.
1175
1176- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1177 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1178
1179- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1180 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001181
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001182- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1183 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1186-------
1187
Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +00001188- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
1189 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1190 abusing errno.
1191
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001192- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1193 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1194 or exception is ignored).
1195
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001196- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1197 caught inside exit handlers.
1198
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001199- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1200 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1201 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1202 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1203
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001204- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1205 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1206
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001207- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1208 .zip or .egg files.
1209
1210- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1211 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1212 in the filesystem or zip files.
1213
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001214- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1215 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1216 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1217 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001218
Tim Petersc7605f22006-04-17 21:12:33 +00001219- The ``__del__`` method of class ``local`` in module ``_threading_local``
1220 returned before accomplishing any of its intended cleanup.
1221
Martin v. Löwisbd30f522006-04-17 17:08:37 +00001222- Patch #790710: Add breakpoint command lists in pdb.

Anthony Baxtere29002c2006-04-12 12:07:31 +00001228- SimpleXMLRPCServer relied on the fcntl module, which is unavailable on
1229 Windows. Bug #1469163.

Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00001274- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
1275
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001276- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1277 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1278 the current Decimal context.
1279
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001280- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1281 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1282 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1283 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1310-----------------
1311
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001312- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1313 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1314
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001315- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1316 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1317 end in .PYD.
1318
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001319- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1320 sys.stdout.encoding.
1321
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001322- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1323
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001324- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1325
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001326- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1327
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001328- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1329 5.4 and later versions.
1330
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001331- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1332 now gives a SyntaxError.
1333
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001334- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1335 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1336 (closes patch #1170323).
1337
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001338- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1339 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1340 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1341 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1342 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1343 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1344 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001345 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1346 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001347 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1348 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1349
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001350- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1351 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1352 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1353
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001354- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1355 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1356 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1357 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1358
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001359- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1360
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001361- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1362 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1363 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1364 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1365
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001366- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1367 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1368 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1369 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1370 absolute_import' is used.
1371
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001372- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1373 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1374 exceptions.
1375
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001376- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001377 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1378
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001379- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001380
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001381- Patch 1433928:
1382 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1383 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1384 KeyError.
1385
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001386- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1387 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1388 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001389 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001390 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1391 - The built-in file type.
1392 - The thread.LockType type.
1393 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1394 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1395 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001396
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001397- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1398 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1399
1400 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1401 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1402
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001403- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1404
1405- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1406 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1407 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1408 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1409 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001410
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001411- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1412 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1413 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1414
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001415- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1416 configure would break checking curses.h.
1417
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001418- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1419 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1420
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001421- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1422
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001423- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1424
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001425- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1426
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001427- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1428 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1429
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001430- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001432 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1433
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001434- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1435 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001436 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

1439 now encodes backslash correctly.
1440
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001441- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1442
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001443- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001444 and long longs.
1445
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001446- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001447 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001448 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001449
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001450- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1451 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1452 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1453 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1454 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1455
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001456- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001457

1475
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001476- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001477 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1478 was empty.
1479
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001480- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1481 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1482
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001483- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001501- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1502 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1503
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001504- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1505 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1506 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1507
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001508- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1509
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001510- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1511 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1512
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001513- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1514 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1515 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001516 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001517 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1518 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1519 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1520 realloc.
1521
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001522- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1524
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001525- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1526 like their int counterparts.
1527
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001528- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1529 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1530 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1531 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1532 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1533
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001534- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1535 serializing floats.
1536
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001537- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1538 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1539 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1540
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001541- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1542 278.
1543
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001544- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1545 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1546 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1547 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001548 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001549 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001550 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001551
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001552- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1553 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1554 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1555 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1556
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001557- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1558 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1559 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1560 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1561 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1562
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001563- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1564 disabled caused a crash.
1565
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001566- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1567 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1568
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001569- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001574- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001575 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1576 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1577 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001578

1591
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001592- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001593 an ferror() call.
1594
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001595- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001606- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1607 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1608 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1609
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001610- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a

1612 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1613
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001614- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1615 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1616 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1617 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1618 the same thread id).

1858 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1859 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1860 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1861 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1862 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1863 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2079 work as expected.
2080
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002081- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2137
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002138- Enhancements to the csv module:
2139
2140 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002141 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002142 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002143 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2144 reporting.
2145 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2146 dictates.
2147 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002148 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002149 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002150 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2151 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002152 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2153 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002154 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002155 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2156 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2157 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2158 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2159 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2160 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2161 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2162 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2163 without first creating a dialect class.
2164 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2165 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2166 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002167 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002168 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2169 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002170 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2171 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2172 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2173 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002174 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2175 This has been fixed.
2176
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002177- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2178 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2179 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2180 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2181
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002182- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2183

2185 (Bug #951915).
2186
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002187- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2188 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2189 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002190 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002191
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002192- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2193
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002194- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2195 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2196
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002197- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2198

2204
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002205- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2206
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002207- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2208 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2209 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2210
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002211- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002212 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002213
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002214- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2215 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2216 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2217
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002218- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2219 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2220 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002221
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002222- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

2229 correctly.
2230
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002231- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2232 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2233 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2234 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2235 between two lines.
2236
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002237- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2238 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2239 handlers.
2240
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002241- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002242 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2243 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002244
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002245- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

2255
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002256- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2257 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002258 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2259 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2260 special classes that use unicode.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002292- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2293 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2294 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2295
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002296- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2297
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002298- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2299 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2300
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002301- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2302 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2303 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2304 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2305 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2306 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2307 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2308 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2309
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002310- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2311 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2312 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2313 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2316-----
2317
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002318- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2319 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2320 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2321 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2322 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2323 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2324 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2325 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2326 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2327 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2328
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002329- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2330

2332
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002333- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2334 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2335 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2336 mappings.
