16 fail.
17
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000018- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always
19 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /
20 unreachable. Original patch by Neil Schemenauer.

25 Original patch by Neal Norwitz.
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcad9b5992008-12-10 23:22:49 +000027- Issue #4597: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a

31 exceptions.
32
Mark Dickinson826f3fe2008-12-05 21:55:28 +000033- Issue #4445: Replace "sizeof(PyStringObject)" with
34 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
35 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
36 (on average) per string allocation.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000038- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
39 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
40 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
41
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000042- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__

46 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
47
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000048- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000049 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
50 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
51 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
52
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000053- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
54 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
55
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000056- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.

66 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
67
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000068- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
69 __future__ import didn't work.
70
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000071- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000072 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000073
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000074- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
75 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
76 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
77
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000078- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
79 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
80 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
81 it correctly refers to the initial element.
82
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000083- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
84 which there are buffer exports.

96 and gets split on a chunk boundary.
97
Nick Coghlana2053472008-12-14 10:54:50 +000098- Issue #4223: inspect.getsource() will now correctly display source code

100 loader). Original patch by Alexander Belopolsky.
101
102- Issue #4201: pdb can now access and display source code loaded via
103 zipimport (or any other conformant PEP 302 loader). Original patch by
104 Alexander Belopolsky.
105
106- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
107 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
108 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
109 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
110 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
111 Alexander Belopolsky.
112
113- Issues #4082 and #4512: Add runpy support to zipimport in a manner that

311 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent

313 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display

320 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
321 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
322 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
323
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000324- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000333- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000334 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
335 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
336 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
337 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
338 type object.

476
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000477*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000478
479Core and Builtins
480-----------------
481
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000482- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
483 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
484 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
485 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
486 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
487 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
488 default.
489
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000490- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
491 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
492
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000493- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
494 value again.
495
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000496- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
497 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
498 and introducing s*.
499
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000500- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
501 object was stored in the freelist.
502
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000503- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
504 ValueError consistently across platforms.
505
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000506- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
507 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
508 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
509
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000510- Apply security patches from Apple.
511
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000512- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
513 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
514
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000515- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
516 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
517
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000518- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
519 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
520 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
521
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000522- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
523 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
524 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
525 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
526 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
527 failed have been fixed.
528
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000529Library
530-------
531
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000532- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
533
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000534- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
535 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
536
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000537- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
538 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
539 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
540
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000541- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
542 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
543 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
544 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
545 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
546 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
547
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000548- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
549 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
550
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000551- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
552
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000553- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
554
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000555- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
556
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000557- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
558 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
559
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000560- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
561 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
562
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000563- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
564 in a redirect.
565
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000566- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000567 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000568
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000569- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
570 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
571
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000572- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
573 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
574 regular expression.
575
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000576- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
577 thread-safe.
578
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000579- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
580 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
581 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
582
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000583- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
584
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000585- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
586 menu entries were not deleted.
587
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000588- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
589 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
590
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000591- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
592 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
593
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000594- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
595 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
596 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
597
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000598- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
599 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
600 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
601
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000602- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
603 the reload() built-in has been removed.

Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000613- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
614 raised an AttributeError.

675
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000676- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
677 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
678 an integer using operator.index().
679
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000680- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
681 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
682
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000683- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
684 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
685
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000686- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
687 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
688 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
689
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000690- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
691 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
692 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
693 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
694 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
695 level.
696
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000697- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
698 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
699 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
700 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
701 all imports from that module to fail.
702
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000703- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
704 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
705 new-style classes.

709 another file in sys.stdout.
710
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000711- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

713 another thread's dictionary.
714
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000715- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
716 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
717 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
718 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
719 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
720 10, -1).
721
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000722- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000762- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
763 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000764 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000765 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001236- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1237 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1238 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1239 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1240 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1241 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1242 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1243 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001285- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001286 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls

1304-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001305
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001306- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1307 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1308 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1309 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1310 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1311 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1312 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1313 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1314 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1315 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1316 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1317 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1318 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1319 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1320 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1321 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1322 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1323 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1324 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1325 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1326
1327 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1328 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1329 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1330 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1331 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1332 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1333 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1334 access to the underlying socket used.
1335
1336 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1337 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1338 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001339
1340 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001341 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001342 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1343 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1344
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001345 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1346 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1624
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001625- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1626 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1627 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1628 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged

1630 module is:
1631 from future_builtins import hex, oct

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001633- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1634 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1635 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1636 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1637 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1638 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1639
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001640- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
