19 to str, bytes and bytearray could be optimized away by the compiler, letting
20 the interpreter segfault instead of raising an error.
21

25 an existing .py counterpart, override the co_filename attributes of all
26 code objects if the original filename is obsolete (which can happen if the
27 file has been renamed, moved, or if it is accessed through different paths).
28 Patch by Ziga Seilnacht and Jean-Paul Calderone.
29
Georg Brandl734373c2009-01-03 21:55:17 +000030- Issue #4075: Use OutputDebugStringW in Py_FatalError.

36 did not get collected.

39 where the tp_hash and tp_dict slots are both NULL.
40
Georg Brandl47fe9812009-01-01 15:46:10 +000041- Issue #4764: With io.open, IOError.filename is set when trying to open a
42 directory on POSIX systems.
43
44- Issue #4764: IOError.filename is set when trying to open a directory on POSIX
45 systems.
46
47- Issue #4759: None is now allowed as the first argument of
48 bytearray.translate(). It was always allowed for bytes.translate().
49

51
Skip Montanaro6a00c742008-12-23 03:35:04 +000052- Added test case to ensure attempts to read from a file opened for writing
53 fail.
54

56 exceptions.
57
Benjamin Petersonc6e80eb2008-12-21 17:01:26 +000058- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always
59 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /
60 unreachable. Original patch by Neil Schemenauer.
61
Jeffrey Yasskin69614982008-12-11 05:21:18 +000062- Issue #4589: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc79c9f762008-12-10 23:56:33 +000063 context manager returns a value that cannot be converted to a bool.
64
Vinay Sajip6badbe92009-01-20 22:49:13 +000065- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Georg Brandld2094602008-12-05 08:51:30 +000066 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
67 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``

69
Georg Brandlfa71a902008-12-05 09:08:28 +000070- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__

83 allow adding directories to a zipfile.
84
Antoine Pitrou19fec8b2009-01-21 00:56:37 +000085- Issue #5008: When a file is opened in append mode with the new IO library,
86 do an explicit seek to the end of file (so that e.g. tell() returns the
87 file size rather than 0). This is consistent with the behaviour of the
88 traditional 2.x file object.
89
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0293c802009-01-17 16:46:35 +000090- Issue #3997: zipfiles generated with more than 65536 files could not be

121
122- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
123 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
124 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
125 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
126 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
127 Alexander Belopolsky.

443 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
444 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
445 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent

613Core and Builtins
614-----------------
615
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000616- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
617 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
618 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
619 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
620 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
621 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
622 default.
623
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000624- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,

626
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000627- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True

636
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000637- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
638 ValueError consistently across platforms.
639
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000640- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
641 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
642 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.

648
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000649- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on

651
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000652- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
653 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
654 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
655
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000656- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
657 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
658 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
659 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
660 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
661 failed have been fixed.

670
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000671- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
672 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
673 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
674
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000675- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
676 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
677 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
678 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
679 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

806
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000807Core and Builtins
808-----------------
809
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000810- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
811 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
812 an integer using operator.index().
813
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000814- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
815 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
816
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000817- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
818 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
819
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000820- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
821 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
822 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
823
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000824- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
825 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
826 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
827 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
828 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
829 level.
830
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000831- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
832 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
833 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
834 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
835 all imports from that module to fail.
836
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000837- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
838 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
839 new-style classes.
840
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000841- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
842 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
843 another file in sys.stdout.
844
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000845- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
846 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
847 another thread's dictionary.
848
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000849- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
850 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
851 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
852 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
853 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
854 10, -1).
855
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000856- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
857 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
858 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000859
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000860- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
861 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
862 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

869 error when they failed.
870
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000871- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000896- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
897 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000898 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000899 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
900 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000915- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the

917
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000918- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001370- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1371 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1372 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1373 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1374 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1375 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1376 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1377 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001440- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1441 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1442 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1443 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1444 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1445 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1446 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1447 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1448 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1449 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1450 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1451 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1452 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1453 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1454 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1455 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1456 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1457 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1458 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1459 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1460
1461 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1462 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1463 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1464 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1465 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1466 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1467 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1468 access to the underlying socket used.
1469
1470 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1471 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1472 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001473
1474 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1747-----------------
1748
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001749- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001750 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001751
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001752- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1753
1754- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001755
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001756- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001757 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1758
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001759- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1760 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1761 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1762 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1763 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1764 module is:
1765 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1766
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001767- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1768 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1769 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1770 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1771 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1772 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1773
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001774- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1775 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1776 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1777 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1778 PyObject_Format().
1779
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001780- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1781 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1782 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001783
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001784- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001785 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1786 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001787
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001788- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001791- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1792 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1793 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001794
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001795- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1796 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1797 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001798
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001799- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1800 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1801
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001802- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1803 entries each.

1810 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1811 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001812

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001825- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1826 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1827 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001828

1830 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1831 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1832 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001833
