30 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
31
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000032- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
33 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
34 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
35 possible.
36
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000037Library
38-------
39
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000040- getpass.getpass() now works when sys.stdin is not a tty by printing a warning
41 and falling back to sys.stdin.readline instead of raising termios.error.
42
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000043- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before
44 1900-01-01.
45
Nick Coghlan106fc482008-04-15 10:25:31 +000046- Issue #2439: Added new function pkgutil.get_data(), which is a
47 convenience wrapper for the PEP 302 get_data() API.
48
Thomas Heller046e6a42008-04-14 16:10:07 +000049- Issue #2616: The ctypes.pointer() and ctypes.POINTER() functions are
50 now implemented in C for better performance.
51

53 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
54 python code.
55
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000056- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
57 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
58 build documentation for more information.
59
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000060- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
61 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
62 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
63 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
64
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000065- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
66 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
67 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
68
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000069- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
70 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
71 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
72
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000073Tests
74-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000075- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
76 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
77 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
78 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
79 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
80 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
81 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
82 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
83 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
84 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
85 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
86 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
87 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
88 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
89 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
90 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
91 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
92 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
93
94 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
95 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
96 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
97 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
98 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
99 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
100 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
101
102 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
103 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
104
105 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
106 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
107 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
108 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
109
110 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
111 run in parallel without issue.

117 gcc is used as compiler.
118
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000119C API
120-----
121

123 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
124 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
125 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

355-----------------
356
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000357- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000358 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000359
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000360- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
361
362- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000363
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000364- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000365 issue 215555 for a discussion.
366
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000367- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
368 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
369 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
370 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
371 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
372 module is:
373 from future_builtins import hex, oct
374
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000375- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
376 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
377 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
378 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
379 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
380 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
381
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000382- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
383 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
384 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
385 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
386 PyObject_Format().
387
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000388- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
389 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
390
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000391- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

396 imaginary part.
397
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000398- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000399 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
400 OS earlier.
401

404
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000405- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
406 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
407
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000408- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

560 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
561 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
562 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
563 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

594 inherited from a builtin base.
595
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000596- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000610- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
611 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
612 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
613 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
614 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000615 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
616 as supported by type.__new__().
