63 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
64
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000065- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
66 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
67 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000068 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
69 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000070 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
71 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
72 DeprecationWarning.

95
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000096- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
97 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
98 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000099

114 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
115 build documentation for more information.
116
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000117- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
118 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
119 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
120 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
121
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000122- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
123 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
124 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
125
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000126- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
127 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
128 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
129
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000130Tests
131-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000132- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
133 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
134 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
135 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
136 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
137 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
138 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
139 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
140 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
141 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
142 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
143 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
144 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
145 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
146 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
147 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
148 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
149 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
150
151 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
152 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
153 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
154 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
155 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
156 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
157 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
158
159 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
160 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
161
162 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
163 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
164 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
165 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
166
167 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
168 run in parallel without issue.

176 gcc is used as compiler.
177

186 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
187 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
188
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000189- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k

426
427- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000428
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000429- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000430 issue 215555 for a discussion.
431
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000432- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
433 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
434 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
435 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
436 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
437 module is:
438 from future_builtins import hex, oct
439
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000440- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
441 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
442 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
443 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
444 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
445 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
446
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000447- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
448 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
449 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
450 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
451 PyObject_Format().
452

461 imaginary part.
462
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000463- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000464 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
465 OS earlier.
466

468 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
469
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000470- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
471 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
472
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000473- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
474 each.

494
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000495- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
496 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
497 generator.
498
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000499- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000500 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000501 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

2031-----
2032
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002033- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2034 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2035 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2036
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002037- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002038 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002039 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2040
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002041- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002042
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002043- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format and
2044 _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and PyLong_FromSsize_t
2045 public functions.
2046
2047- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2048
2049- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2050 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2051
2052- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2053 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2054 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2055 results with huge strings.
2056
2057- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2058 and Py_REFCNT.
2059
2060- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2061 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2062 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2063
2064- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2065
2066- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2067
2068- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.

2074- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2075 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2076
2077- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2078 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2079
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002080- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2081 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2082 some conditions.
2083
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002084- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002085 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.

2110
Brett Cannon5e263512007-05-20 23:17:38 +00002111- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5. This
2112 lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied solely on macfs
2113 and was a no-op under OS X.
