39 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
40 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
41 possible.
42
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000043Library
44-------
45
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000046- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
47 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
48 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000049
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000050- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before

60 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
61 python code.
62
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000063- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
64 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
65 build documentation for more information.
66
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000067- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
68 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
69 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
70 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
71
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000072- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
73 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
74 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
75
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000076- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
77 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
78 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
79
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000080Tests
81-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000082- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
83 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
84 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
85 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
86 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
87 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
88 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
89 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
90 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
91 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
92 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
93 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
94 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
95 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
96 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
97 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
98 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
99 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
100
101 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
102 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
103 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
104 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
105 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
106 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
107 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
108
109 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
110 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
111
112 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
113 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
114 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
115 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
116
117 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
118 run in parallel without issue.

120Build
121-----
122
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000123- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
124 gcc is used as compiler.
125
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000126C API
127-----
128
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000129- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
130 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
131 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
132 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

362-----------------
363
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000364- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000365 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000366
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000367- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
368
369- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000370
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000371- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000372 issue 215555 for a discussion.
373
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000374- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
375 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
376 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
377 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
378 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
379 module is:
380 from future_builtins import hex, oct
381
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000382- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
383 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
384 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
385 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
386 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
387 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
388
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000389- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
390 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
391 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
392 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
393 PyObject_Format().
394
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000395- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
396 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
397
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000398- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

401
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000402- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
403 imaginary part.
404
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000405- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000406 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
407 OS earlier.
408

410 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
411
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000412- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
413 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
414
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000415- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
416 each.

436
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000437- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
438 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
439 generator.
440
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000441- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000442 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000443 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
444 "else" suite.

567 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
568 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
569 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
570 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

601 inherited from a builtin base.
602
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000603- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000604 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000617- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
618 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
619 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

621 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000622 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
623 as supported by type.__new__().
