45 keyword arguments any more (previously they accepted them, but didn't
46 use them).

285Core and builtins
286-----------------
287
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000288- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000289 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
290 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000291
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000292 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
293 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
294 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
295 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
296 exception, logged, etc.
297
298 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
299 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000300
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000301- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

304 with new-style classes.
305
306- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
307 classic classes.
308
309- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
310 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
311 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
312 to effectively use __index__.

Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000325- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event

328 will be regenerated.
329
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000330- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored

342
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000343- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

449-----------------
450
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000451- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000452 returned a long (see PEP 353).
453
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000454- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
455
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000456- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
457 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
458 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
459
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000460- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
461 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
462
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000463- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
464 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
465 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
466 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
467
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000468- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
469 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
470 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
471 the code to make that compiler happy again.
472
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000473- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

487
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000488- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000489 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000490 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000492- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000493 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000494 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

504 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
505
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000506- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

511
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000512- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
513 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
514
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000515- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000516 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000517 #1513611, and probably others.
518

520 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
521
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000522- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
523 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
524 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
525 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
526 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
527
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000528- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

545
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000546- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
547
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000548- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
549 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
550 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
551 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
552 tuple pre-2.4.
553
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000554- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
555
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000556- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
557 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
558 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
559 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
560 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
561 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
562 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
563 charset and language parts).
564
565 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
566 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
567
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000568- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
569
570- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
571 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
572
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000573- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
574 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
575 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
576 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000589- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000603 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
604
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000605- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
606 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000607
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000608- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
609 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
610
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000611- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
612 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
613 sleepycat API allows.
614
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000615- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
616 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
617
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000618Tests
619-----
620
621- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
622 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
623 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
624
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000625- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
626 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
627 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

635---
636
637- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
638 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
639
640- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
641 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000642 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

653
Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000654- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
655 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
656
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000657- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
658 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
659
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000660- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
661 be released.
662
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000663- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
664 and atof().
665
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000666- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
667 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
668 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000669
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000670- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
671
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000672- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
673 now ints rather than longs.
674
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000675- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
676 started after line 256.
677
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000678- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
679 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
680 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
681 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
682 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
683 an extension.

692
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000693- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +0000694 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
695 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

700
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000701- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
702 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
703 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
704
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000705- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

721 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
722
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +0000723- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted

Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +0000729- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
730
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000731- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
732 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
733 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
734
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000735- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
736 statement (bug #1509132).
737
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000738- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000740- A bug was fixed in logging.config.fileConfig() which caused a crash on
741 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
742
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000743- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
744 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
745 now.
746
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000747Extension Modules
748-----------------
749
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000750- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
751 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
752 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000753
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000754- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
755 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
756
757- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
758 on non-Windows platforms.
759
760- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
761 integer or long, without range checking.
762
763- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
764 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
765 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
766
767- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
768 with the --without-threads option.
769
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000770- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
771 access, again.
772
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000773- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with
774 a KeyboardInterrupt.
775
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000776- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

785
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000786- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000787 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
788 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
789
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000790- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
791 with spaces in it.
792
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000793- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
794 of Tcl/Tk.
795
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000796- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

821Core and builtins
822-----------------
823
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000824- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
825 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
826 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
827
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000828- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
829 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
830
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000831- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
832
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000833- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000834 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000835
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000836- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
837 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
838 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
839 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
840 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
841
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000842- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
843 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
844
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000845- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
846 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
847 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
848 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
849 requested.
850
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000851- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
852 away like they were in Python 2.4.
853
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000854- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
855 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
856 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
857
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000858- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
859 Unicode 4.1.
860
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000861- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
862 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
863 fewer open calls on startup.
864
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000865- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
866 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
867 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
868 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
869 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
870
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000871- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
872 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
873 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
874 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
875
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000876- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
877
878- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
879 "base" parameter.
880
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000881- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
882 objects.
883
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000884- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
885 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
886 C library function.
887
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000888- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
889
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000890- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
891
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000892- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
893 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
894 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
895 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
896
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000897- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
898
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000899- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
900
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000901- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
902 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
903 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
904 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
905
906- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
907 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances

909 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1031 for lookup.
1032
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001033- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1034 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1035 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1036 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1037 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1115-----------------
1116
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001117- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1118 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1119
1120 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1121 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1122 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1124 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1125
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001126- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1127
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001128- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1129 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1130 multiple times.
1131
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001132- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1133 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1134 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1135
1136- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1137 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1138
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001139- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1140 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1141 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001142 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001143 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001144
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001145 def __hash__(self):
1146 return id(self) # WRONG
1147
1148 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1149 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001150 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001151 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1152 necessarily so.
1153
1154- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001155 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001156 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001157 #1454844)
1158
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001159- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1160 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1161 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1162 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1163 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001164
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001165Extension Modules

1169 is a macro.
1170
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001171- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1172 fails with an error condition.
1173
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001174- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1175
1176- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1177 the cachesize parameter.
1178
1179- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1180 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1181
1182- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1183 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001184
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001185- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1186 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +00001191- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
1192 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1193 abusing errno.
1194
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001195- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1196 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1197 or exception is ignored).
1198
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001199- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1200 caught inside exit handlers.
1201
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001202- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1203 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1204 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1205 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1206
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001207- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1208 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1209
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001210- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1211 .zip or .egg files.
1212
1213- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1214 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1215 in the filesystem or zip files.
1216
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001217- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1218 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory

1278
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001279- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1280 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1281 the current Decimal context.
1282
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001283- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1284 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1285 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1286 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1313-----------------
1314
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001315- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1316 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1317
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001318- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1319 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1320 end in .PYD.
1321
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001322- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1323 sys.stdout.encoding.
1324
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001325- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1326
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001327- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1328
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001329- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1330
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001331- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1332 5.4 and later versions.
1333
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001334- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1335 now gives a SyntaxError.
1336
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001337- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1338 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1339 (closes patch #1170323).
1340
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001341- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1342 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1343 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1344 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1345 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1346 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1347 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001348 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1349 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001350 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1351 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1352
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001353- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1354 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1355 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1356
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001357- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1358 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1359 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1360 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1361
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001362- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1363
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001364- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1365 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1366 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1367 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1368
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001369- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1370 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1371 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1372 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1373 absolute_import' is used.
1374
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001375- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1376 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1377 exceptions.
1378
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001379- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001380 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1381
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001382- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001383
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001384- Patch 1433928:
1385 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1386 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1387 KeyError.
1388
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001389- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1390 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1391 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001392 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001393 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1394 - The built-in file type.
1395 - The thread.LockType type.
1396 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1397 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1398 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001399
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001400- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1401 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1402
1403 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1404 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1405
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001406- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1407
1408- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1409 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1410 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1411 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1412 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001413
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001414- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1415 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1416 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1417
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001418- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1419 configure would break checking curses.h.
1420
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001421- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1422 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1423
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001424- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1425
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001426- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1427
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001428- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1429
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001430- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1431 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1432
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001433- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001435 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1436
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001437- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1438 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001439 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001440
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001441- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1442 now encodes backslash correctly.
1443
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001444- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1445
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001446- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001447 and long longs.
1448
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001449- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001450 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001451 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001452
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001453- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1454 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1455 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1456 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1457 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1458
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001459- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1478
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001479- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001480 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1481 was empty.
1482
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001483- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be

Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001500 (fixes bug #1119418).
1501
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001502- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1503
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001504- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1505 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1506
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001507- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1508 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1509 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1510
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001511- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1512

1514 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1515
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001516- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1517 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1518 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001519 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001520 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1521 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1522 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1523 realloc.
1524
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001525- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1527
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001528- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1529 like their int counterparts.
1530
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001531- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1532 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1533 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1534 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1535 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1536
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001537- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1538 serializing floats.
1539
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001540- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1541 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1542 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1543
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001544- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1545 278.
1546
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001547- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1548 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1549 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1550 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001551 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001552 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001553 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001554
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001555- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1556 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1557 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1558 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1559
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001560- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1561 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1562 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1563 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1564 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1565
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001566- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1567 disabled caused a crash.
1568
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001569- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1570 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1571
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001572- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1576
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001577- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001578 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1579 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1580 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001581

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001595- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001609- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1610 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1611 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1612
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001613- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1614 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1615 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1616
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001617- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1618 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1619 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1620 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1621 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001832 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001833 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001834 module will not be built.

1861 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1862 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1863 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1864 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1865 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1866 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2140
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002141- Enhancements to the csv module:
2142
2143 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002144 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002145 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002146 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2147 reporting.
2148 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2149 dictates.
2150 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002151 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002152 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002153 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2154 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002155 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2156 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002157 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002158 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2159 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2160 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2161 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2162 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2163 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2164 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2165 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2166 without first creating a dialect class.
2167 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2168 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2169 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002170 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002171 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2172 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002173 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2174 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2175 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2176 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002177 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2178 This has been fixed.
2179
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002180- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2181 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2182 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2183 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2184
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002185- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2186

2188 (Bug #951915).
2189
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002190- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2191 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2192 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002193 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002194
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002195- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2196
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002197- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2198 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2199
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002200- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2209
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002210- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2211 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2212 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2213
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002214- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002215 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002216
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002217- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2218 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2219 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2220
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002221- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2222 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2223 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002224
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002225- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002227
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002228- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2229 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``

2232 correctly.
2233
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002234- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2235 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2236 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2237 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2238 between two lines.
2239
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002240- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2241 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2242 handlers.
2243
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002244- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002245 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2246 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002279- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2280 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
2281

2285 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2286
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002287- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2288 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2289
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002290- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2291 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2292 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002293 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002295- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2296 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2297 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2298
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002299- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2300
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002301- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2302 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2303
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002304- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2305 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2306 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2307 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2308 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2309 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2310 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2311 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2312
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002313- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2314 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2315 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2316 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002318C API
2319-----
2320
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002321- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2322 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2323 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2324 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2325 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2326 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2327 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2328 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2329 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2330 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2331
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002332- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2333

2335
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002336- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2337 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2338 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2339 mappings.
