16 fail.
17
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000018- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always

34 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
35 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
36 (on average) per string allocation.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000038- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000048- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000049 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
50 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
51 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
52
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000053- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
54 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
55

66 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
67
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000068- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
69 __future__ import didn't work.
70
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000071- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000072 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000073
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000074- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
75 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
76 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
77

79 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
80 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
81 it correctly refers to the initial element.
82
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000083- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
84 which there are buffer exports.

105 zipimport (or any other conformant PEP 302 loader). Original patch by
106 Alexander Belopolsky.
107
108- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
109 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
110 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
111 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
112 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by

Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000311- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
312
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000313- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
314 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
315 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
316 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
317 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
318 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display

323
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000324- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
325 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
326 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
327 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
328
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000329- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000336 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
337
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000338- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000339 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
340 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
341 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
342 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
343 type object.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000483
484Core and Builtins
485-----------------
486
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000487- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
488 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
489 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
490 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
491 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
492 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
493 default.
494
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000495- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
496 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
497
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000498- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
499 value again.
500
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000501- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
502 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
503 and introducing s*.
504
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000505- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
506 object was stored in the freelist.
507
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000508- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
509 ValueError consistently across platforms.
510
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000511- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
512 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
513 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
514
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000515- Apply security patches from Apple.
516
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000517- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
518 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
519
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000520- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
521 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
522
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000523- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
524 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
525 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
526
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000527- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
528 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
529 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
530 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
531 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
532 failed have been fixed.
533
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000534Library
535-------
536
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000537- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
538
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000539- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
540 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
541
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000542- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
543 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
544 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
545
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000546- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
547 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
548 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
549 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
550 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
551 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
552
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000553- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
554 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
555
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000556- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
557
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000558- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
559
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000560- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
561
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000562- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
563 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
564
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000565- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
566 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
567
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000568- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
569 in a redirect.
570
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000571- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000572 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000573
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000574- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
575 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
576
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000577- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
578 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
579 regular expression.
580
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000581- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
582 thread-safe.
583
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000584- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
585 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
586 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
587
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000588- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
589
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000590- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
591 menu entries were not deleted.
592
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000593- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
594 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
595
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000596- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
597 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
598
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000599- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
600 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
601 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
602
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000603- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
604 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
605 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
606
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000607- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
608 the reload() built-in has been removed.

680
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000681- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
682 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
683 an integer using operator.index().
684
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000685- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
686 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
687
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000688- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
689 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
690
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000691- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
692 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
693 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
694
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000695- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
696 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
697 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
698 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
699 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
700 level.
701
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000702- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
703 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
704 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
705 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
706 all imports from that module to fail.
707
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000708- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
709 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
710 new-style classes.
711
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000712- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

714 another file in sys.stdout.
715
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000716- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

718 another thread's dictionary.
719
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000720- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
721 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
722 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
723 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
724 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
725 10, -1).
726
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000727- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
728 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
729 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000767- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
768 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000769 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000770 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001241- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1242 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1243 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1244 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1245 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1246 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1247 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1248 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001290- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001291 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001310
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001311- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1312 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1313 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1314 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1315 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1316 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1317 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1318 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1319 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1320 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1321 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1322 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1323 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1324 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1325 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1326 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1327 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1328 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1329 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1330 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1331
1332 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1333 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1334 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1335 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1336 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1337 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1338 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1339 access to the underlying socket used.
1340
1341 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1342 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1343 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001344
1345 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001346 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001347 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1348 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1349
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001350 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1351 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1640 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1641 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1642 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1643 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
