89
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000090Tests
91-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000092- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
93 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
94 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
95 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
96 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
97 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
98 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
99 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
100 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
101 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
102 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
103 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
104 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
105 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
106 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
107 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
108 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
109 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
110
111 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
112 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
113 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
114 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
115 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
116 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
117 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
118
119 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
120 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
121
122 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
123 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
124 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
125 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
126
127 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
128 run in parallel without issue.

Mark Dickinson65134662008-04-25 16:11:04 +0000133- Issue #1496032: On alpha, use -mieee when gcc is the compiler.
134
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000135- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
136 gcc is used as compiler.
137
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000138C API
139-----
140
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000141- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
142 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
143 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
144 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
145
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000146- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
147 warnings.

377-----------------
378
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000379- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000380 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000381
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000382- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
383
384- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000385
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000386- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000387 issue 215555 for a discussion.
388
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000389- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
390 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
391 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
392 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
393 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
394 module is:
395 from future_builtins import hex, oct
396
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000397- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
398 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
399 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
400 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
401 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
402 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
403
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000404- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
405 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
406 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
407 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
408 PyObject_Format().
409
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000410- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
411 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
412
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000413- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000415 on a registered virtual subclass.
416
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000417- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
418 imaginary part.
419
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000420- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000421 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
422 OS earlier.

426
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000427- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
428 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
429
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000430- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
431 each.

451
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000452- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
453 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
454 generator.
455
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000456- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000457 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000458 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
459 "else" suite.

582 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
583 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
584 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
585 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000632- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
633 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
634 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

636 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000637 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
638 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000639
