11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinson826f3fe2008-12-05 21:55:28 +000015- Issue #4445: Replace "sizeof(PyStringObject)" with
16 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
17 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
18 (on average) per string allocation.
19
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000020- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
21 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
22 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
23
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000024- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__
25 instead of __len__. Behavior now matches other reversed iterators.
26
Benjamin Petersonc078f922008-11-21 22:27:24 +000027- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata
28 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
29
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000030- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000031 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
32 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
33 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
34
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000035- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
36 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000038- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.
39
Benjamin Peterson273c2332008-11-17 22:39:09 +000040- Issue #4230: If ``__getattr__`` is a descriptor, it now functions correctly.
41
Benjamin Peterson6624a9f2008-11-03 15:14:51 +000042- Issue #4048: The parser module now correctly validates relative imports.
43
Benjamin Petersondcee09d2008-10-31 02:16:05 +000044- Issue #4225: ``from __future__ import unicode_literals`` didn't work in an
45 exec statement.
46
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc69a9c5b2008-10-30 21:18:34 +000047- Issue #4176: Fixed a crash when pickling an object which ``__reduce__``
48 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
49
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000050- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
51 __future__ import didn't work.
52
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000053- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000054 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000055
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000056- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
57 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
58 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
59
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000060- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
61 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
62 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
63 it correctly refers to the initial element.
64

72 statements.
73
Georg Brandla07435d2008-12-05 09:23:14 +000074- Issue #4458: getopt.gnu_getopt() now recognizes a single "-" as an argument,
75 not a malformed option.
76

82 Content-Disposition headers.
83
Vinay Sajip6831d6b2008-12-04 20:32:18 +000084- Issue #4384: Added logging integration with warnings module using
85 captureWarnings(). This change includes a NullHandler which does nothing;
86 it will be of use to library developers who want to avoid the "No handlers
87 could be found for logger XXX" message which can appear if the library user
88 doesn't configure logging.
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000089

235-----------------
236
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000237- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
238
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000239- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
240 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
241 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
242 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
243 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
244 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
245 64bit values.
246
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000247- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
248 error.
249
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000250- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
251 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
252 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
253 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
254
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000255- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
256 a unicode argument.
257
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000258- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000261 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000262 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
263
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000264- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000265 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
266 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
267 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
268 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
269 type object.
270
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000271- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
272
273- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
274
275- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
276
277- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
278
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000279- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
280 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
281
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000282- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
283 ``__delslice__``.
284
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000285- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000409
410Core and Builtins
411-----------------
412
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000413- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
414 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
415 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
416 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
417 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
418 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
419 default.
420
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000421- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
422 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
423
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000424- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
425 value again.
426
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000427- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
428 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
429 and introducing s*.
430
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000431- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
432 object was stored in the freelist.
433
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000434- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
435 ValueError consistently across platforms.
436
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000437- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
438 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
439 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
440
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000441- Apply security patches from Apple.
442
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000443- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
444 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
445
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000446- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
447 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
448
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000449- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
450 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
451 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
452
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000453- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
454 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
455 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
456 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
457 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
458 failed have been fixed.
459
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000460Library
461-------
462
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000463- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
464
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000465- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
466 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
467
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000468- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
469 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
470 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
471
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000472- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
473 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
474 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
475 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
476 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
477 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
478
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000479- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
480 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
481
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000482- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
483
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000484- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
485
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000486- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
487
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000488- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
489 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
490
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000491- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
492 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
493
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000494- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
495 in a redirect.
496
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000497- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000498 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000499
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000500- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
501 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
502
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000503- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
504 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
505 regular expression.
506
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000507- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
508 thread-safe.
509
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000510- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
511 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
512 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
513
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000514- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000516- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
517 menu entries were not deleted.
518
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000519- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
520 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
521
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000522- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
523 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
524
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000525- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
526 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
527 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
528
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000529- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
530 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
531 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
532
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000533- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
534 the reload() built-in has been removed.

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000548 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
549 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.

573
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000574- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
575 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
576 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
577
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000578- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

606
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000607- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
608 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
609 an integer using operator.index().
610
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000611- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
612 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
613
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000614- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output

619 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
620
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000621- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
622 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
623 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
624 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
625 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
626 level.
627
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000628- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
629 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
630 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
631 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
632 all imports from that module to fail.
633
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000634- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

644 another thread's dictionary.
645
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000646- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
647 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
648 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
649 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
650 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
651 10, -1).
652

694 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000695 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001167- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1168 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1169 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1170 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1171 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1172 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1173 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001237- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1238 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1239 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1240 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1241 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1242 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1243 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1244 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1245 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1246 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1247 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1248 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1249 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1250 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1251 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1252 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1253 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1254 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1255 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1256 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1257
1258 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1259 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1260 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1261 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1262 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1263 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1264 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1265 access to the underlying socket used.
1266
1267 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1268 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1269 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001270
1271 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001272 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1274 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1275
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001276 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1277 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001552
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001553- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001554 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1555
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001556- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1557 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1558 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1559 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1560 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1561 module is:
1562 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1563
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001564- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1565 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1566 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1567 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1568 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1569 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1570
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001571- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1572 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1573 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1574 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1575 PyObject_Format().
1576
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001577- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1578 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1579 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001580
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001581- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1590 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001591
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001592- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1593 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1594 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001595
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001596- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1597 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1598

1608 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001609
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001610- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

1624 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001625
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001626- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1627 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1628 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1629 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
