16 collecting the oldest generation) so that allocating lots of objects without
17 destroying them does not show quadratic performance. Based on a proposal by
18 Martin von Löwis at
19 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2008-June/080579.html.
20
Martin v. Löwisb90304a2009-01-07 18:40:40 +000021- Issue #4850: Change COUNT_ALLOCS variables to Py_ssize_t.
22

24 an existing .py counterpart, override the co_filename attributes of all
25 code objects if the original filename is obsolete (which can happen if the
26 file has been renamed, moved, or if it is accessed through different paths).
27 Patch by Ziga Seilnacht and Jean-Paul Calderone.

35 did not get collected.
36
Nick Coghlan180e4002008-12-30 01:18:48 +000037- Issue #4701: PyObject_Hash now implicitly calls PyType_Ready on types
38 where the tp_hash and tp_dict slots are both NULL.
39
Benjamin Peterson7af65562008-12-29 17:56:58 +000040- Issue #4764: With io.open, IOError.filename is set when trying to open a

50 fail.
51
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000052- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always

71
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000072- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

103 __future__ import didn't work.
104
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +0000105- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning

113 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
114 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
115 it correctly refers to the initial element.

431 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
432 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS

601Core and Builtins
602-----------------
603
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000604- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
605 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
606 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
607 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
608 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
609 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
610 default.
611
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000612- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,

623 object was stored in the freelist.
624
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000625- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
626 ValueError consistently across platforms.
627
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000628- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
629 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
630 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.

636
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000637- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on

639
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000640- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when

642 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
643
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000644- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
645 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
646 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
647 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
648 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
649 failed have been fixed.

658
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000659- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
660 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
661 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
662
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000663- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
664 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
665 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
666 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
667 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000765- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
766 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
767 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
768

794
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000795Core and Builtins
796-----------------
797
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000798- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
799 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
800 an integer using operator.index().
801
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000802- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
803 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
804
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000805- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
806 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
807
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000808- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
809 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
810 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
811
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000812- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
813 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
814 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
815 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
816 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
817 level.
818
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000819- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
820 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
821 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
822 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
823 all imports from that module to fail.
824
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000825- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
826 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
827 new-style classes.
828
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000829- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
830 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
831 another file in sys.stdout.
832
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000833- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
834 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
835 another thread's dictionary.
836
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000837- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
838 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
839 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
840 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
841 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
842 10, -1).
843
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000844- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
845 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
846 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000847
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000848- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
849 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
850 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

857 error when they failed.
858
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000859- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

869
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000870- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000884- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
885 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000886 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000887 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
888 merged into trunk.
889
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000890- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000901 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000902
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000903- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
904 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
905
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000906- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001358- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1359 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1360 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1361 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1362 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1363 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1364 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1365 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001428- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1429 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1430 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1431 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1432 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1433 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1434 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1435 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1436 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1437 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1438 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1439 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1440 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1441 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1442 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1443 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1444 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1445 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1446 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1447 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1448
1449 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1450 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1451 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1452 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1453 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1454 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1455 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1456 access to the underlying socket used.
1457
1458 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1459 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1460 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001461
1462 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1735-----------------
1736
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +00001737- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001738 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001739
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001740- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1741
1742- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001743
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001744- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001745 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1746
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001747- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1748 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1749 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1750 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1751 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1752 module is:
1753 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1754
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001755- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1756 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1757 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1758 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1759 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1760 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1761
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001762- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1763 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1764 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1765 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1766 PyObject_Format().
1767
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001768- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1769 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1770 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001771
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001772- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001773 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1774 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001775
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001776- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1777 real or imaginary part.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001779- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1780 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1781 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001782
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001783- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1784 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1785 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001786
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001787- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1788 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1789
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001790- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1791 entries each.

1798 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1799 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001800

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001813- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1814 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1815 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001816

1818 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1819 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1820 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001821
