124 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
125
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +0000126- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
127 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
128 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +0000129 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
130 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +0000131 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
132 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
133 DeprecationWarning.
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +0000134
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000135Library

156
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000157- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
158 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
159 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000160
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +0000161- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before

175 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
176 build documentation for more information.
177
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000178- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
179 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
180 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
181 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
182
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000183- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
184 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to

186
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000187- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
188 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
189 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
190
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000191Tests
192-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000193- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
194 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
195 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
196 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
197 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
198 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
199 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
200 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
201 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
202 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
203 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
204 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
205 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
206 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
207 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
208 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
209 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
210 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
211
212 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
213 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
214 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
215 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
216 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
217 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
218 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
219
220 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
221 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
222
223 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
224 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
225 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
226 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
227
228 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
229 run in parallel without issue.

235
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000236- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
237 gcc is used as compiler.
238
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000239- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
240 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

246 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
247 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
248 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
249
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000250- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
251 warnings.

742 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
743 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
744 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
745 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000746 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
747 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000748

2097-----
2098
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002099- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2100 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002104 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002105 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2106
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002107- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

2117
2118- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2119 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2120 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2121 results with huge strings.
2122
2123- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2124 and Py_REFCNT.
2125

2140- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2141 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2142
2143- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2144 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2145
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002146- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2147 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2148 some conditions.
2149
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002150- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
