16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and
86 if the deallocation of its frames somehow calls the PyGILState_Ensure() /

96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +0000220- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001441- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001442 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1443 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001444
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001445 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1446 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1447 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1448 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1449 exception, logged, etc.
1450
1451 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1452 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001453
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001454- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1455
1456- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1457 with new-style classes.
1458
1459- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1460 classic classes.
1461
1462- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1463 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1464 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1465 to effectively use __index__.
1466
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001467- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1468 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1469
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001470- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
1471
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001472- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1473 sys.stdin is closed.
1474
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001475- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1476 the Python dll again.
1477
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001478- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1479 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1480 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1481 will be regenerated.
1482
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001483- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1484 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1485 immediately popped off the stack.
1486
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001487- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

1494 generated for generator expressions.
1495
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001496- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1497 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1498 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1499 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1500
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001501- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001502 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
1503 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001504 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001505
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001506- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises

1508
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001509- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001510 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some

1512 duplicate UUIDs.
1513
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001514- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1515 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
1516

1601Core and builtins
1602-----------------
1603
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001604- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001605 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1606
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001607- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1608
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001609- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1610 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1611 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1612
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001613- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1614 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1615
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001616- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1617 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1618 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1619 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1620
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001621- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1622 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1623 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1624 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1625
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001626- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1637
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001638- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

1640
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001641- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001642 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001643 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001644
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001645- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001646 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001647 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
1648 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.

1658
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +00001659- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
1660 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1661
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001662- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

1664
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001665- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

1670
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001671- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001672 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

1674
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001675- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1676 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1677
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001678- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1679 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1680 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1681 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1682 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1683
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001684- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +00001691
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +00001692- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback

1694
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001695- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.

Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001697- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1698 value in the traceback module.
1699
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001700- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1701
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001702- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1703
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001704- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1705 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1706 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1707 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1708 tuple pre-2.4.
1709
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001710- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1711
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001712- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1713 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1714 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1715 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1716 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1717 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1718 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1719 charset and language parts).
1720
1721 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are

1760
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001761- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1779 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1780
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001781- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

1832 started after line 256.
1833
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001834- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1835 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1836 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1837 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1838 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1839 an extension.

1886
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001887- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1888 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1889 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1890
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001891- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001906- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1907 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1908 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001909
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001910- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001943 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1944 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1945
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001946- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1978-----------------
1979
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001980- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1981 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1982 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1983
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001984- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1985 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1986
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001987- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1988
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001989- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001990 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001991
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001992- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1993 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1994 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1995 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1996 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1997
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001998- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1999 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
2000
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00002001- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
2002 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
2003 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
2004 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
2005 requested.
2006
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00002007- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
2008 away like they were in Python 2.4.
2009
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00002010- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
2011 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
2012 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
2013
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00002014- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to

2016
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00002017- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
2018 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to

Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00002021- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
2022 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
2023 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
2024 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
2025 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
2026
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00002027- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
2028 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
2029 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
2030 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2031
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002032- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2033
2034- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2035 "base" parameter.
2036
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002037- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2038 objects.
2039
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002040- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2041 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
2042 C library function.
2043
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00002044- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
2045
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00002046- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
2047
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002048- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2049 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2050 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2051 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2052
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002053- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
2054
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00002055- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
2056
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002057- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2058 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2059 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2060 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2061
2062- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2063 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2064 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2065 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00002079- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
2080 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
2081 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
2082 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
2083

2095 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
2096
2097- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
2098 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
2099
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00002100- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

2102 Windows platforms).
2103
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002104- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

2121 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
2122 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
2123
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002124- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
2125 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
2126 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
2127
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00002128- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

2161 double-byte encodings.
2162
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002163- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2164 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2165 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2166 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2167 of the matching pair.
2168
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00002169- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

2176
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00002177- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
2178
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00002179- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
2180 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
2181 function when writing wrapper functions.
2182

2184 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002185
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002186- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2187 for lookup.
2188
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002189- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2190 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2191 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2192 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2193 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
2194
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00002195- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

2213 tarfiles.
2214
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002215- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2272
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002273- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2274 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2275
2276 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile

2281
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002282- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2283
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002284- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2285 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2286 multiple times.
2287
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002288- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2289 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2290 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2291
2292- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2293 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2294
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002295- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2296 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2297 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002298 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002299 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002300
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002301 def __hash__(self):
2302 return id(self) # WRONG
2303
2304 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2305 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002306 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002307 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2308 necessarily so.
2309
2310- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002311 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002312 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002313 #1454844)
2314
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002315- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
2316 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2317 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2318 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2319 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

2434
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002435- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2436 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2437 the current Decimal context.
2438
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002439- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2440 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2441 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2442 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002468Core and builtins
2469-----------------
2470
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002471- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2472 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2473
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002474- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2475 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2476 end in .PYD.
2477
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002478- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2479 sys.stdout.encoding.
2480
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002481- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2482
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002483- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2484
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002485- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2486
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002487- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2488 5.4 and later versions.
2489
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002490- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2491 now gives a SyntaxError.
2492
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002493- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2494 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2495 (closes patch #1170323).
2496
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002497- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2498 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2499 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2500 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2501 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2502 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2503 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002504 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2505 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002506 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2507 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2508
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002509- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2510 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2511 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2512
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002513- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2514 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2515 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2516 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2517
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002518- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2519
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002520- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2521 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2522 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2523 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2524
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002525- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2526 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2527 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2528 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2529 absolute_import' is used.
2530
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002531- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2532 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2533 exceptions.
2534
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002535- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002536 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2537
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002538- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002539
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002540- Patch 1433928:
2541 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2542 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2543 KeyError.
2544
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002545- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2546 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2547 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002548 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002549 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2550 - The built-in file type.
2551 - The thread.LockType type.
2552 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2553 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2554 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002555
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002556- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2557 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2558
2559 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2560 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2561
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002562- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2563
2564- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2565 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2566 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2567 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2568 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002569
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002570- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2571 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2572 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2573
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002574- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2575 configure would break checking curses.h.
2576
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002577- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2578 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2579
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002580- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

2583
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002584- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2585
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002586- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2587 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2588

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002591 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2592
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002593- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2594 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002595 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

2604
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002605- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002606 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so

2634
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002635- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002636 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator

2662
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002663- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2664 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2665 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2666
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002667- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().

2671
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002672- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2673 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2674 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002675 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002676 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2677 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2678 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2679 realloc.

2685 like their int counterparts.
2686
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002687- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2688 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2689 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see

2692
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002693- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2694 serializing floats.
2695
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002696- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2697 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2698 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2699
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002700- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP

2702
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002703- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2704 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2705 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2706 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002707 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002708 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002709 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002710
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002711- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2712 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2713 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2714 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2715
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002716- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2717 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2718 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2719 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2720 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2721
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002722- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2723 disabled caused a crash.
2724
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002725- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2726 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2727
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002728- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002733- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002734 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2735 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2736 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

2750
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002751- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002752 an ferror() call.
2753
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002754- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2767 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2768
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002769- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2770 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2771 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2772
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002773- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2774 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2775 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2776 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2777 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002988 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002989 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002990 module will not be built.

3015
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00003016- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
3017 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
3018 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
3019 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
3020 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
3021 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
3022 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3028 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
3029 have been added.

3116 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

3238 work as expected.
3239
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00003240- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

3296
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003297- Enhancements to the csv module:
3298
3299 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003300 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003301 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003302 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3303 reporting.
3304 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3305 dictates.
3306 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003307 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003308 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003309 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3310 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003311 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3312 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003313 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003314 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3315 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3316 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3317 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3318 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3319 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3320 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3321 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3322 without first creating a dialect class.
3323 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3324 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3325 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003326 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003327 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3328 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003329 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3330 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3331 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3332 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003333 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3334 This has been fixed.
3335
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003336- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3337 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3338 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3339 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3340
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003341- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3342

3344 (Bug #951915).
3345
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003346- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3347 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3348 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003349 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003350

3365
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003366- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3367 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3368 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3369
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003370- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003371 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003372
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003373- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3374 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3375 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3376
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003377- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3378 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3379 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003380
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003381- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003383
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003384- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3385 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``

Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003390- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3391 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3392 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3393 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3394 between two lines.

Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003396- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3397 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3398 handlers.
3399
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003400- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003401 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3402 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003417 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3418 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3419 special classes that use unicode.

3459
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003460- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3461 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3462 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3463 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3464 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3465 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3466 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3467 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3468
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003469- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3470 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3471 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.

3475-----
3476
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003477- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3478 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3479 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3480 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3481 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3482 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3483 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3484 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3485 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3486 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3487
