8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000013- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
14 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
15
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000016- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
17 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
18 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
19
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000020- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
21 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
22 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
23 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
24 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
25 level.
26
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000027- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
28 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
29 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
30 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
31 all imports from that module to fail.
32
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000033- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
34 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
35 new-style classes.
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000037- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
38 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
39 another file in sys.stdout.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000041- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
42 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
43 another thread's dictionary.
44
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000045- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
46 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
47 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
48 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
49 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
50 10, -1).
51
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000052- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000053 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000054 switch to the new compiler.
55
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000056- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
57 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
58 calls them via gc.collect().
59
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000060Library
61-------
62
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +000063- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
64 a valid dlerror() message.
65
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +000066- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
67 incomplete structure was created.
68
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +000069- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
70
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000071- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
72
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000073- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000074
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000075- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
76 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000077 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000078 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
79 merged into trunk.
80
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000081- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
82
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000083- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
84
85- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
86
87- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
88 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
89 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
90
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000091- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
92 when completed.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000094- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
95 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
96
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000097- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
98 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
99
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +0000100- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
101 interrupted by a signal.
102

108 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
109 default https port (443).

112-----
113
114- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
115 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
116 have been added to test_warnings.
117
118
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +0000119Build

147
Brett Cannondea1b562008-06-27 00:31:13 +0000148- Issue #3211: warnings.warn_explicit() did not guard against its 'registry'

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000543- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
544 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
545 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
546 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
547 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
548 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
549 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
550 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

597 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
598 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
599 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
600
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000601- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
602 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
603 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
604
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000605- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available,
606 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
607 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
608 data files.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000613- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
614 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
615 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
616 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
617 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
618 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
619 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
620 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
621 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
622 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
623 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
624 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
625 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
626 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
627 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
628 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
629 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
630 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
631 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
632 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
633
634 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
635 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
636 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
637 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
638 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
639 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
640 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
641 access to the underlying socket used.
642
643 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
644 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
645 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000646
647 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000648 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000649 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
650 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
651
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000652 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
653 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000925- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
926
927- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000928
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000929- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000930 issue 215555 for a discussion.
931
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000932- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
933 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
934 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
935 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
936 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
937 module is:
938 from future_builtins import hex, oct
939
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000940- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
941 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
942 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
943 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
944 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
945 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
946
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000947- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
948 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
949 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
950 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
951 PyObject_Format().
952
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000953- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
954 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
955 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000956
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000957- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

966 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000967
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000968- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
969 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
970 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000971

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001113- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
1114 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible
1115 from C code. Nor did object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str

2611

2613 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
2614 and the upper limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an
2615 #ifndef block.
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002616

2618 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2619 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.

2633 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2634 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2635 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002636
