8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000013- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
14 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
15 an integer using operator.index().
16
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000017- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
18 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
19
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000020- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
21 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
22
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000023- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
24 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
25 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
26
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000027- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
28 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
29 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
30 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
31 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
32 level.
33
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000034- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
35 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
36 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
37 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
38 all imports from that module to fail.
39
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000040- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
41 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
42 new-style classes.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000044- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
45 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
46 another file in sys.stdout.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000048- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
49 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
50 another thread's dictionary.
51
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000052- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
53 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
54 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
55 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
56 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
57 10, -1).
58
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000059- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000060 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000061 switch to the new compiler.
62
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000063- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
64 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
65 calls them via gc.collect().
66
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000067Library
68-------
69
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +000070- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
71 configuration files.
72
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +000073- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
74

78
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +000079- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
80 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
81

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +000084- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
85 a valid dlerror() message.
86
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +000087- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
88 incomplete structure was created.
89

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000096- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
97 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000098 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000099 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
100 merged into trunk.
101
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000102- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

116 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
117
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000118- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000125 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
126 Prevents a deadlock.
127
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000128- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
129 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
130 default https port (443).
131
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000132- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
133 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
134 if the new process uses the threading module.
135
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000136Tests

172
Brett Cannondea1b562008-06-27 00:31:13 +0000173- Issue #3211: warnings.warn_explicit() did not guard against its 'registry'
174 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
175 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
176 bus error.
177
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000178- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

195 equals ``gen.gi_code.co_name``, like ``func.__name___`` that equals
196 ``func.func_code.co_name``. The repr() of a generator now also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000568- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
569 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
570 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

573 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
574 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000638- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
639 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
640 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
641 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
642 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
643 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
644 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
645 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
646 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
647 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
648 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
649 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
650 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
651 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
652 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
653 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
654 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
655 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
656 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
657 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
658
659 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
660 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
661 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
662 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
663 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
664 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
665 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
666 access to the underlying socket used.
667
668 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
669 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
670 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000671
672 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000673 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000674 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
675 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
676
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000677 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
678 suite to run in parallel without issue.

952- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000953
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000954- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000955 issue 215555 for a discussion.
956
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000957- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
958 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
959 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
960 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
961 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
962 module is:
963 from future_builtins import hex, oct
964
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000965- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
966 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
967 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
968 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
969 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
970 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
971
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000972- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
973 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
974 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
975 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
976 PyObject_Format().
977
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000978- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
979 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
980 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000981
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000982- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

991 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000992
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000993- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
994 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
995 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000996

1008 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1009 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001010
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001011- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they
