8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000051- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
52 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
53 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
54
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000055C-API

Hirokazu Yamamoto42e459e2008-09-04 14:25:30 +000069- Issue #3762: platform.architecture() fails if python is lanched via
70 its symbolic link.
71

87 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
88 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
89 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
90
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000091- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

139
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000140*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000141
142Core and Builtins
143-----------------
144
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000145- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
146 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
147 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
148 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
149 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
150 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
151 default.
152
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000153- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
154 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
155
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000156- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
157 value again.
158
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000159- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
160 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
161 and introducing s*.
162
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000163- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
164 object was stored in the freelist.
165
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000166- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
167 ValueError consistently across platforms.
168
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000169- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
170 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
171 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
172
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000173- Apply security patches from Apple.
174
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000175- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
176 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
177
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000178- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
179 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
180
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000181- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
182 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
183 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
184
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000185- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
186 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
187 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
188 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
189 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
190 failed have been fixed.
191
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000192Library
193-------
194
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000195- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
196
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000197- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
198 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
199
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000200- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
201 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
202 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
203
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000204- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
205 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
206 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
207 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
208 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
209 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
210
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000211- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
212 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
213
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000214- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
215
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000216- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
217
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000218- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
219
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000220- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
221 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
222
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000223- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
224 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
225
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000226- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
227 in a redirect.
228
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000229- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000230 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000231
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000232- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
233 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
234
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000235- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
236 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
237 regular expression.
238
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000239- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
240 thread-safe.
241
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000242- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
243 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
244 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
245
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000246- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
247
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000248- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
249 menu entries were not deleted.
250
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000251- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
252 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
253
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000254- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
255 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
256
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000257- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
258 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
259 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
260
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000261- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
262 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
263 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
264
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000265- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
266 the reload() built-in has been removed.
267
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000268- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000269 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000270 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

274 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000275
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000276- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
277 raised an AttributeError.

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000280 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
281 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000282

338
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000339- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
340 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
341 an integer using operator.index().
342
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000343- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
344 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
345
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000346- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
347 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
348
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000349- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
350 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
351 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
352
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000353- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
354 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
355 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
356 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
357 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
358 level.
359
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000360- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
361 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
362 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
363 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
364 all imports from that module to fail.
365
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000366- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
367 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on

376 another thread's dictionary.
377
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000378- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
379 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
380 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
381 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
382 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
383 10, -1).
384
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000385- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

426 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000427 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000428 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000899- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
900 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
901 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
902 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
903 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
904 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
905 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
906 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000969- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
970 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
971 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
972 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
973 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
974 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
975 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
976 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
977 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
978 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
979 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
980 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
981 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
982 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
983 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
984 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
985 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
986 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
987 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
988 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
989
990 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
991 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
992 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
993 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
994 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
995 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
996 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
997 access to the underlying socket used.
998
999 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1000 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1001 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001002
1003 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001004 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1009 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001284
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001285- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001286 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1287
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001288- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1289 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1290 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1291 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1292 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1293 module is:
1294 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1295
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001296- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1297 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1298 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1299 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1300 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1301 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1302
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001303- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1304 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1305 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1306 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1307 PyObject_Format().
1308
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001309- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1310 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1311 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001312
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001313- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001314 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access

1321 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1322 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001323
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001324- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1325 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1326 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001327
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001328- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1329 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1330

1339 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1340 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001341
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001342- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001354- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1355 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1356 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001357
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001358- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1359 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1360 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1361 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Gregory P. Smithec10a4a2007-11-05 02:32:26 +00002627- pybsddb.sf.net Bug #477182: Load the database flags at database open
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002628 time so that opening a database previously created with the DB_DUP
2629 or DB_DUPSORT flag set will keep the proper behavior on subsequent
