320
321- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
322
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000323- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000324 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
325 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000326
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000327 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
328 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
329 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
330 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
331 exception, logged, etc.
332
333 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
334 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000335
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000336- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
337
338- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
339 with new-style classes.
340
341- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
342 classic classes.
343
344- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
345 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
346 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
347 to effectively use __index__.
348
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000349- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
350 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
351
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000352- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
353
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000354- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
355 sys.stdin is closed.
356
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000357- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
358 the Python dll again.
359
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000360- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
361 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
362 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
363 will be regenerated.
364
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000365- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
366 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
367 immediately popped off the stack.
368
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000369- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

377
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000378- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
379 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
380 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
381 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
382
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000383- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000384 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is

485Core and builtins
486-----------------
487
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000488- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000489 returned a long (see PEP 353).
490
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000491- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
492
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000493- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
494 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
495 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
496
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000497- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
498 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
499
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000500- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
501 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
502 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
503 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
504
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000505- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
506 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
507 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
508 the code to make that compiler happy again.
509
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000510- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

521
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000522- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
523 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
524
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000525- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000526 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000527 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000529- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000530 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the

542
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000543- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

548
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000549- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
550 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
551
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000552- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000553 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

557 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
558
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000559- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
560 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
561 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
562 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
563 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
564
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000565- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

582
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000583- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
584
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000585- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
586 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
587 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
588 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
589 tuple pre-2.4.
590
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000591- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
592
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000593- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
594 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
595 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
596 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
597 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
598 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
599 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
600 charset and language parts).
601
602 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
603 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
604
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000605- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
606
607- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
608 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
609
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000610- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
611 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
612 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting

636 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
637
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000638- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000639 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000640 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
641
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000642- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

656-----
657
658- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
659 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
660 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
661
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000662- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
663 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when

692 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
693
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000694- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
695 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000707- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
708
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000709- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
710 now ints rather than longs.
711
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000712- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
713 started after line 256.
714
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000715- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
716 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
717 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
718 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
719 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
720 an extension.

737
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000738- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
739 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
740 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
741
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000742- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

767
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000768- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
769 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
770 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
771
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000772- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

779
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000780- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
781 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
782 now.
783
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000784Extension Modules
785-----------------
786
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000787- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
788 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
789 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000790
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000791- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
792 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
793
794- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
795 on non-Windows platforms.
796
797- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
798 integer or long, without range checking.
799
800- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
801 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
802 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
803
804- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
805 with the --without-threads option.
806
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000807- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
808 access, again.
809

822
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000823- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000824 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
825 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
826
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000827- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
828 with spaces in it.
829
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000830- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
831 of Tcl/Tk.
832
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000833- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

859-----------------
860
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000861- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
862 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
863 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
864
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000865- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
866 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
867
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000868- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
869
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000870- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000871 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000872
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000873- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
874 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
875 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
876 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
877 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
878
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000879- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
880 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
881
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000882- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
883 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
884 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
885 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
886 requested.
887
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000888- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
889 away like they were in Python 2.4.
890
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000891- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
892 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
893 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
894
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000895- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
896 Unicode 4.1.
897
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000898- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
899 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
900 fewer open calls on startup.
901
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000902- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
903 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
904 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
905 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
906 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
907
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000908- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
909 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
910 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
911 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
912
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000913- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
914
915- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
916 "base" parameter.
917
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000918- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
919 objects.
920
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000921- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
922 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
923 C library function.
924

928
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000929- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
930 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
931 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
932 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
933

937
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000938- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
939 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
940 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
941 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
942
943- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
944 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
945 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
946 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

977
978- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
979 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
980
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000981- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

1004
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001005- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1043
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001044- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1045 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1046 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1047 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1048 of the matching pair.

1065 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001066
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001067- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1068 for lookup.
1069
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001070- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1071 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1072 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1073 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1074 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1152-----------------
1153
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001154- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1155 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1156
1157 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1158 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1159 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1161 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1162
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001163- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1164
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001165- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1166 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1167 multiple times.
1168
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001169- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1170 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1171 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1172
1173- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1174 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1175
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001176- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1177 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1178 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001179 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001180 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001181
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001182 def __hash__(self):
1183 return id(self) # WRONG
1184
1185 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1186 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001187 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001188 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1189 necessarily so.
1190
1191- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001192 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001193 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001194 #1454844)
1195
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001196- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1197 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1198 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1199 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1200 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001201

1207
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001208- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1209 fails with an error condition.
1210
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001211- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1212
1213- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1214 the cachesize parameter.
1215
1216- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1217 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1218
1219- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1220 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001221
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001222- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1230 abusing errno.
1231
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001232- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1233 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1234 or exception is ignored).
1235

1246
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001247- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1248 .zip or .egg files.
1249

1251 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1252 in the filesystem or zip files.
1253
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001254- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1315
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001316- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1317 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1318 the current Decimal context.
1319
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001320- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1321 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1322 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1323 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001349Core and builtins
1350-----------------
1351
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001352- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1353 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1354
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001355- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1356 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1357 end in .PYD.
1358
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001359- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1360 sys.stdout.encoding.
1361
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001362- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1363
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001364- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1365
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001366- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1367
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001368- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1369 5.4 and later versions.
1370
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001371- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1372 now gives a SyntaxError.
1373
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001374- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1375 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1376 (closes patch #1170323).
1377
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001378- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1379 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1380 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1381 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1382 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1383 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1384 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001385 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1386 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001387 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1388 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1389
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001390- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1391 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1392 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1393
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001394- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1395 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1396 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1397 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1398
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001399- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1400
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001401- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1402 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1403 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1404 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1405
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001406- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1407 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1408 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1409 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1410 absolute_import' is used.
1411
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001412- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1413 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1414 exceptions.
1415
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001416- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001417 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1418
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001419- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001420
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001421- Patch 1433928:
1422 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1423 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1424 KeyError.
1425
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001426- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1427 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1428 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001429 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001430 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1431 - The built-in file type.
1432 - The thread.LockType type.
1433 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1434 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1435 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001436
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001437- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1438 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1439
1440 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1441 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1442
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001443- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1444
1445- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1446 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1447 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1448 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1449 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001450
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001451- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1452 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1453 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1454
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001455- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1456 configure would break checking curses.h.
1457
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001458- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1459 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1460
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001461- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1462
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001463- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1464
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001465- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1466
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001467- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1468 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1469
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001470- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001472 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1473
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001474- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1475 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001476 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001477
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001478- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1479 now encodes backslash correctly.
1480

1482
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001483- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001484 and long longs.
1485
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001486- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001487 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001488 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001489
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001490- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1491 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1492 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1493 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1494 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1495
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001496- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1515
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001516- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001517 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1518 was empty.
1519
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001520- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1521 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1522
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001523- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1540
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001541- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1542 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1543
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001544- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1545 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1546 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1547
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001548- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1549
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001550- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1551 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1552
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001553- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1554 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1555 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001556 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001557 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1558 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1559 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1560 realloc.
1561
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001562- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1564
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001565- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1566 like their int counterparts.
1567
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001568- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1569 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1570 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1571 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1572 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1573
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001574- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1575 serializing floats.
1576
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001577- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1578 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1579 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1580
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001581- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1582 278.
1583
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001584- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1585 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1586 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1587 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001588 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001589 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001590 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001591
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001592- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1593 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1594 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1595 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1596
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001597- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1598 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1599 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1600 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1601 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1602
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001603- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1604 disabled caused a crash.
1605
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001606- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1607 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1608
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001609- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1613
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001614- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001615 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1616 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1617 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1631
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001632- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001633 an ferror() call.
1634
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001635- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1648 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1649
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001650- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1651 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1652 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1653
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001654- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1655 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1656 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1657 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1658 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001869 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001870 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001871 module will not be built.

1898 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1899 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1900 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1901 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1902 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1903 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2177
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002178- Enhancements to the csv module:
2179
2180 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002181 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002182 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002183 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2184 reporting.
2185 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2186 dictates.
2187 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002188 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002189 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002190 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2191 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002192 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2193 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002194 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002195 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2196 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2197 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2198 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2199 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2200 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2201 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2202 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2203 without first creating a dialect class.
2204 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2205 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2206 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002207 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002208 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2209 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002210 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2211 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2212 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2213 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002214 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2215 This has been fixed.
2216
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002217- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2218 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2219 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2220 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2221
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002222- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2223

2225 (Bug #951915).
2226
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002227- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2228 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2229 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002230 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002231
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002232- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2233
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002234- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2235 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2236
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002237- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2244
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002245- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2246
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002247- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2248 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2249 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2250
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002251- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002252 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002253
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002254- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2255 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2256 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2257
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002258- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2259 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2260 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002261
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002262- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2263 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002264
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002265- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2266 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2267
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002268- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2269 correctly.
2270
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002271- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2272 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2273 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2274 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2275 between two lines.
2276
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002277- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2278 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2279 handlers.
2280
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002281- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002282 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2283 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002284
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002285- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002291- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2292
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002293- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2294 touch the recursion limit.
2295
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002296- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2297 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002298 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2299 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2300 special classes that use unicode.

2326
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002327- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2328 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2329 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002330 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002332- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2333 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2334 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2335
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002336- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2337
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002338- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2339 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2340
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002341- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2342 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2343 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2344 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2345 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2346 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2347 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2348 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2349
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002350- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2351 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2352 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2353 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2356-----
2357
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002358- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2359 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2360 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2361 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2362 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2363 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2364 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2365 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2366 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2367 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2368
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002369- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2370
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002371- Removed PyRange_New().
2372
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002373- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2374 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2375 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2376 mappings.
