40 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
41 possible.
42
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000043Library

74 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
75 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
76 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
77
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000078- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
79 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to

85
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000086Tests
87-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000088- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
89 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
90 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
91 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
92 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
93 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
94 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
95 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
96 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
97 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
98 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
99 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
100 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
101 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
102 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
103 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
104 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
105 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
106
107 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
108 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
109 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
110 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
111 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
112 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
113 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
114
115 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
116 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
117
118 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
119 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
120 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
121 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
122
123 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
124 run in parallel without issue.

127-----
128
Mark Dickinson65134662008-04-25 16:11:04 +0000129- Issue #1496032: On alpha, use -mieee when gcc is the compiler.
130
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000131- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
132 gcc is used as compiler.
133
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000134C API
135-----
136
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000137- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
138 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
139 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
140 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

370-----------------
371
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000372- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000373 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000374
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000375- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
376
377- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000378
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000379- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000380 issue 215555 for a discussion.
381
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000382- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
383 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
384 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
385 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
386 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
387 module is:
388 from future_builtins import hex, oct
389
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000390- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
391 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
392 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
393 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
394 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
395 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
396
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000397- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
398 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
399 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
400 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
401 PyObject_Format().
402
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000403- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
404 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
405
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000406- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000408 on a registered virtual subclass.
409
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000410- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
411 imaginary part.
412
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000413- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000414 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
415 OS earlier.
416

418 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
419
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000420- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
421 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
422
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000423- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
424 each.

444
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000445- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
446 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
447 generator.
448
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000449- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000450 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000451 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
452 "else" suite.

575 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
576 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
577 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
578 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

2000 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2001
2002- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2003 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2004 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2005 results with huge strings.
2006
2007- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2008 and Py_REFCNT.

2025 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2026
2027- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2028 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2029
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002030- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2031 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2032 some conditions.
2033
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002034- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002035 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
