299 an extension. This was added for compatibility with Apple's build
300 of Python.
301
302- The bundled OSX-specific copy of libbffi is now in sync with the version
303 shipped with PyObjC 2.0 and includes support for x86_64 and ppc64 platforms.

313
Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +0000314- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
315
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000316- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
317 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000318 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000319
320 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
321
322 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
323
324 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
325
326 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
327
328 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
329
330 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

340- The PyString functions have been renamed to PyBytes. A batch of
341 defines were added so that the linker still sees the original
342 PyString names.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000380- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
381 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
382 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
383 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
384 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
385 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
386 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
387 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000429- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +0000430 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls

Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000447Tests
448-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000449
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000450- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
451 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
452 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
453 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
454 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
455 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
456 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
457 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
458 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
459 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
460 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
461 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
462 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
463 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
464 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
465 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
466 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
467 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
468 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
469 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
470
471 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
472 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
473 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
474 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
475 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
476 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
477 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
478 access to the underlying socket used.
479
480 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
481 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
482 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000483
484 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000485 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000486 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
487 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
488
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000489 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
490 suite to run in parallel without issue.

543
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000544- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000545 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

768
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000769- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
770 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

772 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
773 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
774 module is:
775 from future_builtins import hex, oct
776
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000777- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
778 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
779 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
780 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
781 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
782 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
783
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000784- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

803 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000804
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000805- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
