396
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000397- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
398 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
399 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
400 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
401 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
402 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
403 64bit values.
404
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000405- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

410 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000423 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000567
568Core and Builtins
569-----------------
570
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000571- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
572 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
573 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
574 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
575 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
576 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
577 default.
578
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000579- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
580 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
581
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000582- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
583 value again.
584
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000585- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
586 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
587 and introducing s*.
588
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000589- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
590 object was stored in the freelist.
591
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000592- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
593 ValueError consistently across platforms.
594
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000595- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
596 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
597 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
598
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000599- Apply security patches from Apple.
600
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000601- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
602 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
603
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000604- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
605 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
606
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000607- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
608 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
609 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
610
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000611- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
612 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
613 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
614 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
615 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
616 failed have been fixed.

620
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000621- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
622
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000623- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
624 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
625
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000626- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
627 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
628 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
629
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000630- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
631 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
632 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
633 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
634 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
635 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
636
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000637- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000762Core and Builtins
763-----------------
764
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000765- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
766 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
767 an integer using operator.index().
768
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000769- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
770 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
771
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000772- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
773 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
774
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000775- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
776 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
777 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
778
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000779- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
780 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
781 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
782 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
783 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
784 level.
785
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000786- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
787 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
788 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
789 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
790 all imports from that module to fail.
791
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000792- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
793 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
794 new-style classes.
795
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000796- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
797 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
798 another file in sys.stdout.
799
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000800- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
801 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
802 another thread's dictionary.
803
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000804- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
805 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
806 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
807 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
808 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
809 10, -1).
810
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000811- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
812 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
813 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000814
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000815- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

824 error when they failed.
825
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000826- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000851- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
852 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000853 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000854 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
855 merged into trunk.

872
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000873- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001325- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1326 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1327 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1328 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001395- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1396 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1397 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1398 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1399 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1400 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1401 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1402 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1403 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1404 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1405 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1406 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1407 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1408 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1409 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1410 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1411 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1412 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1413 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1414 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1415
1416 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1417 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1418 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1419 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1420 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1421 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1422 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1423 access to the underlying socket used.
1424
1425 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1426 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1427 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001428
1429 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001430 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1433
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001434 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1713
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001714- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1715 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1716 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1717 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1718 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1719 module is:
1720 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1721
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001722- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1723 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1724 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1725 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1726 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1727 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1728
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001729- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1730 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1731 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1732 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1733 PyObject_Format().
1734
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001735- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1736 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1737 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001738
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001739- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001740 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
