8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000015- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
16 ValueError consistently across platforms.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000018- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
19 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
20 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
21
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000022- Apply security patches from Apple.
23
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000024- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
25 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
26
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000027- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
28 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
29
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000030- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
31 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
32 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
33
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000034- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
35 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
36 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
37 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
38 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
39 failed have been fixed.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000041Library
42-------
43
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000044- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
45 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
46 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
47
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000048- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
49 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
50 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
51
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000052- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
53 the reload() built-in has been removed.
54
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000055- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
56 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
57 ConfigParser, cookielib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp, fileinput, inspect,
58 logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter,
Brett Cannon3f92bc62008-08-08 04:27:28 +000059 SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket, subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter,
Brett Cannon03446c42008-08-08 04:19:32 +000060 test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse,
61 wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000062
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000063- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
64 raised an AttributeError.
65
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000066- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +000067 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
68 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000069
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000070- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
71 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
72
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000073- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
74
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000075- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
76 on a closed shelf.
77
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000078- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000080- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
81
82- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
83 invalid arguments.
84
85- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
86 with None arguments.
87
88- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
89 configuration files.
90
91- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
92
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000093- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
94 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
95 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
96
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +000097- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
98 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
99 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
100
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000101Build
102-----
103
104- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
105
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000106Documentation
107-------------
108
109- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
110 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
111 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
112 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.
113
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000114

117
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000118*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
119
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000120Core and Builtins
121-----------------
122
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000123- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
124 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
125 an integer using operator.index().
126
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000127- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
128 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
129
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000130- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
131 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
132
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000133- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
134 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
135 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
136
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000137- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
138 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
139 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
140 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
141 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
142 level.
143
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000144- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
145 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
146 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
147 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
148 all imports from that module to fail.
149
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000150- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
151 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
152 new-style classes.
153
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000154- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
155 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
156 another file in sys.stdout.
157
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000158- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
159 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
160 another thread's dictionary.
161
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000162- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
163 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
164 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
165 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
166 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
167 10, -1).
168
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000169- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
170 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
171 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000172
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000173- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
174 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
175 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000176
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000177Library
178-------

181
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000182- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000205- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
206 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000207 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000208 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
209 merged into trunk.

217- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
218 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000219 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000224- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
225 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
226
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000227- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
228 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000234 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
235 Prevents a deadlock.
236
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000237- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
238 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
239 default https port (443).
240
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000241- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
242 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
243 if the new process uses the threading module.
244
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000245Tests

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000676- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
677 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
678 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
679 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
680 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
681 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
682 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
683 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

744-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000745
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000746- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
747 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
748 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
749 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
750 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
751 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
752 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
753 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
754 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
755 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
756 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
757 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
758 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
759 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
760 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
761 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
762 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
763 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
764 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
765 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
766
767 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
768 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
769 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
770 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
771 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
772 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
773 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
774 access to the underlying socket used.
775
776 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
777 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
778 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000779
780 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000781 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000782 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
783 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
784
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000785 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
786 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000840- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000841 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

1064
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001065- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1066 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1067 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1068 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1069 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1070 module is:
1071 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1072
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001073- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1074 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1075 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1076 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1077 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1078 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1079
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001080- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1081 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1082 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1083 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1084 PyObject_Format().
1085
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001086- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1087 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1088 state.

1098 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1099 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001100
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001101- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1102 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1103 to a bound method.

1116 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1117 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001118
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001119- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001131- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1132 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1133 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001134
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001135- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1136 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
