Anthony Baxterb4096662006-08-16 03:42:26 +0000272*Release date: 17-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000273
274Core and builtins
275-----------------
276
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +0000277- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.
278
279- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
280
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000281- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000282 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
283 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000284
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000285 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
286 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
287 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
288 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
289 exception, logged, etc.
290
291 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
292 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000293
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000294- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

297 with new-style classes.
298
299- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
300 classic classes.
301
302- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
303 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
304 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
305 to effectively use __index__.
306
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000307- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
308 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
309
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000310- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000312- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
313 sys.stdin is closed.
314
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000315- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
316 the Python dll again.
317
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000318- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
319 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
320 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
321 will be regenerated.
322
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000323- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
324 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie

443Core and builtins
444-----------------
445
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000446- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000447 returned a long (see PEP 353).
448
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000449- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
450
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000451- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
452 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
453 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
454
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000455- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
456 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
457
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000458- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
459 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
460 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
461 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
462
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000463- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
464 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
465 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
466 the code to make that compiler happy again.
467
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000468- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

479
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000480- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
481 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
482
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000483- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000484 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000485 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000487- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000488 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000489 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

499 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
500
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000501- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

506
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000507- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
508 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
509
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000510- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000511 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

513
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000514- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
515 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
516
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000517- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
518 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
519 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
520 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
521 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
522
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000523- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

533
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000534- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.

Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000536- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
537 value in the traceback module.
538
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000539- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
540
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000541- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
542
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000543- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
544 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
545 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
546 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
547 tuple pre-2.4.
548
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000549- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
550
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000551- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
552 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
553 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
554 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
555 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
556 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
557 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
558 charset and language parts).
559
560 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
561 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
562
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000563- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
564
565- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
566 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
567
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000568- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
569 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
570 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
571 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

583
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000584- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

594 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
595
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000596- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

651
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000652- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned

669
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000670- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope

672
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000673- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
674 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
675 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
676 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
677 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
678 an extension.

699
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000700- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

725
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000726- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
727 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
728 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
729
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000730- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000745- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
746 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
747 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000748
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000749- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
750 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
751
752- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
753 on non-Windows platforms.
754
755- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
756 integer or long, without range checking.
757
758- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
759 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
760 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
761
762- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
763 with the --without-threads option.
764
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000765- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

780
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000781- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000782 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
783 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
784
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000785- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000819- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
820 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
821 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
822
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000823- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
824 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
825
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000826- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
827
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000828- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).

Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000831- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
832 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
833 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
834 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
835 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
836
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000837- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
838 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
839
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000840- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
841 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
842 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
843 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
844 requested.
845
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000846- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
847 away like they were in Python 2.4.
848
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000849- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
850 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
851 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
852
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000853- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
854 Unicode 4.1.
855
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000856- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
857 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
858 fewer open calls on startup.
859
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000860- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
861 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
862 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
863 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
864 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
865
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000866- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
867 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
868 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
869 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
870
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000871- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
872
873- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
874 "base" parameter.
875
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000876- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
877 objects.
878
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000879- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
880 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
881 C library function.
882
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000883- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
884
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000885- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
886
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000887- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
888 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
889 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
890 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
891
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000892- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
893
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000894- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
895
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000896- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
897 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
898 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
899 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
900
901- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
902 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
903 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
904 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

912
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000913- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
914 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
915

920 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
921 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

942
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000943- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

958
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +0000959- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
960 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
961 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
962
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000963- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
964 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
965 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.

1000 double-byte encodings.
1001
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001002- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1003 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1004 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1005 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1006 of the matching pair.

1026 for lookup.
1027
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001028- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1029 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1030 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1031 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1032 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1053
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001054- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1110-----------------
1111
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001112- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1113 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1114
1115 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1116 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1117 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1118 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1119 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1120
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001121- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1122
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001123- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1124 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1125 multiple times.
1126
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001127- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1128 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1129 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1130
1131- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1132 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1133
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001134- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1135 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1136 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001137 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001138 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001139
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001140 def __hash__(self):
1141 return id(self) # WRONG
1142
1143 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1144 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001145 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001146 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1147 necessarily so.
1148
1149- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001150 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001151 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001152 #1454844)
1153
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001154- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1155 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1156 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1157 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1158 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001159
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001160Extension Modules

1165
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001166- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1167 fails with an error condition.
1168
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001169- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1171- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1172 the cachesize parameter.
1173
1174- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1175 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1176
1177- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1178 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001179
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001180- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1181 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1187 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1188 abusing errno.
1189
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001190- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1191 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1192 or exception is ignored).
1193
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001194- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1195 caught inside exit handlers.
1196
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001197- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1198 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1199 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1200 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1201
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001202- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1203 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1204
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001205- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1206 .zip or .egg files.
1207
1208- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1209 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1210 in the filesystem or zip files.
1211
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001212- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1213 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1214 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1215 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001216
Tim Petersc7605f22006-04-17 21:12:33 +00001217- The ``__del__`` method of class ``local`` in module ``_threading_local``
1218 returned before accomplishing any of its intended cleanup.
1219
Martin v. Löwisbd30f522006-04-17 17:08:37 +00001220- Patch #790710: Add breakpoint command lists in pdb.

1225
Anthony Baxtere29002c2006-04-12 12:07:31 +00001226- SimpleXMLRPCServer relied on the fcntl module, which is unavailable on
1227 Windows. Bug #1469163.
1228
Phillip J. Eby47032112006-04-11 01:07:43 +00001229- The warnings, linecache, inspect, traceback, site, and doctest modules

1273
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001274- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1275 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1276 the current Decimal context.
1277
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001278- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1279 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1280 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1281 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1308-----------------
1309
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001310- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1311 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1312
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001313- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1314 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1315 end in .PYD.
1316
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001317- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1318 sys.stdout.encoding.
1319
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001320- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1321
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001322- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1323
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001324- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1325
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001326- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1327 5.4 and later versions.
1328
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001329- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1330 now gives a SyntaxError.
1331
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001332- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1333 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1334 (closes patch #1170323).
1335
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001336- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1337 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1338 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1339 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1340 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1341 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1342 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001343 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1344 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001345 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1346 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1347
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001348- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1349 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1350 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1351
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001352- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1353 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1354 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1355 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1356
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001357- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1358
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001359- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1360 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1361 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1362 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1363
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001364- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1365 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1366 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1367 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1368 absolute_import' is used.
1369
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001370- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1371 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1372 exceptions.
1373
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001374- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001375 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1376
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001377- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001378
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001379- Patch 1433928:
1380 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1381 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1382 KeyError.
1383
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001384- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1385 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1386 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001387 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001388 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1389 - The built-in file type.
1390 - The thread.LockType type.
1391 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1392 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1393 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001394
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001395- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1396 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1397
1398 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1399 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1400
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001401- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1402
1403- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1404 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1405 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1406 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1407 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001408
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001409- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1410 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1411 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1412
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001413- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1414 configure would break checking curses.h.
1415
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001416- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1417 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1418
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001419- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1420
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001421- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1422
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001423- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1424
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001425- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1426 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1427
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001428- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001430 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1431
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001432- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1433 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001434 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

1440
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001441- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001442 and long longs.
1443
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001444- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001445 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001446 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001447
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001448- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1449 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1450 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1451 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1452 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1453
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001454- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001455

1473
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001474- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001475 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1476 was empty.
1477
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001478- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1479 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1480
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001481- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001502- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1503 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1504 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1505
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001506- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1507
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001508- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1509 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1510
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001511- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1512 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1513 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001514 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001515 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1516 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1517 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1518 realloc.
1519
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001520- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1521 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1522
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001523- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1524 like their int counterparts.
1525
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001526- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1527 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1528 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1529 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1530 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1531
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001532- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1533 serializing floats.
1534
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001535- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1536 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1537 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1538
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001539- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1540 278.
1541
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001542- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1543 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1544 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1545 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001546 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001547 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001548 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001549
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001550- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1551 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1552 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1553 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1554
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001555- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1556 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1557 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1558 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1559 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1560
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001561- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1562 disabled caused a crash.
1563
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001564- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1565 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1566
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001567- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001568 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1571
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001572- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001573 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1574 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1575 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001576

1589
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001590- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001591 an ferror() call.
1592
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001593- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001604- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1605 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1606 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1607
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001608- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1609 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1610 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1611
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001612- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1613 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1614 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1615 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1616 the same thread id).

1856 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1857 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1858 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1859 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1860 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

2075 instead of raising a TypeError when interacting with other types. This
2076 allows other classes to implement __radd__ style methods and have them
2077 work as expected.
2078
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002079- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2135
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002136- Enhancements to the csv module:
2137
2138 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002139 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002140 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002141 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2142 reporting.
2143 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2144 dictates.
2145 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002146 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002147 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002148 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2149 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002150 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2151 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002152 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002153 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2154 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2155 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2156 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2157 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2158 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2159 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2160 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2161 without first creating a dialect class.
2162 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2163 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2164 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002165 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002166 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2167 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002168 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2169 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2170 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2171 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002172 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2173 This has been fixed.
2174
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002175- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2176 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2177 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2178 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2179
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002180- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2181

2183 (Bug #951915).
2184
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002185- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2186 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2187 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002188 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002189
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002190- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2191
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002192- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2193 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2194
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002195- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2196
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002197- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2202
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002203- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2204
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002205- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2206 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2207 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2208
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002209- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002210 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002211
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002212- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2213 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2214 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2215
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002216- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2217 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2218 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002219
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002220- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002222
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002223- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2224 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2225

2227 correctly.
2228
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002229- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2230 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2231 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2232 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2233 between two lines.
2234
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002235- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2236 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2237 handlers.
2238
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002239- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002240 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2241 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002242
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002243- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2244 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2253
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002254- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2255 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002256 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2257 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2258 special classes that use unicode.
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002259

Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002294- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2295
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002296- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2297 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2298
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002299- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2300 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2301 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2302 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2303 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2304 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2305 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2306 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2307
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002308- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2309 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2310 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2311 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2314-----
2315
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002316- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2317 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2318 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2319 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2320 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2321 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2322 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2323 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2324 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2325 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2326
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002327- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002331- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2332 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2333 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2334 mappings.
