8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.

54
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000055- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
56 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
57
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000058- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
59 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
60
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000061- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
62 in a redirect.
63
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000064- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000065 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000066
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000067- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
68 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
69
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000070- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
71 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
72 regular expression.
73
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000074- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
75 thread-safe.
76
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000077- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
78 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
79 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
80
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000081- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
82
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000083- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
84 menu entries were not deleted.
85
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000086- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
87 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
88
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000089- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
90 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
91
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000092- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
93 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
94 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
95
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000096- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
97 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
98 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
99
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000100- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
101 the reload() built-in has been removed.
102
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000103- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000104 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000105 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
106 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,

108 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
109 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000110
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000111- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
112 raised an AttributeError.
113
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000114- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000115 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
116 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000117
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000118- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
119 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
120
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000121- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
122

136- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
137 configuration files.
138
139- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
140
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000141- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
142 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
143 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
144
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000145- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
146 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
147 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
148
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000149Build

152- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
153
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000154Documentation
155-------------
156
157- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
158 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
159 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
160 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

167
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000168Core and Builtins
169-----------------
170
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000171- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
172 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
173 an integer using operator.index().
174
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000175- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
176 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
177
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000178- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
179 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
180
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000181- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
182 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
183 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
184
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000185- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
186 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
187 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
188 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
189 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
190 level.
191
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000192- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
193 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
194 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
195 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
196 all imports from that module to fail.
197
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000198- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
199 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
200 new-style classes.
201
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000202- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
203 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
204 another file in sys.stdout.
205
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000206- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
207 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
208 another thread's dictionary.
209
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000210- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
211 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
212 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
213 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
214 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
215 10, -1).
216
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000217- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
218 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
219 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000220
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000221- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
222 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
223 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000224
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000225Library
226-------
227
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000228- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
229 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
230 error when they failed.
231
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000232- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
233
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000234- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
235
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000236- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
237
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +0000238- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
239
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000240- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
241 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
242
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000243- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000244
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000245- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
246 a valid dlerror() message.
247
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000248- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
249 incomplete structure was created.
250

252
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000253- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
254
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000255- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000256
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000257- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
258 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000259 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000260 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
261 merged into trunk.
262
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000263- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

268
269- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
270 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000271 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000272
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000273- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000274 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000275
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000276- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
277 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
278
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000279- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
280 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

283 interrupted by a signal.
284
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000285- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000286 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
287 Prevents a deadlock.
288
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000289- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
290 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
291 default https port (443).
292
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000293- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
294 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
295 if the new process uses the threading module.
296
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000297Tests
298-----
299
300- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
301 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
302 have been added to test_warnings.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000797
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000798- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
799 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
800 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
801 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
802 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
803 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
804 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
805 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
806 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
807 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
808 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
809 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
810 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
811 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
812 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
813 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
814 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
815 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
816 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
817 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
818
819 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
820 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
821 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
822 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
823 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
824 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
825 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
826 access to the underlying socket used.
827
828 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
829 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
830 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000831
832 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000833 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

835 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
836
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000837 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
838 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1116
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001117- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1118 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1119 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1120 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1121 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1122 module is:
1123 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1124
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001125- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1126 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1127 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1128 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1129 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1130 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1131
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001132- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1133 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1134 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

1136 PyObject_Format().
1137
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001138- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1139 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
