16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4c270c2008-01-14 00:29:41 +000029- Patch #1700288: added a type attribute cache that caches method accesses,
30 resulting in speedups in heavily object-oriented code.
31
Neal Norwitz3fc15b82008-01-10 05:42:58 +000032- Bug #1776: __import__() no longer accepts filenames on any platform.

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and
86 if the deallocation of its frames somehow calls the PyGILState_Ensure() /

95 It now correctly saves its state between chunks of data.
96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +0000220- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.
244

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

1441 lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied solely on macfs
1442 and was a no-op under OS X.

1450Core and builtins
1451-----------------
1452
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001453- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001454 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1455 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001456
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001457 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1458 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1459 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1460 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1461 exception, logged, etc.
1462
1463 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1464 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001465
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001466- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1467
1468- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1469 with new-style classes.
1470
1471- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1472 classic classes.
1473
1474- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1475 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1476 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1477 to effectively use __index__.
1478
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001479- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1480 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1481
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001482- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
1483
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001484- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1485 sys.stdin is closed.
1486
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001487- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1488 the Python dll again.
1489
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001490- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1491 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1492 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1493 will be regenerated.
1494
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001495- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1496 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1497 immediately popped off the stack.
1498
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001499- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

1504
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +00001505- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1506 generated for generator expressions.
1507
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001508- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1509 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1510 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1511 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1512
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001513- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001514 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
1515 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001516 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001517
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001518- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +00001519 an exception.
1520
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001521- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001522 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001523 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1524 duplicate UUIDs.
1525
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001526- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1527 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
1528
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +00001529- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
1530
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +00001531- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
1532 file correctly even on Windows.
1533
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +00001534- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
1535 already been cleaned up.
1536
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001537- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +00001538
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001539- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
1540 str(exception) raised an exception.
1541
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +00001542- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1543 generated for nested functions.

1552 raises the correct exceptions.
1553
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +00001554- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
1555 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
1556
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +00001557- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
1558 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
1559 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
1560
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +00001561- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
1562 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
1563 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.

1615
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001616- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001617 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1618
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001619- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1620
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001621- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1622 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1623 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1624
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001625- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1626 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1627
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001628- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1629 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1630 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1631 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1632
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001633- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1634 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1635 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1636 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1637
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001638- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1649
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001650- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
1651 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
1652
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001653- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001654 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001655 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001656
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001657- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001658 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001659 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
1660 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
1661
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001662- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.

1670
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +00001671- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
1672 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1673
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001674- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
1675 KeyboardInterrupt.
1676
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001677- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

1682
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001683- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001684 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

1686
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001687- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1688 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1689
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001690- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1691 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1692 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1693 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1694 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1695
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001696- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

1711
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001712- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1713
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001714- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1715
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001716- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1717 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1718 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1719 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time

Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001722- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1723
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001724- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1725 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1726 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1727 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1728 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1729 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1730 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1731 charset and language parts).
1732
1733 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1734 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1735
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001736- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1737
1738- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1739 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1740
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001741- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1742 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1743 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1744 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1767 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1768
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001769- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

1772
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001773- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1791 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1792
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001793- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

1808- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1809 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001810 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1845
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001846- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1847 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1848 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1849 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1850 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from

1898
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001899- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1900 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1901 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1902
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001903- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001918- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1919 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1920 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001921
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001922- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001955 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1956 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1957
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001958- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001992- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1993 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1994 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1995
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001996- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned

Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00002004- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
2005 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
2006 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
2007 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
2008 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
2009
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00002010- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept

2018
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00002019- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
2020 away like they were in Python 2.4.
2021
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00002022- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
2023 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
2024 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
2025
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00002026- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
2027 Unicode 4.1.
2028
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00002029- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
2030 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
2031 fewer open calls on startup.
2032
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00002033- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
2034 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
2035 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
2036 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
2037 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
2038
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00002039- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
2040 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
2041 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
2042 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2043
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002044- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2045
2046- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2047 "base" parameter.
2048
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002049- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2050 objects.
2051
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002052- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2053 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
2054 C library function.
2055
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00002056- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
2057
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00002058- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
2059
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002060- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2061 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2062 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2063 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2064
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002065- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
2066
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00002067- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
2068
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002069- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2070 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2071 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2072 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2073
2074- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2075 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2076 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2077 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2085
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00002086- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
2087 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
2088
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00002089- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
2090
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00002091- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
2092 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
2093 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
2094 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
2095
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00002096- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002106- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
2107 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
2108
2109- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
2110 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
2111
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00002112- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
2113 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
2114 Windows platforms).
2115
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002116- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
2117 may deadlock.
2118
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00002119- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
2120 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
2121
2122- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
2123 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

2131
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00002132- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
2133 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
2134 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
2135
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002136- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
2137 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
2138 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
2139
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00002140- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

2173 double-byte encodings.
2174
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002175- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2176 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2177 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2178 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2179 of the matching pair.
2180
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00002181- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

2188
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00002189- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
2190
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00002191- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
2192 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
2193 function when writing wrapper functions.
2194

2196 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002197
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002198- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2199 for lookup.
2200
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002201- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2202 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2203 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2204 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2205 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
2206
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00002207- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

2225 tarfiles.
2226
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002227- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2283-----------------
2284
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002285- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2286 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2287
2288 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
2289 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
2290 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

2292 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
2293
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002294- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2295
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002296- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2297 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2298 multiple times.
2299
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002300- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2301 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2302 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2303
2304- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2305 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2306
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002307- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2308 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2309 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002310 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002311 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002312
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002313 def __hash__(self):
2314 return id(self) # WRONG
2315
2316 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2317 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002318 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002319 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2320 necessarily so.
2321
2322- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002323 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,

2328 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2329 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2330 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2331 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

2446
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002447- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2448 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2449 the current Decimal context.
2450
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002451- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2452 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2453 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2454 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002480Core and builtins
2481-----------------
2482
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002483- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2484 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2485
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002486- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2487 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2488 end in .PYD.
2489
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002490- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2491 sys.stdout.encoding.
2492
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002493- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2494
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002495- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2496
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002497- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2498
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002499- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2500 5.4 and later versions.
2501
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002502- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2503 now gives a SyntaxError.
2504
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002505- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2506 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2507 (closes patch #1170323).
2508
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002509- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2510 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2511 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2512 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2513 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2514 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2515 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002516 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2517 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002518 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2519 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2520
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002521- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2522 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2523 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2524
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002525- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2526 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2527 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2528 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2529
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002530- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2531
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002532- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2533 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2534 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2535 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2536
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002537- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2538 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2539 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2540 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2541 absolute_import' is used.
2542
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002543- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2544 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2545 exceptions.
2546
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002547- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002548 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2549
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002550- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002551
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002552- Patch 1433928:
2553 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2554 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2555 KeyError.
2556
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002557- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2558 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2559 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002560 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002561 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2562 - The built-in file type.
2563 - The thread.LockType type.
2564 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2565 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2566 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002567
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002568- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2569 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2570
2571 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2572 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2573
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002574- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2575
2576- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2577 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2578 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2579 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2580 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002581
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002582- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2583 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2584 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2585
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002586- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2587 configure would break checking curses.h.
2588
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002589- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2590 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2591
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002592- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2593
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00002594- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
2595
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002596- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2597
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002598- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2599 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2600
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002601- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002603 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2604
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002605- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2606 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002607 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002620
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002621- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2622 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2623 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2624 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2625 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2626
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002627- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

2646
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002647- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002648 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2649 was empty.
2650
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002651- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2652 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2653
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002654- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

2671
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002672- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2673 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2674
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002675- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2676 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2677 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2678
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002679- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2680
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002681- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2682 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2683
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002684- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2685 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2686 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002687 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002688 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2689 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2690 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2691 realloc.
2692
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002693- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

2695
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002696- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2697 like their int counterparts.
2698
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002699- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2700 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2701 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2702 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2703 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2704
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002705- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2706 serializing floats.
2707
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002708- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2709 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2710 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2711
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002712- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2713 278.
2714
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002715- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2716 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2717 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2718 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002719 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002720 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002721 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002722
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002723- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2724 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2725 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2726 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2727
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002728- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2729 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2730 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2731 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2732 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2733
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002734- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2735 disabled caused a crash.
2736
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002737- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2738 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2739
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002740- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00002741 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
2742
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00002743- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
2744
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002745- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002746 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2747 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2748 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

2762
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002763- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002764 an ferror() call.
2765
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002766- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2771
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00002772- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
2773
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00002774- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002776
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002777- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
2778 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
2779 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2780
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002781- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2782 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2783 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2784
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002785- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2786 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2787 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2788 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2789 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00003000 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00003001 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00003002 module will not be built.

3027
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00003028- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
3029 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
3030 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
3031 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
3032 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
3033 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
3034 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3127 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
3128 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

3308
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003309- Enhancements to the csv module:
3310
3311 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003312 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003313 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003314 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3315 reporting.
3316 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3317 dictates.
3318 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003319 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003320 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003321 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3322 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003323 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3324 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003325 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003326 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3327 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3328 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3329 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3330 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3331 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3332 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3333 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3334 without first creating a dialect class.
3335 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3336 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3337 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003338 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003339 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3340 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003341 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3342 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3343 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3344 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003345 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3346 This has been fixed.
3347
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003348- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3349 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3350 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3351 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3352
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003353- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3354
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00003355- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
3356 (Bug #951915).
3357
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003358- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3359 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3360 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003361 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003362
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00003363- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
3364
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003365- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
3366 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
3367
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003368- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
3369
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00003370- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.
3371

3373
Raymond Hettinger6c92d762004-12-05 03:28:00 +00003374- the pstats module no longer uses the deprecated ignore() method.
3375
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003376- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3377
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003378- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3379 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3380 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3381
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003382- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003383 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003384
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003385- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3386 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3387 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3388
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003389- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3390 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3391 ``.decompress()`` calls.

Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003393- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3394 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003395
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003396- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3397 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3398
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003399- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3400 correctly.
3401
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003402- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3403 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3404 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3405 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3406 between two lines.
3407
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003408- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3409 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3410 handlers.
3411
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003412- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003413 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3414 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003415
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003416- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
3417 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3418
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00003419- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
3420 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003421
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003422- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3423
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003424- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3425 touch the recursion limit.
3426
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003427- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3428 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003429 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3430 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3431 special classes that use unicode.

3446
Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00003447- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
3448 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
3449

3453 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
3454
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00003455- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
3456 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
3457
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003458- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3459 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3460 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003461 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003462
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003463- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3464 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3465 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
3466
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00003467- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
3468
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003469- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3470 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3471
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003472- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3473 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3474 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3475 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3476 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3477 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3478 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3479 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3480
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003481- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3482 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3483 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3484 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.
3485
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003486C API
3487-----
3488
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003489- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3490 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3491 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3492 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3493 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3494 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3495 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3496 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3497 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3498 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3499
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003500- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
3501
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00003502- Removed PyRange_New().
3503
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00003504- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
3505 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
3506 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
3507 mappings.
