89 __future__ import didn't work.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000411- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
412 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
413 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
414 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
415 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
416 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000437 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

582Core and Builtins
583-----------------
584
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000585- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
586 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
587 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
588 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
589 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
590 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
591 default.
592
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000593- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
594 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
595
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000596- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
597 value again.
598
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000599- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
600 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
601 and introducing s*.
602
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000603- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
604 object was stored in the freelist.
605
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000606- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
607 ValueError consistently across platforms.
608
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000609- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
610 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
611 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
612
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000613- Apply security patches from Apple.
614
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000615- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
616 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
617
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000618- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on

Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000621- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
622 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
623 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
624
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000625- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
626 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
627 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
628 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
629 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
630 failed have been fixed.

639
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000640- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
641 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
642 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
643
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000644- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
645 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
646 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
647 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
648 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

775
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000776Core and Builtins
777-----------------
778
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000779- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
780 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
781 an integer using operator.index().
782
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000783- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
784 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
785
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000786- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
787 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
788
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000789- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
790 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
791 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
792
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000793- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
794 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
795 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
796 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
797 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
798 level.
799
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000800- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
801 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
802 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
803 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
804 all imports from that module to fail.
805
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000806- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
807 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
808 new-style classes.
809
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000810- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
811 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
812 another file in sys.stdout.
813
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000814- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
815 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
816 another thread's dictionary.
817
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000818- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
819 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
820 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
821 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
822 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
823 10, -1).
824
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000825- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
826 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
827 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000828
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000829- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
830 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
831 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

838 error when they failed.
839
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000840- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

850
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000851- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000865- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
866 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000867 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000868 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
869 merged into trunk.
870
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000871- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000884- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
885 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
886
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000887- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001409- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1410 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1411 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1412 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1413 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1414 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1415 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1416 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1417 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1418 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1419 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1420 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1421 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1422 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1423 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1424 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1425 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1426 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1427 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1428 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1429
1430 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1431 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1432 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1433 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1434 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1435 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1436 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1437 access to the underlying socket used.
1438
1439 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1440 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1441 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001442
1443 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001728- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1729 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1730 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1731 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1732 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1733 module is:
1734 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1735
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001736- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1737 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1738 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1739 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1740 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1741 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1742
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001743- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1744 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1745 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1746 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1747 PyObject_Format().
1748

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001982- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1983 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1984 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1985 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1986 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001987 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1988 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001989
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001990- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1991 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1992 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1993 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1994 method.
