13-----------------
14
Georg Brandlb9f4ad32006-10-29 18:31:42 +000015- Bug #1576657: when setting a KeyError for a tuple key, make sure that

17
Neal Norwitz21997af2006-10-28 21:19:07 +000018- Bug #1565514, SystemError not raised on too many nested blocks.
19
Thomas Hellerdf08f0b2006-10-27 18:31:36 +000020- Bug #1576174: WindowsError now displays the windows error code
21 again, no longer the posix error code.
22
Martin v. Löwisb5bc5372006-10-27 06:16:31 +000023- Patch #1549049: Support long values in structmember, issue warnings

31
Georg Brandl846f73a2006-10-08 07:11:54 +000032- Bug #1569998: break inside a try statement (outside a loop) is now
33 recognized and rejected.
34

38 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
39
40- A number of places, including integer negation and absolute value,
41 were fixed to not rely on undefined behaviour of the C compiler
42 anymore.
Martin v. Löwis820d6ac2006-10-04 05:47:34 +000043

Brett Cannon9adeab72006-09-20 18:34:28 +000061- Bug #1551432: Exceptions do not define an explicit __unicode__ method. This
62 allows calling unicode() on exceptions classes directly to succeed.
63
Georg Brandlec6c2df2006-09-11 09:38:35 +000064- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
65 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.

296Core and builtins
297-----------------
298
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000299- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000300 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
301 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000302
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000303 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
304 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
305 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
306 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
307 exception, logged, etc.
308

468 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
469 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
470
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000471- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
472 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
473
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000474- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
475 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
476 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
477 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
478
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000479- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
480 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
481 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
482 the code to make that compiler happy again.
483

498
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000499- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000500 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000501 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

522
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000523- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
524 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
525
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000526- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done

535 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
536 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

556
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000557- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
558
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000559- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
560 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
561 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
562 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
563 tuple pre-2.4.
564
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000565- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
566
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000567- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
568 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
569 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
570 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
571 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
572 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
573 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
574 charset and language parts).
575
576 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
577 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
578
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000579- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
580
581- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
582 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
583
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000584- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
585 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
586 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
587 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

609 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
610 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
611
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000612- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000613 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000614 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
615
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000616- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
617 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000618
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000619- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
620 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
621
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000622- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
623 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
624 sleepycat API allows.
625
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000626- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
627 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
628
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000629Tests
630-----
631
632- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
633 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
634 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
635
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000636- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
637 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
638 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

646---
647
648- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
649 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
650
651- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
652 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000653 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000665- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
666 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
667
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000668- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
669 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
670
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000671- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
672 be released.
673

675 and atof().
676
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000677- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
678 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
679 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000680
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000681- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
682
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000683- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
684 now ints rather than longs.
685
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000686- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
687 started after line 256.
688
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000689- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
690 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
691 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
692 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
693 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
694 an extension.

Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +0000705 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
706 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

711
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000712- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
713 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
714 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
715
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000716- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

741
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000742- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
743 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
744 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
745
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000746- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
747 statement (bug #1509132).
748
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000749- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

752 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
753
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000754- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
755 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
756 now.
757
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000758Extension Modules
759-----------------
760
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000761- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
762 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
763 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000764
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000765- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
766 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
767
768- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
769 on non-Windows platforms.
770
771- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
772 integer or long, without range checking.
773
774- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
775 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
776 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
777
778- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
779 with the --without-threads option.
780
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000781- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
782 access, again.
783

785 a KeyboardInterrupt.
786
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000787- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

796
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000797- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000798 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
799 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
800
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000801- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
802 with spaces in it.
803
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000804- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
805 of Tcl/Tk.
806
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000807- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

832Core and builtins
833-----------------
834
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000835- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
836 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
837 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
838
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000839- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
840 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
841
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000842- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
843
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000844- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000845 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000846
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000847- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
848 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
849 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
850 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
851 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
852
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000853- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
854 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
855
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000856- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
857 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
858 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
859 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
860 requested.
861
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000862- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
863 away like they were in Python 2.4.
864
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000865- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
866 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
867 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
868
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000869- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
870 Unicode 4.1.
871
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000872- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
873 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
874 fewer open calls on startup.
875
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000876- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
877 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
878 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
879 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
880 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
881
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000882- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
883 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
884 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
885 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
886
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000887- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
888
889- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
890 "base" parameter.
891
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000892- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
893 objects.
894
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000895- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
896 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
897 C library function.
898
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000899- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
900
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000901- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
902
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000903- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
904 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
905 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
906 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
907
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000908- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
909
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000910- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
911
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000912- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
913 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
914 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
915 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
916
917- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
918 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
919 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
920 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

953 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
954
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000955- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

977 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
978
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000979- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001018- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1019 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1020 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1021 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1022 of the matching pair.

1039 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001040
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001041- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1042 for lookup.
1043
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001044- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1045 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1046 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1047 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1048 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1126-----------------
1127
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001128- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1129 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1130
1131 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1132 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1133 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1135 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1136
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001137- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1138
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001139- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1140 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1141 multiple times.
1142
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001143- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1144 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1145 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1146
1147- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1148 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1149
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001150- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1151 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1152 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001153 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001154 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001155
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001156 def __hash__(self):
1157 return id(self) # WRONG
1158
1159 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1160 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001161 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001162 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1163 necessarily so.
1164
1165- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001166 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001167 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001168 #1454844)
1169
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001170- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1171 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1172 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1173 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1174 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001175

1181
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001182- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1183 fails with an error condition.
1184
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001185- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1187- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1188 the cachesize parameter.
1189
1190- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1191 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1192
1193- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1194 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001195
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001196- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1204 abusing errno.
1205
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001206- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

1208 or exception is ignored).
1209
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001210- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1211 caught inside exit handlers.
1212
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001213- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1214 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1215 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1216 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1217
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001218- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when

1289
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001290- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1291 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1292 the current Decimal context.
1293
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001294- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1295 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1296 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1297 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001323Core and builtins
1324-----------------
1325
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001326- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1327 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1328
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001329- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1330 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1331 end in .PYD.
1332
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001333- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1334 sys.stdout.encoding.
1335
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001336- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1337
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001338- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1339
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001340- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1341
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001342- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1343 5.4 and later versions.
1344
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001345- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1346 now gives a SyntaxError.
1347
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001348- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1349 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1350 (closes patch #1170323).
1351
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001352- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1353 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1354 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1355 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1356 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1357 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1358 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001359 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1360 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001361 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1362 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1363
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001364- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1365 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1366 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1367
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001368- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1369 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1370 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1371 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1372
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001373- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1374
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001375- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1376 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1377 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1378 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1379
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001380- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1381 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1382 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1383 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1384 absolute_import' is used.
1385
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001386- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1387 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1388 exceptions.
1389
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001390- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001391 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1392
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001393- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001394
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001395- Patch 1433928:
1396 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1397 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1398 KeyError.
1399
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001400- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1401 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1402 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001403 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001404 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1405 - The built-in file type.
1406 - The thread.LockType type.
1407 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1408 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1409 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001410
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001411- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1412 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1413
1414 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1415 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1416
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001417- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1418
1419- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1420 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1421 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1422 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1423 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001424
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001425- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1426 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1427 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1428
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001429- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1430 configure would break checking curses.h.
1431
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001432- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1433 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1434
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001435- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1436
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001437- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1438
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001439- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1440
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001441- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1442 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1443
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001444- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001446 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1447
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001448- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1449 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001450 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001451
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001452- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1453 now encodes backslash correctly.
1454
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001455- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1456
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001457- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001458 and long longs.
1459
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001460- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001461 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001462 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001463
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001464- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1465 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1466 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1467 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1468 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1469
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001470- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1489
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001490- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001491 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1492 was empty.

1517
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001518- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1519 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1520 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001527- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1528 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1529 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001530 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001531 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1532 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1533 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1534 realloc.

1541
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001542- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module

1550
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001551- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,

1559 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1560 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1561 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001566- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1567 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1568 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1569 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1570
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001571- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1572 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1573 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1574 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1575 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1576
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001577- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001843 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001844 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001845 module will not be built.

1870
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001871- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1872 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1873 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1874 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1875 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1876 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1877 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2151
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002152- Enhancements to the csv module:
2153
2154 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002155 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002156 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002157 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2158 reporting.
2159 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2160 dictates.
2161 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002162 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002163 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002164 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2165 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002166 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2167 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002168 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002169 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2170 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2171 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2172 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2173 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2174 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2175 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2176 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2177 without first creating a dialect class.
2178 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2179 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2180 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002181 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002182 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2183 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002184 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2185 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2186 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2187 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002188 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2189 This has been fixed.
2190
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002191- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2192 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2193 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2194 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2195
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002196- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2197
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002198- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2199 (Bug #951915).
2200
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002201- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2202 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2203 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002204 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002205
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002206- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2207
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002208- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2209 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2210
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002211- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2212
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002213- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2218
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002219- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2220
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002221- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2222 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2223 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2224
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002225- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002226 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002227
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002228- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2229 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2230 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2231
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002232- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2233 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2234 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002235
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002236- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002238
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002239- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2240 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2241
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002242- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2243 correctly.
2244
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002245- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2246 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2247 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2248 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2249 between two lines.
2250
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002251- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2252 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2253 handlers.
2254
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002255- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002256 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2257 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002258
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002259- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2260 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2269
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002270- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2271 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002272 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2273 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2274 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002301- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2302 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2303 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002304 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002306- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2307 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2308 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2309
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002310- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2311
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002312- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2313 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2314
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002315- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2316 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2317 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2318 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2319 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2320 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2321 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2322 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2323
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002324- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2325 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2326 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2327 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002329C API
2330-----
2331
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002332- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2333 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2334 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2335 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2336 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2337 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2338 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2339 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2340 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2341 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2342
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002343- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2344

2346
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002347- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2348 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2349 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2350 mappings.
