Georg Brandl6425a2f2008-12-28 11:54:53 +000015- Issue #4759: None is now allowed as the first argument of

19 fail.
20
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000021- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always

37 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
38 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
39 (on average) per string allocation.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000041- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000052 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
53 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
54 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
55
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000056- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

72 __future__ import didn't work.
73
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000074- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000075 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000076

82 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
83 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
84 it correctly refers to the initial element.

324Core and Builtins
325-----------------
326
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000327- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
328
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000329- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
330 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
331 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
332 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
333 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
334 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
335 64bit values.
336
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000337- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
338 error.
339
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000340- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
341 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
342 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
343 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
344
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000345- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
346 a unicode argument.
347
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000348- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
349
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000350- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000351 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000352 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
353
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000354- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000355 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
356 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
357 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
358 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
359 type object.
360
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000361- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
362
363- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
364
365- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
366
367- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
368
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000369- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
370 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
371
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000372- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
373 ``__delslice__``.
374
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000375- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
376 library targets in the Makefile.
377
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000378- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
379 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
380 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
381
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000382C-API

388-------
389
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000390- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
391 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
392

396
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000397- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
398 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
399 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
400
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000401- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

430 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
431 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
432 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
433
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000434- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

497
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000498*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000499
500Core and Builtins
501-----------------
502
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000503- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
504 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
505 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
506 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
507 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
508 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
509 default.
510
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000511- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
512 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
513
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000514- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
515 value again.
516
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000517- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
518 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
519 and introducing s*.
520
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000521- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
522 object was stored in the freelist.
523
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000524- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
525 ValueError consistently across platforms.
526
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000527- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
528 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
529 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
530
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000531- Apply security patches from Apple.
532
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000533- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
534 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
535
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000536- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
537 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
538
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000539- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
540 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
541 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
542
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000543- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
544 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
545 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
546 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
547 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
548 failed have been fixed.
549
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000550Library
551-------
552
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000553- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
554
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000555- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
556 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
557
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000558- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
559 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
560 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
561
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000562- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
563 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
564 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
565 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
566 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
567 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
568
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000569- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
570 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
571
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000572- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
573
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000574- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
575
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000576- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
577
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000578- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
579 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
580
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000581- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
582 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
583
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000584- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
585 in a redirect.
586
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000587- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000588 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000589
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000590- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
591 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
592
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000593- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
594 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
595 regular expression.
596
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000597- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
598 thread-safe.
599
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000600- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
601 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
602 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
603
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000604- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
605
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000606- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
607 menu entries were not deleted.
608
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000609- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
610 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
611
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000612- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
613 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
614
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000615- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
616 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
617 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
618
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000619- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
620 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
621 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
622
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000623- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000694Core and Builtins
695-----------------
696
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000697- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
698 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
699 an integer using operator.index().
700
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000701- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
702 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
703
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000704- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
705 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
706
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000707- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
708 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
709 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
710
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000711- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
712 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
713 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
714 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
715 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
716 level.
717
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000718- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
719 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
720 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
721 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
722 all imports from that module to fail.
723
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000724- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
725 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
726 new-style classes.
727
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000728- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
729 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
730 another file in sys.stdout.
731
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000732- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
733 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
734 another thread's dictionary.
735
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000736- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
737 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
738 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
739 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
740 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
741 10, -1).
742
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000743- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
744 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
745 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000746
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000747- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
748 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
749 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

756 error when they failed.
757
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000758- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000783- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
784 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000785 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000786 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
787 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000802- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the

804
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000805- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001257- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1258 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1259 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1260 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1262 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1263 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1325-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001326
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001327- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1328 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1329 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1330 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1331 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1332 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1333 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1334 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1335 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1336 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1337 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1338 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1339 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1340 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1341 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1342 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1343 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1344 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1345 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1346 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1347
1348 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1349 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1350 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1351 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1352 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1353 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1354 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1355 access to the underlying socket used.
1356
1357 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1358 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1359 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001360
1361 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001362 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001363 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1364 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1365
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001366 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1367 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001646- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1647 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001654- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1655 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1656 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1657 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1658 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1659 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1660
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001661- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001900- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1901 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1902 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1903 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1904 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001905 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1906 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001907
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001908- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an

1910 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1911 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1912 method.
