10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32
33- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50

52-----
53
54- Aliased PyObject_Bytes to PyObject_Str.
55
Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000056Library
57-------
58
Hirokazu Yamamoto42e459e2008-09-04 14:25:30 +000059- Issue #3762: platform.architecture() fails if python is lanched via
60 its symbolic link.
61

63
Facundo Batistac585df92008-09-03 22:35:50 +000064- Issue 600362: Relocated parse_qs() and parse_qsl(), from the cgi module
65 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
66 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
67
Marc-André Lemburgb339b2a2008-09-03 11:13:56 +000068- Issue #2562: Fix distutils PKG-INFO writing logic to allow having
69 non-ascii characters and Unicode in setup.py meta-data.
70
71- Issue #3726: Allow spaces in separators in logging configuration files.
Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000072

116
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000117*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000118
119Core and Builtins
120-----------------
121
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000122- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
123 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
124 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
125 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
126 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
127 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
128 default.
129
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000130- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
131 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
132
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000133- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
134 value again.
135
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000136- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
137 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
138 and introducing s*.
139
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000140- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
141 object was stored in the freelist.
142
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000143- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
144 ValueError consistently across platforms.
145
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000146- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
147 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
148 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
149
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000150- Apply security patches from Apple.
151
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000152- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
153 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
154
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000155- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
156 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
157
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000158- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
159 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
160 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
161
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000162- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
163 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
164 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
165 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
166 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
167 failed have been fixed.
168
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000169Library
170-------
171
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000172- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
173
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000174- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
175 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
176
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000177- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
178 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
179 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
180
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000181- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
182 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
183 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
184 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
185 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
186 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
187
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000188- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
189 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
190
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000191- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
192
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000193- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
194
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000195- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
196
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000197- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
198 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
199
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000200- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
201 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
202
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000203- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
204 in a redirect.
205
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000206- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000207 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000208
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000209- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
210 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
211
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000212- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
213 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
214 regular expression.
215
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000216- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
217 thread-safe.
218
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000219- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
220 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
221 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
222
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000223- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
224
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000225- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
226 menu entries were not deleted.
227
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000228- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
229 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
230
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000231- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
232 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
233
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000234- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
235 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
236 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
237
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000238- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
239 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
240 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
241
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000242- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
243 the reload() built-in has been removed.
244
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000245- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000246 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000247 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

251 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000252
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000253- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
254 raised an AttributeError.
255

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000257 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
258 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000259
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000260- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification

282
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000283- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

315
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000316- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
317 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to

321 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
322
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000323- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output

325
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000326- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
327 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
328 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
329
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000330- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
331 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
332 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
333 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
334 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
335 level.
336
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000337- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
338 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
339 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
340 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
341 all imports from that module to fail.
342
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000343- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

353 another thread's dictionary.
354
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000355- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
356 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
357 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
358 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
359 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
360 10, -1).
361
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000362- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

403 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000404 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000876- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
877 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
878 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
879 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
880 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
881 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
882 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000946- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
947 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
948 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
949 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
950 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
951 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
952 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
953 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
954 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
955 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
956 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
957 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
958 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
959 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
960 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
961 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
962 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
963 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
964 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
965 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
966
967 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
968 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
969 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
970 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
971 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
972 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
973 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
974 access to the underlying socket used.
975
976 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
977 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
978 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000979
980 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000981 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

983 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
984
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000985 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
986 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001261
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001262- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001263 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1264
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001265- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1266 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1267 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1268 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1269 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1270 module is:
1271 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1272
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001273- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1274 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1275 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1276 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1277 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1278 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1279
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001280- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1281 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1282 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1283 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1284 PyObject_Format().
1285
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001286- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1287 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1288 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001289
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001290- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1299 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001300
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001301- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1302 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1303 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001304
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001305- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1306 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1307

1317 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001318

1333 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001334
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001335- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1336 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1337 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1338 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
