8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000048Library
49-------
50
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000051- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
52 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
53
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000054- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
55 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
56
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000057- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
58 in a redirect.
59
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000060- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000061 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000062
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000063- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
64 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
65
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000066- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
67 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
68 regular expression.
69
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000070- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
71 thread-safe.
72
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000073- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
74 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
75 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
76
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000077- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
78
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000079- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
80 menu entries were not deleted.
81
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000082- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
83 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
84
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000085- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
86 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
87
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000088- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
89 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
90 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
91
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000092- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
93 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
94 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
95
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000096- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
97 the reload() built-in has been removed.
98
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000099- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000100 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000101 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
102 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
103 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
104 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
105 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000106
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000107- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
108 raised an AttributeError.
109
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000110- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000111 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
112 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000113
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000114- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
115 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
116
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000117- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
118

132- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
133 configuration files.
134
135- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
136
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000137- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
138 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
139 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
140
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000141- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
142 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
143 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
144
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000145Build

149
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000150Documentation
151-------------
152
153- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
154 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
155 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
156 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000162*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
163
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000164Core and Builtins
165-----------------
166
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000167- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
168 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
169 an integer using operator.index().
170
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000171- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
172 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
173
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000174- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
175 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
176
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000177- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
178 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
179 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
180
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000181- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
182 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
183 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
184 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
185 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
186 level.
187
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000188- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
189 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
190 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
191 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
192 all imports from that module to fail.
193
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000194- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
195 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
196 new-style classes.
197
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000198- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
199 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
200 another file in sys.stdout.
201
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000202- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
203 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
204 another thread's dictionary.
205
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000206- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
207 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
208 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
209 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
210 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
211 10, -1).
212
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000213- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
214 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
215 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000216
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000217- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
218 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
219 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000220
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000221Library
222-------
223
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000224- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
225 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
226 error when they failed.
227
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000228- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
229
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000230- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
231
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000232- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
233
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +0000234- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
235
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000236- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
237 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
238
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000239- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000240
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000241- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
242 a valid dlerror() message.
243
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000244- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
245 incomplete structure was created.
246
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000247- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
248
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000249- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
250
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000251- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000252
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000253- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
254 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000255 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000256 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
257 merged into trunk.
258
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000259- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
260

263- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
264
265- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
266 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000267 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000268
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000269- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000270 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000271
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000272- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
273 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
274
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000275- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
276 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

279 interrupted by a signal.
280
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000281- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000282 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
283 Prevents a deadlock.
284
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000285- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
286 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
287 default https port (443).
288
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000289- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
290 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
291 if the new process uses the threading module.
292
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000293Tests
294-----
295
296- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
297 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
298 have been added to test_warnings.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000724- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
725 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
726 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
727 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

729 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
730 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000794- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
795 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
796 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
797 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
798 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
799 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
800 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
801 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
802 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
803 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
804 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
805 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
806 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
807 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
808 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
809 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
810 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
811 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
812 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
813 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
814
815 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
816 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
817 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
818 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
819 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
820 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
821 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
822 access to the underlying socket used.
823
824 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
825 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
826 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000827
828 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000829 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000830 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
831 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
832
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000833 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
834 suite to run in parallel without issue.

891 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
892 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
893 codec.

1112
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001113- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1114 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1115 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1116 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1117 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1118 module is:
1119 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1120
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001121- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1122 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1123 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1124 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1125 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1126 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1127
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001128- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1129 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1130 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1131 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1132 PyObject_Format().
1133
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001134- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1135 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1136 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001137
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001138- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001139 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1140 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001141

1368 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1369 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
