24 an existing .py counterpart, override the co_filename attributes of all
25 code objects if the original filename is obsolete (which can happen if the
26 file has been renamed, moved, or if it is accessed through different paths).

38 where the tp_hash and tp_dict slots are both NULL.
39
Benjamin Peterson7af65562008-12-29 17:56:58 +000040- Issue #4764: With io.open, IOError.filename is set when trying to open a

51
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000052- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always

113 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
114 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
115 it correctly refers to the initial element.

436 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
437 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
438 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent

606Core and Builtins
607-----------------
608
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000609- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
610 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
611 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
612 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
613 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
614 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
615 default.
616
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000617- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,

628 object was stored in the freelist.
629
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000630- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
631 ValueError consistently across platforms.
632
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000633- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
634 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
635 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.

644
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000645- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
646 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
647 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
648
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000649- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
650 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
651 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
652 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
653 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
654 failed have been fixed.

663
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000664- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
665 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
666 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
667
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000668- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
669 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
670 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
671 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
672 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

717
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000718- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

769
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000770- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
771 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
772 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
773
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000774- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

799
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000800Core and Builtins
801-----------------
802
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000803- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
804 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
805 an integer using operator.index().
806
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000807- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
808 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
809
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000810- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
811 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
812
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000813- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
814 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
815 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
816
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000817- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
818 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
819 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
820 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
821 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
822 level.
823
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000824- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
825 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
826 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
827 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
828 all imports from that module to fail.
829
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000830- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
831 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
832 new-style classes.
833
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000834- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
835 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
836 another file in sys.stdout.
837
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000838- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
839 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
840 another thread's dictionary.
841
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000842- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
843 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
844 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
845 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
846 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
847 10, -1).
848
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000849- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
850 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
851 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000852
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000853- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
854 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
855 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000856

861 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
862 error when they failed.
863
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000864- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000872- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
873 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
874
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000875- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000888
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000889- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
890 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000891 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000892 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
893 merged into trunk.
894
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000895- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000906 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000907
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000908- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
909 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
910
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000911- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001363- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1364 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1365 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1366 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1367 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1368 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1369 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1370 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001433- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1434 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1435 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1436 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1437 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1438 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1439 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1440 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1441 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1442 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1443 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1444 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1445 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1446 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1447 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1448 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1449 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1450 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1451 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1452 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1453
1454 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1455 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1456 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1457 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1458 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1459 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1460 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1461 access to the underlying socket used.
1462
1463 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1464 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1465 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001466
1467 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1740-----------------
1741
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001742- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001743 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001744
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001745- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1746
1747- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001748
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001749- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001750 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1751
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001752- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1753 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1754 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1755 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1756 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1757 module is:
1758 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1759
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001760- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1761 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1762 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1763 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1764 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1765 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1766
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001767- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1768 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1769 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1770 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1771 PyObject_Format().
1772
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001773- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1774 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1775 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001776
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001777- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001778 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1779 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001780
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001781- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1782 real or imaginary part.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001784- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1785 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1786 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001787
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001788- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1789 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1790 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001791
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001792- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1793 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1794
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001795- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1796 entries each.
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +00001797

1803 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1804 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001805
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001806- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001818- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1819 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1820 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001821

1823 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1824 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1825 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001826

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00002011 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
